yepyoukno··on Classicist Emily Wilson: 'Odysseus is a different kind of conman'
For sure!

Without actually reading the paywalls article, of context a classical enthusiast I would have to agree!

The subtle art of deception was historically considered a feminine trait, as opposed to the brute nature of masculinity.

Athena Minerva smiled upon Odysseus, bestowing upon him a manner of charm and wit unparalleled even in the world of his time.

His craft of deception and charm in the end did not need armies to conquer.

I don’t know where else the article might be going with this, though the story is a favorite!

If you missed it, an earlier post discussed choosing among the various translations of the Odyssey for whoever among you were curious…

yepyoukno··on Cognitive and affective effects of L-Theanine: review of 31 randomized trials
I personally have adverse reactions to L-Theanine. Not for everyone!
yepyoukno··on The revenge of the philosophy majors
Philosophy is a living process of integrating ideas. Classical materials are the whetstone upon which the mind is sharpened. Unlike history, where literal established accounts are ideal, in philosophy one is expected to view today (or the future) through the lens of contextual discourse.

While there is “no right answer” understanding what the issues are and how the discussion plays out is relevant.

yepyoukno··on Ask HN: What do you do with the user guide of the universe?
You’re wrong!

Lorentz field displacement is another example.

You merely need an extraordinary amount of potential, hence the true fusion and optimal gamma collection!

yepyoukno··on Ask HN: What do you do with the user guide of the universe?
What do you mean no physics claim?

Fusion, we are currently 100 years away from “true” fusion power. Notably, capturing the gamma potential is far beyond our means. In the sun the gamma release bounces around for approximately ONE MILLION YEARS, ricocheting through a wall of gas 50,000 Earth thick before emerging as the soft glow of sunlight we see. Notably, at the very core that plasmoidal gas is 13 x the density of lead, moving towards the density of water before it reaches the surface.

And then there is the acceleration of counterweights towards the speed of light. Acceleration of 1kg to 99% of the speed of light gives us 7kg of relativistic mass. So careful pulse width modulated acceleration of counterweights of a fraction of the base “craft” mass would make the craft fall up! You would need to manipulate intensive electromagnetic fields to do this safely.

yepyoukno··on Ask HN: What do you do with the user guide of the universe?
Easy,

- true controlled fusion, harvest the gamma potential right off the reactor

- master intense electromagnetism, useful for all sorts of things

- accelerate masses towards the speed of light, as ballast propulsion

- build a city sized craft that flies and hovers in the sky like bricks don’t.

yepyoukno··on Zuckerberg says AI agent development going slower than expected
Or some fuzzy yet inevitably reliable shit.

The modern trend is to think intelligence is generative “like compression” or “predicting next in sequence” rather than iteratively reducing uncertainty, like those fault tolerant humans.

yepyoukno··on How information theory saved my word game
Lossy compression down samples a preexisting pattern. It does not derive the pattern. How is deduction and lossy compression the same thing?
yepyoukno··on What if AGI is here, but it just actually sucks?
Then it isn’t AGI, unless you agree that most people’s thinking skills “just suck.” For which there is an argument. As long as we can try and try and try again, especially in context of pre-existing working examples, then sure GI and therefor AGI may just suck yet average out just fine!
yepyoukno··on Ask HN: noticed how HN performs sentiment-analysis on everything posted here?
There are certain persons who downvote at the slightest provocation or inclination.

It would be impossible to tell without running analysis queries as to who and what causes such behavior.

I should point out your comment is “frumpy” with a dash of “cringe”. Could it be that your comments are laced with a condescension which draws negative response?

yepyoukno··on How information theory saved my word game
> algorithmic information theory, arguing that general intelligence is mathematically equivalent to data compression and sequence prediction

Then let it be said “algorithmic intelligence” for true “general” intelligence is not constrained by sequence or brevity. There is indirection, substitution, and other variabilities to the chaotic circumstances of real world (“general”) problem solving. All forms of intelligence relate to the reduction of uncertainty. Compression sounds like “shortest path” and sequence sounds like constrained conditions, neither are “general.”

yepyoukno··on How information theory saved my word game
No, while you loose some details, there is only one direction of determination.

Compression is not intelligence!

yepyoukno··on How information theory saved my word game
Compression is not intelligence.

While intelligence and compression both may have similar goals (to optimize paths of information), intelligence negotiates probability (allowing multiple divergent outcomes) while compression requires an idempotent symbolic translation.

yepyoukno··on Reading Is the Ultimate Cognitive Enhancer
Yes. While encouraging the youngsters in my family I tell them “the mind is like a magical place which is bigger on the inside than on the outside.” And that “reading books makes the mind larger”. Though I don’t go much further on the philosophy, if I were to carry on with an adult I would point out that the introspection is a form of life experience. Throughout the rest of one’s life, every time someone remembers and relates to whatever was read, it counts internally as a developmental experience.
yepyoukno··on 'Humans behave better when they're being watched'
They sure do!

I know when babes are watching me I fix my posture and try not to do anything bafoonish.

That doesn’t mean meddlesome jerkarses profiling my behavior is okay though!

As we saw with that ultra safe and secure palantir law enforcement scandal, there is just as much a likelihood the watchers are your stalkers!

And now that Trump wants to broaden involuntary detentions on “psychological” grounds, who’s going to decide when it’s just CRAZY not to support the worlds greatest president?

yepyoukno··on Ask HN: If someone invested $100k now for your startup, how would you spend it?
As little as possible or necessary.

For the hard working entrepreneur in the middle of nowhere midlands it sounds like “wohoo!” Salaries, rent, equipment, and now … tokens? Will devour that quickly.

The investment won’t be worth anything if it doesn’t carry through to revenue.

So I would have to say “infrastructure.” The most essential things to get to wherever the plan is going. Maybe keep 20% in cash for unexpected emergencies.

$100k really isn’t a lot unless you’re one guy working from home.

Don’t spend it on anything you don’t need!

yepyoukno··on From Pentagons to Pentagrams
Great article on stellated forms! I almost missed it due to the subtle unintuitive title!
yepyoukno··on Ask HN: How do you do invoicing?
Nicely structured single page doc with letterhead, a projected project total (for whatever duration or goal), an itemized break down, iterative milestone completion dates/amounts and “please pay” the next incremental amount due.

Wham bam thank you ma’am.

Invoicing regularly and clearly is like printing your own money.

yepyoukno··on Coal Butter - Butter Made from Coal
> producing edible fats by oxidizing synthetic paraffin wax made from coal… edible fats were obtained … which were reacted with glycerol such as that synthesized from propylene. Margarine made from them was found to be nutritious and of agreeable taste, and it was incorporated into diets contributing as much as 700 calories per day. The process required at least 60 kilograms of coal per kilogram of synthetic butter.

Yummm

yepyoukno··on GPS spoofing teleported me to Peru, mid-flight
> I'm also very curious, do you have any technical mitigations for this to be able to use your GPS devices

The GPS jamming is probably to confuse the missiles or drones, not the people!

yepyoukno··on Astronomers Discover Third Galaxy Without Dark Matter
So true! Just to show how much so, here’s another hypothesis!

Time dilation! As time itself emerges from space/gravity, mass and distance could introduce a “time dilation” fudge that cosmologists attribute to “dark energy/matter”!

It may be our lack of understanding of time itself that changes factors of how we calculate the cosmological expansion/contraction and other mass stability estimates.

I too find it funny that we can wrap up our ignorance into a concept and call it dark*(whatever)!

yepyoukno··on Quantum mechanics theory may work without imaginary numbers, analysis suggests
I would like to point out that the Cartesian (x,y,z) account of “three dimensions” is imaginary and does not exist in reality. Only on paper does this make any sense.

In reality coordinates are polar relations among bodies (usually in reference to the largest body in common.)

Any system that relies upon imaginary coordinates to refute imaginary numbers is suspicious. And what is this <star> operator business anyhow (Unicode did not interpolate)?

yepyoukno··on Astronomers Discover Third Galaxy Without Dark Matter
You’re right.

One counter theory (oops, “hypothesis”) is that the “missing matter” is actually the stored gravitational energy of systems “weaving” among themselves (my wording.) kind of like how intense magnetic fields “braid”, in a galaxy scale all mass bodies are not sitting evenly dispersed on the orbital plane (by accretion,) rather they are perturbing each other in complex orbits as the disc churns, storing more gravitational potential than may be visibly accounted. Like a spring (compressing a spring actually increases mass.)

Galaxies without these complex orbital currents would correlate more consistent visible mass estimations.

yepyoukno··on Tell HN: Happy Father's Day
My dad taught me, when you borrow something always return it in better condition than you received it. I thought everyone did this sort of thing until I lived in the “real world” and found it more common to neglect! As I grew older I realized this should apply to everything, even the environment.
yepyoukno··on DOS Game "F-15 Strike Eagle II" reversing project needs DOS test pilots
Nice work!

I’m not sure you should beat yourself up too much for a Linix* port, emulators are so well supported and ubiquitous, if it works there (not everything does), call it a win!

I use Lutris (https://lutris.net/) for its ease of use.

I can see your a “low level mahn” and this may be more of a quest for you than playing a cool retro game.

Any which way, GREAT WORK!!!!

yepyoukno··on How animals communicate to work together across species boundaries
Like one of my favorites, this YouTube video showing a coyote and badger hunting together. The last few seconds shows the coyote “communicating”.

yepyoukno··on Ask HN: Why is there suddenly a downvote button?
Must be because you have sufficient karma points.

Use the power wisely!

yepyoukno··on HN Returning "Sorry."
Yeah, just Safari, when I’m trying to refresh the discussion on a random item. Even when the same link loads in another browser.

Maybe some kind of rate limit or cached browser meta or something?

yepyoukno··on Ask HN: How do you effectively communicate or present?
Scuttlebutt!

Our words are meaning full.

Their measure of meaning are the measure of our own character.

Yours still matter in a world, a mesh of meaning something’s, never not so concise as an ounce of thought, for whatsoever have thoughts to begot, meaningful or nice [agreeable]?

If you haven’t noticed, there are different psychological strategies for communications. While a smooth affable interface is pleasing to many. Intrinsic meaning is a reflection of personal character. It doesn’t have to be cringe, though anythingn truly meaningful said in a smooth context is “good” fodder for conversation.

I like to turn to the disowned temperament classifiers to explain how various “kinds” may be identified with. Though if you prefer to honeymoon over nerd fight, learn to discourse of astrology, it will be better socially regarded.

yepyoukno··on Ask HN: How do you effectively communicate or present?
Bless you for your noble intentions.

I’m not sure I have helpful advice for you, though I appreciate your observation and desire to improve in such an away.

We learn best by example. If you could find the writings of someone who’s way of speaking impresses you, even fiction, reading their words out loud may inspire your mind to optimize for this sort of communication style.

I do something similar for learning to speak for other purposes (story form, I like to tell stories orally.)

Your intention is a good one!
