yellow_postit··on AI 'kill switch' may need to be mandatory, Anthropic co-founder tells BBC
Dario has for sure burnt a lot of political and goodwill capital by endlessly playing both sides of the doomer and accl camps.
yellow_postit··on AI 'kill switch' may need to be mandatory, Anthropic co-founder tells BBC
There’s even a benchmark for kill switch efficacy!

yellow_postit··on AI is breaking our proxies for expertise
“ Like mathematics, software engineers are going to have to rebuild our cultural sense of the kind of work we value.” From the closing is the change I see going in at every job area and level.

My hunch is that this ultimately doubles back to those that excel at story telling and human coordination. As the AI systems “offload” not just production but I believe some initiation of what to build, the “why” and how to rally groups for any appreciably complex work matters more.

I also hope to see a plenty of solo shops succeeding in spaces that used to take entire teams, but (for now) remain convicted human coordination remains a key need for most endeavors.

yellow_postit··on Grok Bot
This is the growing pain of any “employer” and I suspect lots of startups and features coming to fill the void.

Start with a shared credit card. Then company credit cards. Then you layer in spend controls.

Now repeat but for “agents”.

Whether this is more near term inefficiency to drive output side actual efficiency remains to be seen. But great if you’re selling tokens!

yellow_postit··on Water system controllers don't belong on the internet, says ex-NSA chief
I sometimes think about how much the CIA risked setting back global health when using a fake vaccination program to find Bin Laden.
yellow_postit··on An interactive explorer for Benford's Law across real datasets
Neat! Benford’s Law was the first topic I dove into in undergrad math that got a minor publication. Given how well known it is for forensic accounting I’ve always wanted to look into convictions and see if the “average” fraudster has wised up and produces more realistic distributions.
yellow_postit··on Monetization Gateway: Charge for any resource behind Cloudflare via x402
Ads, especially personalized ads, are the alternative that powers much of the open internet.

More options are great.

yellow_postit··on Dark Sky Lighting
Many of the links have soft 404s as well. Seems like a dead site.
yellow_postit··on Indexing a year of video locally on a 2021 MacBook with Gemma4-31B (50GB swap)
As someone that naturally used a rule of 3 and em dashes I hate AI for taking that away from me.
yellow_postit··on Apparently Google hates us now
Get a custom domain. Strat using that. Route to Gmail to start but easily decouple.

It took me about a year of updates but now I rarely get anything to a @gmail

yellow_postit··on The Uncanny Valley and the Rising Power of Anti-AI Sentiment
This is a very US centric view in part because of the low confidence in the American government to be able to effectively regulate negative impacts.

yellow_postit··on Notion leaks email addresses of all editors of any public page
I’ve always liked this idea but I think it eventually ends back up with essentially our current system. Users have multiple devices so you quickly get to needing a sync service. Once that gets complex enough, then people will outsource to a third party and then we are back to a FB/Google/Apple sign in and data mgmt world.
yellow_postit··on Traders placed over $1B in perfectly timed bets on the Iran war
Just as parallel construction [1] is used by law enforcement to conceal methods and practices no reason to not expect the same for financial gain.

yellow_postit··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
I use Fastmail and the main difference I notice is less effective spam filtering — it’s good but not as great as Gmail was.

Overall it’s been an acceptable trade off and I’m glad years ago I switched to a custom domain for email so I can have portability.

yellow_postit··on Five years of running a systems reading group at Microsoft
In my experience it is a lot like finding time to work on "strategy". There's never really explicit time given, you have to make it in the day, and its often the most valuable time spent.
yellow_postit··on Where things stand with the Department of War
I am sympathetic to the argument that I’d rather elected officials that have a path to be removed have the control of use more so than unelected executives.
yellow_postit··on State of the Windows: What is going on with Windows 11?
Microsoft stopped chasing the education space with the wind down of 11SE [1].

yellow_postit··on Nvidia's $20B antitrust loophole
It will be interesting to see if this is an exit for investors and which ones. Given it wasn’t an acquisition but licensing.
yellow_postit··on Package managers keep using Git as a database, it never works out
While an earlier poster is over stating Ostrom’s Nobel prize winning work — it is regularly shown that averting the tragedy of the commons is not as insurmountable as the original coining of the phrase implied.
yellow_postit··on Weight loss jabs: What happens when you stop taking them
Many of the fly by night digital proscribes just jack the dosage to show rapid gains. Coupled with people lying on BMI to get a script is a bad combination and why it’s so obvious.
yellow_postit··on AGI fantasy is a blocker to actual engineering
Likely because (very?) few would associate LLMs in their current form with "digital slaves". Attributing personhood to a non-corporeal entity is likely a multi-generational change, if it ever happens.
yellow_postit··on Tell HN: Azure outage
Don’t forget you can’t dare offer water or food to those stuck in lines else that’s considered tampering in many (all?) locales in the US.

Mail in voting is just better all around for a geographically diverse place as the US and I wish would be adopted by all states.

yellow_postit··on Responses from LLMs are not facts
This feels like getting taught in school not to cite Wikipedia when the actual digital literacy challenge is deeper— learn where the info comes from and to critically think.
yellow_postit··on Board: New game console recognizes physical pieces, with an open SDK
Very cool. I love the tactical board game experience but automatic upkeep for rules is appealing.

As a parent I wish it had more details on the durability. I can just imagine spills, slams, non-game pieces being used and abused on this thing.

yellow_postit··on OpenAI’s promise to stay in California helped clear the path for its IPO
The Texas Stock Exchange launches next year and I predict we will see a lot of tech try to move to launch there given txse claim to have lower compliance and less esg needs.
yellow_postit··on 'World Models,' an old idea in AI, mount a comeback
Not mentioning Fei-Fei Li and her startup explicitly focused on world models is an interesting choice by the author.
yellow_postit··on GPT-5
Whether QE is a mechanism in the brain still seems up for debate from the quick literature review I tried, but would love to learn more.

Given the pace of quantum computing it doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility to “wire up” to LLMs in a couple years.

yellow_postit··on GPT-5
Is this not a tool that could be readily implemented and refined?
yellow_postit··on GPT-5
I like this mental model. Orchestration / Agents and using smaller models to determine the ideal tool input and check the output starts to look like delegation.
yellow_postit··on Hyatt Hotels are using algorithmic Rest “smoking detectors”
Watch it turns out you can tune the FP rate like how casinos can set the win rate on slot machines.
