yeetsfromhell··on Our fundamental right to shame and shun the New York Times
Once US society made the jump from "right vs wrong" to "good vs evil" it became an intractable problem.

@dang: was this a mistakenly flagged post? I don't think what I said was off topic or objectionable...to anyone, really.

yeetsfromhell··on BuzzFeed investors have pushed CEO Jonah Peretti to shut down entire newsroom
Funny I was using chrome on android the other day and the number of sites with huge ads that obscure content reminds me of popups in the early 2000's. Some mainstream sites are practically unusable. I suppose they've driven their engagement metrics by making a tiny 'close' button that's designed to make you inadvertently click the stupid ad.

I say we draft the ad people to defend Ukraine before we let them back into society on parole.

Maybe. Android works across tons of devices and the difference in battery life doesn't jump out to me compared to the fruit company. Linux on a laptop gets similar battery life to Windows in my experience, and that's without using kernel patches and crazy settings, etc.
yeetsfromhell··on The jerrycan design goes back over 80 years (2020)
The ones usually sold these days with the plastic caps on them are worse than useless, they leak all over and the safety nozzle on them leaks like hell too.
yeetsfromhell··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
I once read an essay by an administrator of a small college who was talking about some incentives for high tuition costs. The biggest for his school was that parents and prospective students expected any tuition to be high, and if it wasn't, people figured that to mean the quality of the education was lower compared to similarly sized colleges which charged a lot more but the education was basically identical. To keep the doors open, he substantially raised tuition and enrollment increased by a huge factor.
yeetsfromhell··on FOSS devs are burning out, quitting, and even sabotaging their own projects
Part of a workable solution might be to incentivize companies funding the FOSS they depend on. Tax incentives and the like. Developers only get so much say, get the beancounters involved.

One reason I haven't seen mentioned yet in this thread is that even for modern turbo diesels you are instructed in the owner's manual to let it cool for about 4-5minutes before shutoff. IIRC this allows the turbo to cool enough to not get damaged when there's no airflow. Funny enough they also tell you not to let it run too long, presumably because the engine is too cool to burn it completely and you get residue buildup; I believe this is due to the biodiesel they cut most fuel (diesel #2) with.
