yeetaccount4··on Nintendo Switch game cartridges taste offensively bad (2017)
I read a WWII book about wartime pilots doing crazy shit. At one point the wings freeze over and the alcohol spritzers for de-icing are all plugged up, so somehow it vents into the cabin and gets the pilots drunk from the fumes. I think they ended up landing on a glacier in the fog, thinking they were about to hit water.
yeetaccount4··on Are popular toxicity models simply profanity detectors?
It doesn’t cost the other party anything to say you were joking. Saying you’re offended can lead to lost economic opportunity for somebody.
yeetaccount4··on Are popular toxicity models simply profanity detectors?
Anyone can say they’re offended without any cost to themselves. It’s ‘cheap’, and the outcome is often very ‘expensive’ for the offender. You could even make the case that virtue is derived from being offended. This disproportionality invites bad faith. I’ve stopped caring about people’s offense.

Fuck that, you’re the big game in town, you get the big bitches. Fix your shit.

And yet I’m still annoyed enough to upvote them.

I’ve tried to understand Org mode but it seems like a mix of so many different goals and ideas that it’s just a giant spitball of miscellaneous solutions.

yeetaccount4··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
I’ve always figured this was what they wanted. They probably tie it to your IMEI so they can track you everywhere online and in the real world.

E: Seriously? This is a multi billion dollar industry. Oh no, Google would never do that…

yeetaccount4··on How E Ink developed full-color e-paper
Obsolete, but still functional for their intended purpose. The screen will fail before the components get tin whiskers, if you use it often-ish.

E ink readers will fail later because of a very low refresh rate, but as a screen monitor it may be a poor match.

Pixel-Qi full sun display mode may be a better match for what most want.

yeetaccount4··on How E Ink developed full-color e-paper
Depends on how things are set up with the refresh rate; subpixel rendering may have an effect IIRC. Details I don’t really understand, but e ink has a shorter lifespan than other tech.
yeetaccount4··on How E Ink developed full-color e-paper
Has there been any progress on extending e ink lifespan?
yeetaccount4··on ‘I was just scared’: Apple AirTags lead to stalking complaints
Airtags are creepy as fuck. Even if Android has built in airtag detection, it doesn’t solve the problem of people without up to date smartphones, or people that don’t know what any of those messages/warnings mean.
yeetaccount4··on ‘I was just scared’: Apple AirTags lead to stalking complaints
It shouldn’t be too difficult to remove the beeper from the device, or disable it somehow.
yeetaccount4··on Adding unusable RAM for tax reasons
Funny thing is a new superduty can match or exceed the highway mileage of a new 4Runner. As long as you aren’t cruising around town or catching red lights you’re not doing all that bad. ~20MPG in eco mode.
yeetaccount4··on Adding unusable RAM for tax reasons
I’ve heard that pickups got so big in the past decade or so because of Obama-era emission regulation. A bigger truck was classified differently and not subject to such strict guidelines, so when the old 3/4 and 1-ton trucks couldn’t possibly meet the new rules they got bigger to get around them.
yeetaccount4··on Police in tiny Alabama town suck drivers into legal ‘black hole’
Saying something measured and reasonable doesn’t get anyone talking at all. Creating a contentious debate gets you press.

In reality, the single issue should have been around qualified immunity. Get rid of that and the ducks will fall into line.

yeetaccount4··on Is old music killing new music?
I’ve heard about how music is written by labels these days. They get a bunch of writers in a hotel for a few days and brainstorm song themes and lines, then mix and match what works. Writers will get paid for a couple of words.

It’s no wonder the songs these days say nothing, to anyone, unless you’re a brain dead teenager or emotionally stunted adult. The tastes of which have driven the industry for decades now. I just want something that’s relevant.

What else is an cornered scammer supposed to do to save face?
yeetaccount4··on How the Native American population changed since the last census
It’s because being straight, white and not trans means you’re an evil oppressor to a lot of younger people these days. They at least have to claim bisexuality when they aren’t, or loudly proclaim their brown ethnicity when they’re in fact over 7/8 European and could claim a noble title and European citizenship.

It’s almost like people are judging everyone by the color of their skin instead of the content of their character.

yeetaccount4··on When did Maytag go bad? (2007)
There’s profit incentive, but also regulation to make them more efficient. Say they have an undersized motor now, you may have to wash your clothes a few times or do more small loads. This puts more hours on the poor motor and it burns out sooner, causing more waste.

Kind of like those toilets that use 30% less water per flush, but you have to flush them twice to get anything to go down.

This isn’t to say all regulation is bad, but poorly thought out regulation is the worst.

yeetaccount4··on U.S. Political Party Preferences Shifted Greatly During 2021
In my view, the issue is short term memory among voters and frustration with the political class and its inability to do do much at all. Since the other team is in office right now, people don’t like them.
yeetaccount4··on In defense of flat earthers (2020)
> These people do not listen to reason; they didn't reason themselves into the position and you cannot reason them out of it. The flat earthers doing the "experiments" keep coming up with reasons to keep on believing, even when their experiments are so blinkered and janky they show either nothing at all or that they are, in fact, wrong.

I’m late to the party here, but I recall reading (or watching) about one flat earther devising a somewhat novel, and actually very solid experiment for determining the roundness of the earth. Unfortunately, they thought their methods or testing apparatuses were flawed when the results indicated that the earth was in fact pretty roundish. They’ll be back with a fresh experiment, no doubt, to confirm their pre-existing notions.

yeetaccount4··on The Charisma Machine: The life, death, and legacy of One Laptop per Child
Because it works wells enough for education purposes and would help prepare them for computers that many of them would encounter eventually. Sugar was well intentioned wankery. You could have had special use case software for off the grid lessons, but giving them all a bizarro UI that wasn’t like anything anyone had ever seen before didn’t make a whole lot of sense. I’d say it was one of the big reasons OLPC failed. Also, had they forked off of existing DE/WM around at the time it would have been less buggy and would have involved less effort on their part. Sugar dropped me to console more than once, and I don’t expect most students or their teachers knew what to do besides reboot and probably lose work at that point.
yeetaccount4··on The Charisma Machine: The life, death, and legacy of One Laptop per Child
They could have just used or written something that introduced them to standard UI metaphors instead of giving them Sugar. Probably would have saved effort.
yeetaccount4··on The Charisma Machine: The life, death, and legacy of One Laptop per Child
I gotta say the one thing the OLPC did right was the display. I wish every laptop had a full sun mode, that thing was awesome.

IIRC there were no moving parts (fan? don’t recall), which was another huge plus.

Everything else was pretty bad. Sugar (the UI) was awful and would prepare 3rd world kids for exactly no other computer. The keyboard was borderline unusable. OLPC was severely underpowered when it was released. I only ever had one, so I never got to test out interconnectivity…it seemed like it could have had a lot of potential, but judging by the rest of the marketing embellishments it probably sucked too. I seem to recall having difficulty with wifi — to be fair, at the the time, most computers had questionable wireless capabilities.

yeetaccount4··on Essence: Desktop operating system built from scratch
This reminds me of an OS built with asm for Dell desktop PC’s around 2005-ish. The DE had most things you’d expect from a Linux distro at the time, including true transparency (IIRC), and the whole thing fit on a floppy. Saw it in a Linux mag at the time.

How’s this better than a $15 mortar and pestle?

I mean for $200 let’s mill that bitch out of a solid block of Ti and give it tungsten carbide burrs…okay that’s probably a $1000 kitchen status symbol.
