ydb··on Power Your Dreams with Xbox Series X
I'm excited for the coming console generation, but I can't shake the feeling that it's all entirely pointless in 2019. There was a thread some days ago about the changes in hardware since the NES days, and how it's all basically just generalized PC hardware purposefully locked down in software. Like, I loved Bloodborne as much as the next gamer, but are all the wasted resources & labor really worth it?

On a side note:

> Power Your Dreams with Xbox Series X

Can we get a more informative post title? The current one reeks of marketing clickbait.

ydb··on Google Gives Feds 1,500 Phone Locations in Unprecedented ‘Geofence’ Search
> However rationally I think there is a balance.

There is a balance. I know this is Hacker News and we're all supposed to be progressive technical vanguards fighting against The Man, but genuine bad guys exist out there. And we need to protect ourselves from them.

This isn't a case of an innocent man going to prison just so we can jail a hundred criminals. This is giving up a modicum of privacy in order to make the world safer for everybody. I think that's entirely reasonable.

Then why have this fuss about "Bernie Blindness" and the mainstream media supposedly suppressing his poll results?

Seriously, just think for a minute; there's something else going on here. It's likely just Bernie Bros making a spectacle out of nothing and ruining any chance we have to oppose King Cheeto.

ydb··on Instagram Face: The rise of selfie make-up and quest for hyper-perfection (2018)
Agreed. Most of my friend group (women in their late 20s and early 30s) make this face and it just appalls me. I think Baudrillard's conception of simulacra & simulation [1] is the perfect vehicle for understanding the "uncanny valley" effect this creates.

ydb··on Millennials Are Leaving Religion and Not Coming Back
This is troubling. Religion and its traditional family values is integral to both social and economic survival in the 21st century.

I hate to be a "doomer" but this is a bad sign for the society we live in.

ydb··on [dead]
What is this supposed to tell me besides that Bernie is irrelevant to the mainstream and thus irrelevant to your average American?

You guys seriously think this is some kind of conspiracy? Jeez, and I thought Democrats were above all that Q stuff.

ydb··on U.S. Beer Consumption Has Declined for Six-Consecutive Years
Good. Drinking, whether it's "craft" beer or tallboys of bottom-shelf gutrot, is unequivocally a disease.

Hackers, do yourselves a favor and drink a glass of water instead of cracking open another cold one.

ydb··on Ask HN: What are your thought on online communities using shadow banning?
> It's extremely useful to isolate people from the wider community, and if you do it properly it's not detectable. It definitely has its place

Absolutely agreed -- consider the impact of Russian bots on the 2016 U.S. elections. There will always be malicious actors in every social system. If you do not isolate them, their perverse ideas will spread like a cancer through the population.

ydb··on SuperShuttle is going out of business
Damn, so sounds like a MoviePass situation? VCs subsidizing transportation now instead of entertainment?
ydb··on I left MongoDB due to their business relationship with ICE
Please. When can we be rid of the illusion that politics and business should be related at all?

Before America entered WWII, it sold weapons and arms to countries on both sides. Yet MongoDB sells SAAS software services to ICE they're unethical? Talk about hypocrisy.

ydb··on Stephen Wolfram Testifying at the Senate about A.I
Excellent! Besides maybe Geoffrey Hinton, I can't think of a better person to represent A.I. to laymen.

Say what you will about Wolfram and his personality, but the man is an icon of approachable and engaging science/math writing.

Heck, once I started reading A New Kind of Science I could barely put it down -- I carried the damn thing on the subway even! Much better than Jane Austen anyway...

ydb··on UK's disused mine shafts could be used to store renewable energy
Pfft. Talk about a canary in the coal mine.

There are a million better uses for empty mine shafts... Beowulf cluster anyone??

ydb··on A Recession Hasn’t Arrived (Yet). Here’s Where You’ll See It First
Recessions are good for business. Plain and simple.

The media does their best to try and scare you into doing all sounds of bizarre and nonsensical things when the markets "crash." Really, if you employ basic facts and logic, the best thing to do is just business as usual.

Stop futzing with saving money and buy stuff -- that's how a market works and keeps functioning! It's Econ 101! I'm sure most of you smart fellas on Hacker News already knew that though. :)

ydb··on Jack Dorsey Wants to Help You Create Your Own Twitter
I'm not so sure... it's really hard to trust @jack after all he's done at Twitter. The guy is a perfect liberal centrist who doesn't understand the value of open markets and competition is a well-oiled economic machine.

I'd rather he (and Twitter) prioritizes making Twitter less crap instead of doing all the PR mumbo jumbo with supposedly open standards and the like.

ydb··on Movements as Markets
Every movement is an aspect of the market. That's what markets are if you took Econ 101 back in college.

The market is everything; it's you, me, your dog, your neighbor's dog, and your neighbor's dog's chew toy.

That's why a free market is so important! It's only hard to understand if you've been fed propaganda all your life.

ydb··on SoftBanks next big crisis may be brewing in India
That's a little disconcerting, given the massive size of India and its existing problems with wealth inequality.

Can anybody from HN with first-hand experience in the startup ecosystem in India shed some light on this article?

ydb··on Disney's Plan to Fly X-Wings over Park Speaks to Perception Manipulation Tactics
Is this a submarine[1] article? Honestly reads like CIA agitprop regarding UFOs and the like. I mean, he quite literally says in the subtitle:

> should remind us that seeing shouldn't mean believing.

It's clear to anyone who has done research into UFOs that the whole phenomena was a US military psyop (I can provide sources if anybody asks). However, the new stuff coming out from the community may finally reveal the truth: [2][3]

ydb··on Quantum Supremacy Will Be Re-Achieved Again and Again
This is business as usual. More "quantum supremacy" is a measly PR tactic, mostly intended to frighten competitors. Just like the US and the USSR during the Cold War; say intimidating stuff in the open in order to manipulate the public.
ydb··on Illusory Truth Effect
Shit. I got this all the time with my ex. Combine that with gaslighting[1] and you have a recipe for corn-fed, all-American propaganda.

If people repeat stuff back to you, make sure you repeat stuff back to them! Force feedback! Conglomerate!

[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaslighting

ydb··on McMindfulness: How mindfulness became the new capitalist spirituality
Absolutely appalling. This is something that I've intuited happening for many years now, but couldn't quite find the words to describe. This phenomena is pervasive and, dare I say, integral to the functioning of capital in the 21st century.

People are more alienated now than ever before in the course of history, so it follows that the machinations of capital come to a pseudo-religion in order to pacify dissent. It's staggering, and should give everybody on Hacker News pause.

ydb··on Massachusetts police dept became the first in the nation to test a robot dog
I think this is a truly brave and forward-thinking idea by the police department. We should not be risking the lives of doggos in the streets only for them to be violently assaulted by thugs. These animals deserve the utmost respect, and I applaud this department for thinking about and thoroughly considering animal rights and ethics. Hopefully the rest of the country adopts this approach; I think it will do lots to deter crime too!
ydb··on How to annotate everything
Could have used this list while doing research for my Masters! However, I don't think I was as well-versed in emacs back then either, ha ha.
ydb··on Twitter CEO Endorses DuckDuckGo
Yes @jack yes! Hopefully more high-profile thought leaders will enter the public discourse to advise on more sane, privacy-respecting alternatives.

I'm glad I was relieved of hating @jack at least momentarily. :')

ydb··on Sweet Home 3D is a free interior design application
Neat neat neat!! Seriously would have killed for this back when my husband and I were designing & building our house. Why couldn't the tech disruption have come sooner? :)
ydb··on Please Buy Less
I think this is some serious Marxist agitprop. It is absolutely appalling that people think we ought to buy less as if that's what the problem is. The problem is not unethical consumption! The difficulty is not in alienating labor from capital! These posadist fools think we will be saved by aliens.

Look fellas, buy your girl that Gucci bag if she wants it. The gal may as well looks fashionable while we descent into collapse.

ydb··on Lines of code that changed everything
Brilliant suggestion. All my most proficient and excellent times while programming were among the purview of garbage collectors. They have assisted my career in more ways than any conference talk ever has. In fact, I'd say GC basically saved me from burnout.

I wish I could garbage collect my ex the same way that D rocks my garbage for me!

ydb··on Book Review: Radical Markets
Fascinating, wholesome take on radical capital markets. Sometimes, as a liberal democrat, I am taken aback at just how much our economic system has given us. All this in spite of the dotcom crash or the '08 nuclear meltdown. As a woman proud of her mediating centrist tendency, I view much of what was said in this article as a legitimate pro-market Marxist position. Great!
ydb··on French economist scours spreadsheets to find secret offshore accounts
This may be considered OT, but since we are on the subject of the "Super Rich" I'd just like to remark that I've never understood the cult of personality surrounding Beyonce. The people I know who like Beyonce, really like Beyonce. It's borderline religious worship.

About the only pop star that has ever made sense to me for was Michael Jackson, and that's pushing it.

ydb··on The Trouble with “Finding Your People” Online
Hey, that's a bit harsh don't you think? I mean, I enjoyed the writing, and if he's a fedora I may as well be a mustache and cigar myself! :)
ydb··on Faux Rogan
Not sure, ask the parent commenter. I was merely attempting a rebuttal to their remark.
