yc-kraln··on Unimpressed by online classes, college students file lawsuits for refunds
I think it's almost exactly the opposite. No one cares what college I went to, but the network I built during my time at University is still paying dividends.
yc-kraln··on Linux touchpad like a MacBook: April 2020 update
Badly, which is why cross-platform applications stand out like a sore thumb on MacOS
yc-kraln··on Resources for understanding cryptocurrency and blockchain technology
I understand it just fine. Show me a business model that isn't built on speculation or fraud, and then I'll pay attention.
yc-kraln··on Ask HN: Why are there so few part-time jobs?
There are many people in Germany who work 4/5 or 3/5 jobs. I was previously 3/5 and moved to 4/5, but it's nice to have the extra time.

For the employers here, the only downside is if they are being measured by head-count (but even then, I count as 4/5 of a headcount...)

yc-kraln··on Google allows G Suite administrators to monitor and audit user emails
I don't know why, but the concept of a "Private" Facebook account is really funny to me.
yc-kraln··on Tell HN: Zoom truncates passwords to 32 chars
easy enough; on next successful login re-hash the full length of the password and store it.
yc-kraln··on Ask HN: Who is hiring right now?
I would add that remote is also a possibility for certain positions. I am hiring also devrel roles (not yet posted) as well as Android Systems Engineers and Architects (posted above)
yc-kraln··on Fed to inject $1.5T to prevent ‘unusual disruptions’ in markets
You act like we aren't capable of doing two things at once.

Sorry, I am perfectly capable of acting while still pointing my finger at the people who are actively trying to make this worse.

Maybe you can afford to play kum-bay-yah but perhaps it's not your life or the lives of your loved ones which have been doomed by this ineptitude. Civility is poison to irrational discourse.

yc-kraln··on Hackers Can Clone Millions of Toyota, Hyundai, and Kia Keys
Currently working in the Car industry, previously in the access control industry (and have developed active RFID systems which include timing information to prevent relay attacks)

Yes, you can do this. I have done this (restricted the negotiation to about 12 meters)--you're essentially racing the speed of light, see DE102012104955A1. Most of the reasonable approaches are patented by NXP.

yc-kraln··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2020)
MBition | Android Domain Architect | Berlin | ONSITE, VISA + Assistance

MBition is building the next generation of infotainment platforms for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. We are looking for someone with deep experience with the Android ecosystem, preferably maintenance of an AOSP distribution or similar, for a leading role defining how we will be supporting Android applications in future vehicles.

No posting quite yet (soon) but send me an email: jeffrey . katz @ daimler dotcom :)

yc-kraln··on An app can be a home-cooked meal
Modern flat screens are actually far more simple than the TVs of yore; that actually makes them more difficult to repair. You will typically have a power supply (and if not an LED backlight, then a high voltage one as well) and a "T-Con" board, which usually has one honking big SoC on it which is both Vendor and TV specific. There isn't that much to repair aside from the power supply, and honestly you don't really need a schematic for that to repair it.
yc-kraln··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2020)
MBition (Daimler AG) | Full Time | Onsite / Remote Friendly | Berlin, Germany

We are a 100% subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG building a new generation of infotainment platform (think navigation + instrument cluster). This platform is already planned to hit the road in future car lines and will be the interface that future drivers will engage with when they sit in their car, plan their journey or choose what music to listen to.

More than 33 open postings. Security, C++ Dev, Devops, Product Owners, iOS, Test engineers, as well as System Architects, IT Infra, and more.

yc-kraln··on Staff emails claim Boeing 777X ‘shares Max problem’
Oof. I have to assume your last sentence was intended.
yc-kraln··on What kind of data is my new car collecting?
Starting in 2021 (or is it 2022?) a driver-facing camera will be required to get a 5 star safety rating. The idea is to catch "distracted" or otherwise incapacitated drivers and prevent accidents, but I am sure it will get used for other things...
yc-kraln··on T1: A Modern Programming Language for Constrained Environments
and yet that sounds like a library and not a core language construct.
yc-kraln··on Top Paying Tech Companies by SWE Level
Nah, I got an offer letter from Amazon in Berlin, and it was easily 1/10th the compensation they offered to people in NYC or SF (compared with Levels). I made sure with the recruiter that I understood the position and the internal salary ranking--then I told them I would not be taking the position as I found their offer insulting.
yc-kraln··on Show HN: Pure C WebRTC implementation for embedded devices
There are a few widely-used embedded SSL stacks, of which mbed TLS is probably one worth targeting or adding support for (wolfSSL is another.) So long as this requires OpenSSL it's gonna basically be stuck in Linux.
yc-kraln··on Sinkholed
Domain names are not property, and this is not under the pervue of law enforcement. The country registrar (NIXI) is working together with someone to prevent abuse of their systems. When you purchase a DNS entry, you agree to this sort of thing as part of the ToS.
yc-kraln··on Rxdb: A reactive database where you can subscribe to the result of a query
I read through your whole readme and I still am not able to answer the question: "what kind of project would I use GUN for?"

or, even, "what is gun replacing?"

I mean, it looks interesting and I would like to play around with it, but I don't understand enough to know what kind of stuff I can build with it.

yc-kraln··on Ask HN: Cool stuff that's still completely unregulated?
I don't just agree with you, I'm taking the first few steps (on the AI side).
yc-kraln··on Why some software developers hate Agile
The documentation one is the one that completely throws me for a loop, and why I will never be on-board with anything claiming to be Agile. You know what? sometimes the documentation is more important than the working code. We're not all building crappy web properties as an agency, sometimes we are building stuff that is supposed to last longer than any one developer's career.

Sometimes just documenting what the thing is supposed to do and why would solve so many issues, but since people have gotten hooked on capital-A Agile so much has gone by the wayside, or been delegated to non-technical roles.

yc-kraln··on Ultraprocessed Foods – A New Theory of Obesity
About a year ago I started being hypervigilant on my food intake: Three meals a day, no snacks, take a picture of everything. No other restrictions. In the past year I've lost 75 pounds...
yc-kraln··on [dead]
I find the separation between "the internet" interesting. You mean... a connected group of all humanity?
yc-kraln··on I’m Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
I am an American citizen. My co-founder is German. What do the steps look like to get him eligible to work out of the US (say, if we're accepted to YC) and how does the company need to be structured to make it as easy as possible?

Thanks in advance!

Some of us are working to change that... :)
yc-kraln··on A Boeing Code Leak Exposes Security Flaws Deep in a 787's Guts
This sounds like a good idea, until you realize that the head unit is typically the thing in the car with the most computing power (think AI workloads as well as a GPU and multiple ARM cores) and the thing in the car with the network connection.

A trivial use case which requires write access to the CAN bus is the navigation system informing cruise control of an upcoming hill.

Equally trivial would be the seat position memory or profiles being applied through the main touchscreen.

(I work for a company that is developing infotainment systmes)

yc-kraln··on Zelda Screen Transitions Are Undefined Behaviour
I don't think I would call this undefined behavior... the behavior is defined by what happens on the hardware when it's executed!

There are many, many classical effects on raster hardware which are accomplished by changing registers within the horizontal blanking period... copper bars, mode 7, certain paralax scrolling. When you're on a resource limited system it becomes an art to get the most out of the platform. Look at the difference between Mario 64 and Conker's Bad Fur Day... or Genji: Days of the Blade (PS3) vs Persona 5 (PS3) Even with modern consoles, there is a marked improvement in the apparent visual quality over the lifetime of the device, as developers learn how to squeeze more and more out of the platform.

yc-kraln··on Anomalous CPU utilization on Windows build node caused by ads
WINE will never work for these use cases because the professional software is purchased and licensed for Windows. Not on Windows? No support for you. And each one of these (let's call them "Professional Computing Niches") has its own ecosystem of plugins and extensions and scripts and nonsense that have been built up over decades and are essential to keep things running. As a business you'd be bonkers to "switch" a working system.
yc-kraln··on STM32 Open Source Multimeter
I am missing a hefty fuse on those inputs. The thing is a deathtrap :(
yc-kraln··on Show HN: Browser Extension to Refine the HN Experience
