yborg··on Mpv – A free, open-source, and cross-platform media player
Huh, that explains it, I was wondering why I was having problems with some video that VLC would even playback correctly, I didn't think to try the stock mpv.
yborg··on Show HN: Pie Menu – a radial menu for macOS
So for Adobe apps, for which this would be very useful, they install by default as Adobe <appname> <year>, i.e. "Adobe Photoshop 2023". I have several revisions installed for most of them for various reasons. When I attempt to add a shortcut from pie-menu.com, it tells me "Application adobe photoshop is not installed on your computer" :(
yborg··on The story, as best I can remember, of the origin of Mosaic and Netscape [video]
His blog is linked to his Mastodon account: @jwz@mastodon.social
yborg··on Humans began to rapidly accumulate technological knowledge 600k years ago

yborg··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Isn't it also that Nvidia chips are basically unobtainable right now anyway?
yborg··on What the damaged Svalbard cable looked like

yborg··on Firefox search update
Isn't this exactly what Google does in Chrome?
yborg··on Not an iPad Pro Review: Why iPadOS Still Doesn't Get the Basics Right
The Surface Pro seems to be exactly what you want, it must be dominating the iPad in unit volume.
yborg··on Leaked deck reveals how OpenAI is pitching publisher partnerships
Everything else is going to be a shill, too. 'People' will eventually have to pay for these valuations.
yborg··on Attackers spread backdoor via eScan antivirus software update process
Avast actually had a trojan horse product whose main purpose was collecting browsing history for sale to data brokers ... that you paid a subscription fee for.

yborg··on TSMC's debacle in the desert: Missed deadlines and tension among coworkers
>TSMC are succeeding because of these things, not in spite of them

This was the conventional wisdom about Japan in the 1980s as well, and they fell into the abyss with everyone else when China was capitalized and could offer labor for 1/4 the cost. The tactics that get you there aren't necessarily the ones that keep you there.

yborg··on Firefox Proton UI userChrome.css fixes. (2021)
As noted, there are quite a few of these, I use this project:

https://github.com/Aris-t2/CustomCSSforFx.

It's actively maintained and lets me put the tab bar directly above the content but you can set it up to fully return you to the days of Firefox 4 if you want...

yborg··on Difficulty levels of most European languages for Americans
You have to learn a new alphabet for Russian. This is also one of the reasons for the high difficulty classification of the Asian languages that have their own scripts.
yborg··on ActivityPub/Nostr/At-Bluesky Compared
They mean the freedom to impose their views on others, because if the ignorant can just be made to hear the 'truth' they will believe it too. Having the ability to remove such toxicity from the much larger community of people who genuinely want share ideas is a strength of the platform, not a weakness.
yborg··on Deaths at a California skydiving center, but the jumps go on
Reminds me of Skydive Chicago, whose founder died there in a jump accident after serving time in federal prison for also running a drug smuggling operation. They also had a dodgy safety record at the time, but this was more than 20 years ago.
yborg··on Receive push notifications from your rice cooker
Try replacing the clock battery on a unit that has one :/
yborg··on XZ backdoor: "It's RCE, not auth bypass, and gated/unreplayable."
An insider could just be tasked to look for exploitable vulnerabilities in existing code and compile this information for outside entities without ever having to risk inserting a purpose-made backdoor. Considering the security state of most large codebases, there would be a bottomless well of them.
yborg··on Intel Brags of $152B in Stock Buybacks. Why Does It Need an $8B Subsidy?
The positive ROI may accrue primarily to the top executives who are in a position to directly make that decision. Especially in a field like semiconductor processing where risks are high on new investment, it is almost always a lower risk decision to buyback the stock. I don't know the specifics of Otellini's pay package, but I would assume that his tenure resulted in massive wealth for himself, so this is certainly rational economic behavior but severely damaged the company.
yborg··on GoFetch: New side-channel attack using data memory-dependent prefetchers
Yes, it saves time vs. starting a discussion on "that crypto cache sidechannel attack that one team in China found".
yborg··on AWS acquires Talen's 960MW nuclear data center campus in Pennsylvania
In that case, according to capitalism there should be massive private equity investment in transformers right about now.
yborg··on 'Your pay is still – not – going up too fast'
AI models don't eat.
yborg··on Joplin is an open source note-taking app
Joplin has a WYSIWYG editor mode. https://joplinapp.org/help/apps/rich_text_editor Joplin also can use external editors. https://joplinapp.org/help/apps/external_text_editor
yborg··on Old vs. new growth trees and the wood products they make
There was actually a company that specialized in salvaging sunken logs from old lumber operations in Lake Superior.

https://www.nytimes.com/1997/09/24/us/with-timber-scarce-old...

Company went out of business (ran out of logs?) in 2015.

yborg··on The 'Atlanta Magnet Man' is saving our car tires, one bike ride at a time
Doesn't solve the problem, just pushes the stuff into the curbs where it then is a concentrated threat to bike tires. What they should do is mount a big electromagnet on the back of the sweeper to then pick any metal up.
yborg··on U.S. opens UnitedHealth antitrust probe
You didn't even mention Optum Bank, which they use to also sponge up that sweet HSA cash lest any drop of healthcare spend somehow escape UHG's toll.
yborg··on Bluesky announces data federation for self hosters
>used for 30+ years = failed

I don't understand why so many technical people equate monopoly with success. I use IRC every day.

yborg··on A peek at Intel's future foundry tech
As they always say in investing, "Past performance is no guarantee of future results."

It wasn't that long ago that Intel was dominating and it looked like nobody would ever dislodge them. Once the top management that drove a company to success retire, they are almost guaranteed to be replaced by people whose main skill set was political navigating in a large bureaucracy and then the decline begins.

yborg··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5
Or can't use ... I have a newish work account and downloaded Gemini on a Pixel 8 Pro and get "Gemini isn't available" and "Try again later" with no explanation of why not and when.
yborg··on Getting rid of bed bugs: trickier than ever
My grandfather was in the German army in WW2 and he said they called them Fallschirmjäger - paratroopers - for exactly this reason, they would climb tent walls to drop onto beds that had their legs placed in tins of water to try and keep them off.
yborg··on Alaska Airlines flight 1282 NTSB preliminary report [pdf]
I'm guessing twice as much corporate effort is currently being deployed to find this guy than is being applied to fixing Boeing's quality system.
