yborg··on IKEA launches new smart home range with 21 Matter-compatible products
The FYRTUR blinds were kinda crap, constantly had issues with them losing their minds and having to redo the setup. I also have the later Tredansen cellular shades, and those have been good ... but I just checked and those seem to be discontinued as well.

Perils of being early adopter, but kind of soured on the whole smart home concept unless you are wealthy enough to redo all of your home lighting and window treatments every 10 years. Apart from the effort, it creates yet more e-waste. I have 30+ year old manual window shades and lamps and they all still work.

yborg··on Tether is now the 17th largest holder of US debt
I guess banking isn't a good business then.
yborg··on Apple will phase out Rosetta 2 in macOS 28
Photoshop plugins also.
yborg··on Starcloud
This. We really have hit Internet bubble hype levels, this could be a Silicon Valley episode. "My pitch deck is one slide. 'It's AI... IN SPACE!'"
yborg··on How to turn liquid glass into a solid interface
iPad Pro 3rd gen definitely got much more sluggish with 26. Wish I hadn't updated it now, but wanted to try the new windowing paradigm (not really worth it on a 12" screen).
yborg··on Open Social
It's literally a feature - individual users can set post auto-deletion on their instance. Because a government could suddenly start firing people from their jobs for some shitpost they made a decade ago.

But you have the fact that this is the Internet, and somebody will have archived your post no matter what you or your host instance does. So you can rest assured that whatever you wrote on Mastodon is out there somewhere...

yborg··on Yt-dlp: Upcoming new requirements for YouTube downloads
Why are your milspec customers downloading from YouTube? This is the Deno use case being discussed.
yborg··on $2 WeAct Display FS adds a 0.96-inch USB information display to your computer
It wasn't worth the extra cost to Apple to support it since the vast majority of consumers didn't care about it one way or the other.
yborg··on A revolution in English bell ringing
Very few churches in the American suburbs have bells, and most have replaced them with speakers playing recorded bells if they have anything at all :(
yborg··on The best YouTube downloaders, and how Google silenced the press
Firefox extension to right-click YT links directly to Freetube https://github.com/MStankiewiczOfficial/RedirectTube.
yborg··on Plugin System
IINA has been around for quite a while, it's a front end for mpv. Pretty much Just Werks, it's my standard video playback client.
yborg··on 16-inch softball
If you've played more than like 10 games :/ Growing up in Chicago, "softball" meant 16" and nobody used mitts for casual games and you could count on at least a jammed finger in any game. The amount of momentum such a large "soft" ball has is deceptive.
yborg··on Are we decentralized yet?
Threads barely interchanges with the rest of the Fediverse, it's basically bridged. By this argument you could include Truth Social and Gab, which are directly based on Mastodon source.
yborg··on Are we decentralized yet?
Bluesky user count is the same order of magnitude as Mastodon and is centralized. I think your argument is actually that if you are on a minority platform your wants and needs for how that platform operates are irrelevant. I suppose that's true if you aren't on the platform, but I don't think it's true if you are.
yborg··on Gemini 2.5 Flash Image
I don't want to converse with a 4 year old with the world's photo libraries at its disposal. I spent 10 minutes trying to convince the model to add a watch to a person's left arm instead of the right arm and it would not do it, it apparently could not get the idea on this particular image. If I had a drawing tool I could circle where I wanted it and say 'THERE, stupid'. Next year when we have AGI all of this will be moot of course, but for now Photoshop isn't going away.
yborg··on Gemini 2.5 Flash Image
Yeah, it doesn't look like the Safety Settings actually do anything, it refuses to edit anything with any words that could be construed to have sexual connotation even with restrictions all turned off.
yborg··on Why are anime catgirls blocking my access to the Linux kernel?
>do you really need to be rescraping every website constantly Yes, because if you believe you out-resource your competition, by doing this you deny them training material.
yborg··on Gemma 3 270M: Compact model for hyper-efficient AI
Yes, Vision Pro has really solved VR.
yborg··on Show HN: Petrichor – a free, open-source, offline music player for macOS
Get a malware warning when trying to open disk image, Sequoia refuses to open it :(
yborg··on Xfinity using WiFi signals in your house to detect motion
I remember reading this paper when it came out, didn't think it would be commercializable, and here we are.

yborg··on Transparent Ambition
Apple re-running the entire Windows Vista Metro arc.
yborg··on Tell HN: Beware confidentiality agreements that act as lifetime non competes
Since a huge chunk of comp in finance is bonus, especially if you're a rainmaker, I don't see how this is a win.
yborg··on SpaceX Starship 36 Anomaly
The Viking landers were the first attempt by the US to land on Mars. The Soviets actually soft-landed first on their second try but the lander failed after transmitting one corrupted image. There were certainly many failed Mars missions by various countries, but the Vikings at least got it right on the first go.
yborg··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
Patiently awaiting the Teams AI filter to automatically apply Apple Keynote Hands in video conferences.
yborg··on Apple Notes Expected to Gain Markdown Support in iOS 26
They haven't officially announced it.
yborg··on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70
The income part of SS is more or less subsistence level, which arguably was its intention to keep the elderly from begging in the streets. But in the dystopian US healthcare system, Medicare is arguably the more important part of the social net. Without it, you are not going to afford any healthcare in old age.

If this budget hits the PAYGO limits, which is basically guaranteed, that will trigger automatic cuts to Medicare, so they can backdoor cut the program without anybody voting for that.

yborg··on Denmark to raise retirement age to 70
Without establishing a hermetic environment a la the Amish, assimilation happens automatically in the next generation if a nation has basic structures in place like public education to some minimum standard and basic anti-discrimination laws to allow economic advancement. Children absorb the culture that surrounds them, often to their parents' dismay.
yborg··on EPA Plans to Shut Down the Energy Star Program
That's probably the main reason they want to do away with it. Eliminating any semblance of independent factual information across the board means that the truth becomes whatever the best bankrolled says it is. I could see them eliminating the MPG/eMPG ratings on vehicles next.
yborg··on Heart disease deaths worldwide linked to chemical widely used in plastics
Aren't steel food cans usually lined as well?
yborg··on California Attorney General issues consumer alert for 23andMe customers
Insurance company sees you have a marker for some chronic illness or cancer or whatever and suddenly you can't get life insurance anywhere or have a massive premium. They could even deduce this if only your parents' DNA is available.

Current statute in the US only restricts using this data for health insurance as far as I know; and even if it's straight illegal, the playbook now is just break the rule of law and do whatever you want. I admire your altruism, but our society will not reward you for it.
