yayr··on Meta does everything OpenAI should be
I am sure that they would have found a way to also align a closed approach with their business goals if they wanted to.

However, they chose not to. And I assume the the history of e.g. android, pytorch and other open source technologies had a lot to do with it.

yayr··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
If I read the bill correctly, any entity with an at least 20% chinese ownership stake (by a person or company) falls under this law...

What are the other 2nd and 3rd order effects of this?

yayr··on Meta Horizon OS
if it takes a similar course as the form factors of mobiles from the 1990s to today it may become quite convenient to use... Also many including me prefer Wikipedia over printed encyclopedias. Getting that context while navigating the world may even become a necessity to collaborate or compete with AIs efficiently in the future.

On the other hand I do appreciate beauty in nature and design.

But why not have both?

yayr··on SearXNG is a free internet metasearch engine
I would assume that the relaying can strip the request from identifying information such as IP, cookies and other tracking mechanisms that you get when visiting e.g. google.com.
yayr··on German state ditches Microsoft for Linux and LibreOffice
1. Every software needs resources to be maintained and improved. Those resources finally will need to be paid for by someone.

2. Getting Linux and LibreOffice does not get you a functioning productivity environment. You still need mail, calendars, shared document storage, web conferencing, security etc. There are various levels of usability in those and on basic levels you could get those already 30 years ago mostly. But not on a level, where you could reliably have your workforce be flexibly working from home.

So, let's see how it plays out, but it is not making life easier for the IT admins I guess...

yayr··on Grok
scheme 1: agents for copyright holders continuously scan for IP addresses who host copyrighted content and start legal actions.

scheme 2: criminal groups infect copyrighted content with malware to exploit downloaders of such content.

yayr··on Vision Pro: What we got wrong at Oculus that Apple got right
I like the suggestion to "Launch Android 2D tablet apps natively on Quest". Imagine, that you can pin these apps somewhere fix in physical space or walk around with them with fix positioning while being in a high quality pass through...
yayr··on Ask HN: Who else is working on nothing?
I don't understand why having the opportunity as an individual and species of defying entropy and all the consequences this would bring should be meaningless...
yayr··on An In-depth Look at Gemini's Language Abilities
The context in simulated environments of games is far less complex than the real world. Also the available interactions far less. It would be different if the agent would be exposed to the real world and use multisensory data to predict the next "token", i.e. thought or action.
yayr··on Tesla again threatens to sue Cybertruck buyers who try to resell the cars
I used to see such tactics for concert tickets of famous rock bands to avoid high black market prices. Would not have expected this for a 100k vehicle... Interesting demand curve!
yayr··on Sam Altman exposes the charade of AI accountability
I am not sure, if the motives are much more simple:

1. there is a board member, who has at least 40m USD invested into a company, that is now effectively competing with OpenAi (i.e. Quora with poe.com) since the most recent announcements. ...and by the way has a history of sacking founders who don't agree with him.

https://www.businessinsider.com/the-sudden-mysterious-exit-o...

2. Whoever wants to make significant progress in foundation models needs massive compute, which a non-profit has a hard time simply getting donated.

So why should the obvious not be the case? Sam simply trying to get money with a viable business model, so that progress in AI research can actually get funded internally. This unfortunately crossed the business interests of a board member, who wants him out.

yayr··on Doesn't Adam D'Angelo Have a Conflict of Interest in Ongoing Dispute?
interesting question, look at my previous post here, there is some more background on how deep financially he is actually entangled with competing services.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38361320

yayr··on Adam D'Angelo founder conflict at Quora relevant for OpenAI?
it is also worth mentioning, that poe.com which is Quoras chatbot is competing with some of the newer OpenAi offerings, especially for creator monetization. Combine that with the fact, that Adam D'Angelo has put apparently more than 40m USD in the Series B into the company while he has now a board seat at OpenAi...

yayr··on Meta is banning people from advertising after running ads for Python and Pandas
this is seriously such a hostile behaviour pattern of most tech companies. It should be banned by EU and US regulation
yayr··on Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses
Video: Vertical default/1440 x 1920 pixels at 30 fps is disappointing. Future VR headsets will have a much higher resolution.
yayr··on Freelancers aren’t happy with Japan’s new invoice system
I assume that a rate of 10% VAT is rather low in comparison internationally (e.g. EU is around 20 %).

Also for typical business customers it should be identical to purchase something for a net amount of x or for a net amount of x plus taxes. They can deduct the taxes anyway and the net amount is identical. That is why usually you can display prices to business customers without VAT.

So as I understand it, it is a change, but not with any real business effects unless one of the parties had incorrect taxes before... Which would mean that this party before was subsidised by other taxpayers.

yayr··on “This is absolutely related to Twitter not paying their Google Cloud bills”
rate limiting twitter app usage to a point where regular users are not using the app anymore should be directly cutting advertising revenue
yayr··on BlockSuite: An open-source Notion-like editor with multiplayer support
I wish it had a "markdown mode". E.g. where the features of the editor are flagged as markdown compatible and only those features would be enabled. It would then open markdown files and save back to markdown files
yayr··on Nvidia's next DGX supercomputer is all about generative AI
here is another interesting link explaining the reference architecture across 256 nodes and 24 racks:

yayr··on Show HN: I created a game to memorize the fretboard
interesting game. I like the old Rocksmith 2014 remastered game a lot to learn guitar. It also has some mini games inside, e.g. scale racer and other stuff. The main drawback of that one is that the note names are not really shown so you don't memorize it and have to actively do it yourself.

anyway, maybe you find some inspiration from that game...

yayr··on The bill of materials for the Apple headset leaked
sure, there are already models that allow you to hallucinate a full 3D scene from a single image. Still, it would be pretty cheap to add that camera I assume and it would have the potential to pretty quickly fix the 3D content issue that is prevalent currently without introducing hallucination artifacts.
yayr··on The bill of materials for the Apple headset leaked
I am wondering when Apple will start putting a second camera onto iPhones with proper pupil distance, so people can start taking 3D photos and videos in landscape format. That would be a real "whole family" use case...

Some years ago I made 3D photos of a wedding with a physical dual camera setup. That was quite a pain to get exposure etc. synchronized and postprocessed. Still the pictures look amazing on a quest. Nowadays this could all be super easy.

yayr··on Apple’s new headset meets reality
now that is an interesting thought, they would be more powerful than current MBPs... Screen Mirroring can already be done from MacOS to iPadOS for example. It would be super awesome if one could connect the headset to another Mac and use the screens / keyboard / touchpad of that device. Ideally it would allow virtual desktops to have quick access to both devices by simply swiping on the touchpad.
yayr··on Apple’s new headset meets reality
but at the time the market was different and the product at the time was an improvement over single purpose game toys by allowing changing games. Totally different story. Of course there is a low price market for lower resolution and compute... But there is a reason that retina displays on all device types are a thing too, usually at higher price points, at least initially. And economies of scale, manufacturing hardware depreciation etc. will bring these devices also to lower price points sooner or later.
yayr··on Apple’s new headset meets reality
Let's see. Unreal Engine can build for Apple Silicon. So any game dev can make his choice himself. Unity and others are also there as good frameworks.

More importantly, Apple did not ruin relationsships with Media companies. I'd love to see some more VR concerts or other events. Meta totally failed at scaling this.

yayr··on Apple’s new headset meets reality
it is something different if your screen is only a few square centimeters or if you are in a virtual environment. At least I do not agree to your point of view. For example running something like MS Flight Sim with decent realistic visuals is absolutely impossible, forget any other sims that require high quality characters, nature or anything else with a high polygon count or AI rendering
yayr··on ChatGPT app for iOS
it seems to be not available in all countries yet. Can't find it in the German app store.
yayr··on Apple’s new headset meets reality
I think with respect to compute/GPU capability the Apple headset will be vastly superior. One of the major issues with the Quest is the lack of graphics quality that can be brought to the virtual environments. Unless you run it via Link to a PC with a top end GPU it is just a toy. Having VR experiences like the recent Unreal Engine provides is simply orders of magnitude away for Quest in the current state... Thats one major reason that this thing does not take off for FB
yayr··on Ask HN: 1Password is backing out of the lifetime license I bought. Can I sue?
Alternatively, you can consider switching to a keepass compatible app. To be completely independent you could save your key file encrypted on a cloud folder (e.g. icloud, onedrive,...) and use any of the available keepass compatible clients on your devices while still having everything in sync.
yayr··on Apple brings Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad
I think I have seen that some users connect AVB capable devices (e.g. from Presonus or Motu) to the USB port of iPads and got full connectivity to the other studio setup via AVB networking. Some AVB devices are quite affordably nowadays. That would also allow for great audio routing setups in a gig I assume
