yatsyk··on Impressive JPEG Recompression
I've successfully converted 99% quality image which became 4.4 times smaller in size (identify shows 72% quality) after that I've converted same original image to 72% quality with imagemagick and I've got similar compression. Artifacts are look similar to jpegmini algorithm.

More interesting would be blind comparison experiment with with imagemagick compressed images with similar compression ratio. I'd be surprised if they could get 25-50% better compression with similar quality images.

I'd be very interested to look at live editing of experienced vim hacker to steal some tips.
yatsyk··on No Server Required - Jekyll & Amazon S3
At least one customer had issues removing data without court order. So in order to satisfy your 99.9999999% estimation amazon should have at least 1B S3 customers which is way to optimistic.

yatsyk··on The Hot/Crazy Solid State Drive Scale
1. You can backup entire partition

2. Restoring of Windows machine with lot of software very annoying and takes a lot of time (clicking dumb "I agree", and reboot the computer now, entering serials etc...) but with ubuntu or os x it's less annoying experience. Good package manager calculate dependencies for software. The only exception is when you need to install some proprietary software (less frequently than on windows) or you need edge version.

and notify everyone who could potentially call me about my new phone number... I do sometimes but it's far from optimal solution
yatsyk··on Why we need an Open Wireless movement
1G costs about $30K if I decide to use my phone in other country, so I'd say that reports about cheap 3G is greatly exaggerated

yatsyk··on Goliath: Non-blocking, Ruby 1.9 Web Server
Very timely release: I'm creating facade to other http API. Something like the sample in the article. I faced problem with slow responses from other party so I need to move to async request handling. Would you compare Goliath to EM HttpServer or other options?

yatsyk··on The ABCs of virtual private servers, Part 1: Why go virtual?
I've benchmarked filesystem with iozone tool and got more or less similar results for guest and host except "Pread" test where host is 20x times better then guest (my assumtion that this is a bug of virtualization software or misconfiguation from my side). I've performed test few times with same results.

My be I'm wrong but I don't understand where I could loose performance.

yatsyk··on The ABCs of virtual private servers, Part 1: Why go virtual?
All that work you did to make your IO sequential goes to waste as soon as you put it on a VPS

Why? You can run only one VM inside each hyprervisor. Or you can run only one IO intensive guest.

I hardly see any reasons to run my servers on hardvare instead of VMs in 2011.

There is also GitHub's gollum [1] . It's also uses git as storage. Gollum supports a lot of formats for page content and some of these formats have a good support in Vim.

yatsyk··on IcedRobot to run Android apps on OpenJDK
It would be nice to try android application in desktop browser before buying. With this project I believe it would be not so hard to create applet (or how they are called in 2011) for browser and show some features of your android application without installing to device.
yatsyk··on Nokia Confirms Microsoft Partnership, New Leadership Team
Not so smart move for Nokia, but this move could be good for WP7. With Nokia MS could get some market share. But for Nokia it's dumb. They are betting on not so feature rich platform with very small market share, with small (comparing to competitors) number of third party applications. And what it worst this is closed platform controlled by other company.

Why not fork Android?

yatsyk··on Office comparison: 37signals vs Zappos
Zappos workspace is bad from programmer point of view. Open space with lot of crap, phones on tables. May be this workspace is good for communication, someone could feel more happy in this workspace and so on but it's terrible for hacking. It looks like this envirement encourage interraptions. 37s office much better for productive work.

yatsyk··on using GAE and DryDrop to host static sites for free
> you have a public repo, you don't want to pay for CNAME support on GitHub and you are obsessed with the idea of running your site on GAE :-)

You don't need to pay anything for CNAME support now. It was not true previously but now only "obsessed with the idea of running your site on GAE" reason remains.

yatsyk··on using GAE and DryDrop to host static sites for free
[deleted] wrong thread
yatsyk··on using GAE and DryDrop to host static sites for free
Application will be unloaded from memory for sure but to serve static file you don't need to initialize app (i.e. load jar file into memory and start it or parse python source), you just need to serve static file. So start-up time could be much better. It is interesting to know about actual experience on GAE for static files hosting.

According to GH pages performance is great.

yatsyk··on using GAE and DryDrop to host static sites for free
GitHub pages[1] is other great option for static site hosting. You are pushing to github repo and your site is regenerating. Jekyll [2] is used as static site generator. I'm using GH Pages for HNresources.com hosting. If I need quickly update site I could change source page on project page on github.com site without even using git.

One question according to GAE hosting: If your application wasn't requested for some time it is unloaded from memory and first request after that require more time. Is it still apply to static sites?

yatsyk··on The Widescreen Laptop Conspiracy
Completely agree with this article. Wide-screen of same diagonal is cheaper to produce. May be situation could be better if we measure screen in megapixels or useful area.

I've never watched any movie on my laptop. I don't need additional distractive windows with documentation, browser or sidebars. But now with different toolbars working area is very narrow.

May be one of the reason why sales of windows and android tablets so bad because all of them use widescreen but iPAD is not widescreen and has quite good screen with large useful area.

I believe that there is a market for laptops with high-DPI IPS non-glossy screens for professionals (not only developers).

yatsyk··on Car theft by relaying signals from wireless keys
Car thieves of the future might be able to get into a car and drive away without forced entry and without needing a physical key, according to new research that will be presented at the Network and Distributed System Security Symposium next month in San Diego, California.

Sadly but this future already is in Russia for a long time. This google translated article [1] from 2006 is about different code-grabbers. There is different car insurance price depending do you have additional not so easy breakable wireless alarm installed.
