yarper··on Ask HN: What industries are underserved by software?
Who knows. Most carriers fly the same aircraft from the same bases on the same routes with the same regulations. It's not because I know what it is, it's just one of the few areas with any scope to be a differentiator.
yarper··on Ask HN: What industries are underserved by software?
It's a slang term for paperwork, it means a mechanic with dirty hands had to sign something.
yarper··on Ask HN: What industries are underserved by software?
That's great to hear, been a while since I've been in the sector. As for breaking into it via a SaaS, it makes sense that they would build it themselves. Seems like operators all do the same thing but differently.
yarper··on Ask HN: What industries are underserved by software?
If you know aviation, literally anything that will decrease fuel usage. Also maintenance & repair operations (a whole lot of dirty fingerprints going on there).
yarper··on UK Surveillance Regime Violated Human Rights
Both parties in the UK are broadly pro surveillance, and since it's FPTP you're damned if you do, or don't.

Can anyone work out what platforms it works on? .net core?
yarper··on Software development requires servant leaders
I think that's describing no leadership rather than a variety of it, but yeah most leaders suck, especially in software
yarper··on Software development requires servant leaders
Software engineering can be reduced to math too, for example functional programming is a lambda calculus derivative. I think it's basically just that we're so close to programming that it's hard to see it for what it is, just a bunch of rules and equations.
yarper··on How my role as CTO has changed as we've grown from 1 to 100 engineers
I realise it might be shocking to hear but it's genuine and meant sincerely, I think you're probably making a mistake and because you are cto are not being picked up on it

Why don't they know what's important and what's not?
yarper··on How my role as CTO has changed as we've grown from 1 to 100 engineers
I think it's because it implies that their job is to report to you -like you're really the brains of the operation rather than just in a different role
yarper··on How my role as CTO has changed as we've grown from 1 to 100 engineers
Giving up coding is what you do for your team, so they don't have to deal with the half finished B grade work you did inbetween doing the serious shit they can't do
yarper··on How my role as CTO has changed as we've grown from 1 to 100 engineers
At what point do you start calling people direct reports? I find this turn of phrase really jarring
yarper··on How my role as CTO has changed as we've grown from 1 to 100 engineers
That is not a weakness, that is life

edit: this is a star trek reference

yarper··on The Full 10-Page Anti-Diversity Screed Circulating Internally at Google
It's a pretty drastic oversimplification to say "women have better people skills" but there are definitely personality differences between men and women [1]. (I don't know why this comes as a surprise to anyone)

yarper··on Apple’s refusal to support Progressive Web Apps is a detriment to the web
That view is hugely annoying, even when you group unread and read, both are paginated separately. Perhaps there's some configuration I need to set..
yarper··on Theresa May says the internet must now be regulated after London terror attack
In the Tony Martin case, since he shot them in the back it wasn't ruled self defence.
yarper··on Theresa May says the internet must now be regulated after London terror attack
Actually the right to a jury isn't absolute [0], you can also be compelled to divulge encryption keys using a two year jail sentence [1] (no right to silence there).

Self defence is still as you say, completely legal.

yarper··on Theresa May says the internet must now be regulated after London terror attack
It's unlikely we could have more strict laws on knives in the UK. It's illegal to carry them and illegal to own many types of them (e.g. flick-knives).

Essentially if you have a knife on your person, and you've not got a damn good reason (e.g. it's a breadknife and you're on your way to work at a bakery) you're committing a crime.

Cars are basically impossible to legislate against. What they did is already illegal.

So to answer your question - what's left when everything is already illegal?

yarper··on Theresa May says the internet must now be regulated after London terror attack
This is the party that is also open about wanting to ban encryption.

yarper··on Scottish Parliament Backs Independence Vote and Defies U.K
In fact it's a lot more complex than that even. The fact that Scotland has a devolved govt. where England does not means that Scottish MPs can vote on English only issues but English MPs cannot vote on devolved Scottish matters [1].

The lopsided nature is in part because Scotland has a population of less than London (alone) and other areas of England such as Yorkshire would probably qualify for devolution based on their population (pretty much the same as Scotland).

The whole issue is highly politicized by all sides.
