If you're an indie hacker, or solo founder taxes are extremely important and you cannot ignore them if you go over a certain amount.
In the past taxes, VAT and all of that is a pain in the backside for most EU / UK businesses and most go with Paddle because of this.
I am so elated that this is now available (although through an invite), and saves a TON of time, unnecessary annoying scripts and duck tape.
Downvoters: So you can manage taxes and VAT for each different EU member state yourself manually? Is this some sort of side hobby for you? This is a real problem of many businesses.
you're talking as if bitcoin and ethereum is all of cryptocurrency.
Extremely naive claim.
What data do you think is included in their traces/metrics/logging with this telemetry tool? Do you know more of this?
You should know that a single blogpost doesn't tell you the entire story. What data are they collecting with this? Are these metrics/traces/data transparent? if not, why has GitHub not made this transparent?
Again, Am I able to "opt-out" of this telemetry on GitHub?
If I cannot, then they are spying. pure and simple.
It's quite simple. You don't know what Github is doing privately with this tool running in their backend systems.
I still don't understand the praise and the excitement of telemetry (open or not) at all from engineers.
They may think that they are doing this 'tracing' or whatever that is, when in-fact it is still spying.
Again, can I opt-out of this 'telemetry' on GitHub? If I cannot and I did not agree to this, then this is very troublesome.
In a closed source backend system like GitHub (Microsoft) how do you exactly know that this tool is also being used for spyware?
I wouldn't be surprised if this 'OpenTelemetry' system is being used for exactly that.
> which puts into question the "after reading this"
> without even checking what the article is talking about will do that.
please don't do that, this is against the HN guidelines.
> I haven't heard of a single case of them being used for user tracking or behavioral analytics.
and then you said:
> That we will start to see the potential to harvest these records for analytics…
So this can be used to gather analytics of any sort of data, such as spying then? This is still worrisome.
As far as I know, Chargebee, Recurly and Chargify does authentication and calculates VAT Taxes all for you with only their APIs.
> One of my point I'm trying to make is that everyone seems to be duct-taping services like this together.
It is Stripe Billing that you have to do all the duct-taping. Most people (in the EU) start on Stripe and end up at Paddle. Even then for (EU and US Stripe customers) the duct-taping still goes on with authentication.
God help you with VAT and Stripe in the EU, it's a nightmare, and not to mention when your customers ask you if you accept Paypal, and you have to implement that too.
Rather go with a subscription engine for a SaaS that is built for this service than rely solely on a payment gateway alone like Stripe.
So then this has to be fake then, obviously. Apparently George Hotz (geohot/tomcr00se) won a few CTFs single handedly [0][1].
I'm sure that marcan is also genius as well, unfortunately though Hotz is somehow still able to stay relevant, continuously.

Lots of companies Stripe has replaced because of this. I can see new areas of businesses being launched because of how easy Stripe has made it to be paid online, all with no-code!
No more third parties or complex developer integrations or a cut, only get paid with a link with Stripe, That's it!
I welcome this!
nobody on youtube does or would ever do this.
perhaps one can make a service that does this for them.
Not everyone wants to have to share everything that is useless with the world especially if it's only going to be you.
I also don't want people to have to bug me for feature requests as well on top of that.
There is a reason GitHub/Lab/Bitbucket has private repos for this purpose.
You can obviously choose to share it, but you shouldn't be whining if your 'useless' hobby repository suddenly becomes the focus of attention of developers requesting more features.
One can build a subscription saas business on these platforms alone.
works well and you can self host it you should try it!
you're right, most of these 'unpolished' projects can go on gitlab, bitbucket or another git hosting solution instead.
make the repo private or close contributions then?
if it's going to be useless and only be used by yourself, you might as well blog about it and move onto the next useless project.
hell, there may be no need to place it on github for these sort of projects.
nowadays postgres in the cloud does all of this for you.
Is that still the case?
Also where does one host Elixir apps these days? Heroku, Vercel or Bare metal?
End result was more technical debt then they ever wanted to know, advised them to tackle it upfront, they insisted that users "wouldn't find this sort of edge case when we launch".
How wrong these clients were.
It's easier to use Medium / Wordpress rather than your own glue + ducktape Hugo/Jekyll/Static etc blog.
