yann63··on The Quest to Make a Super Tomato
I grow my own tomatoes since several years, they taste great. I got seeds from friends, kept it from good tasting tomatoes, etc. Some were not good enough, I stopped growing them. I now have a selection of less than 10 varieties, which are just fabulous:

  * Small size ones: cerise rouge (red cherry), poire jaune (yellow pear), prune noire (black plum).

  * Medium size: Rose de Berne, Noire de Crimée

  * Big size: Coeur de Boeuf (beef heart).
I can send seeds in exchange of other seeds (other plants) or PP cost.

Here's how I harvest and store them: (article in French, but with many photos):

yann63··on Google Has Started Penalizing Mobile Websites with Intrusive Pop-Up Ads
Milk? That's funny. Here in France, it's drinks and wine ;-) But most of the milk sold here is pasteurized, so not kept in fridge (only once opened).
yann63··on Startup Puts Everything You Need for a Two-Acre Farm in a Shipping Container
There's a gardeners society here (Les Jardiniers de France) which sells a set of packets of seeds which are said to be able to grow on 200m2 and feed a family of 4 people.
yann63··on Inspiring Young Writers with Minecraft
From the article: an 8 year old kid, Stroud, wrote a book about Minecraft.

okay.

Question is now: is it because of Minecraft that this kid "became a writer", or was it just the starting element? If the kid had been fond of frogs, rocks or knitting, would he gave wrote a book just as well?

If you take any random kid playing Minecraft, could you turn it into a writer like described in the article?

I think that the kid was a born writer, or is in the correct environment, but crediting Minecraft for this is not correct.

yann63··on Linux Market Share on Desktop
Maybe windows users are abandonning their PC faster than Linux users? They are switching to tablets and smartphones. So in percentage, the increase of Linux market share for desktop could just be a decrease of windows (and Mac OS X).
yann63··on Adding a phone number to your Google account can make it less secure
> it's much harder to not use your OS than Google or FB

I think the exact opposite. Using Linux instead of windows 10 is easy. But not using any google service can be pretty difficult. Good news, there are some initiative to "ungoogle" the internet, such as Framasoft.

yann63··on Adblock Plus now sells ads
> They really think that shouting red stuff at my face will make me spend time and money ?

Actually, yes, they do. And it scares me that they may be right. Ads are toxic. Why don't we ban them? I've yet to hear a sensible argument to keep ads.

This is because most apps designers want you to spend time in their apps. Instead they should focus do design for time well spent: http://timewellspent.io/

yann63··on When Is the Singularity? Probably Not in Your Lifetime
This is called the "trolley problem". Here's a good read about that: https://backchannel.com/reinventing-the-trolley-problem-85f3... TLDR: such a scenario will NOT happen. A computer is not likely at all to find itself in such a situation. My opinion: study of such scenario is there just to give more confidence into self driving cars. Just to show people "See? We thought hard about this. Trust autonomous vehicules".
