yankoff··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
I have both of your books: math&physics and linear algebra. Keep up a great job!
yankoff··on Programming and Depression (2012)
I got a friend of mine who is a very good guitar player, with classical musical education and very sophisticated musical taste. He used to complain that although it is easy to impress general public with your guitar skills, but they will be equally impressed by something much simpler. Like a guy playing a 3-chord pop song. If you have no musical education, if you don't really understand the structure of music and how it's composed it'll be hard for you to fully appreciate it. And those who do understand, professional musicians, will often criticize it just like, you say, programmers on a github will criticize your code. It happens in any professional area and absolutely normal.

I think the problem is that you are looking primarily for extrinsic motivators. Of course it's an important part and it's hard to exclude them at all, but you gotta have something more then that. There should be an interest in doing things just because you like doing them and you _interested_ in them even if you couldn't share it with anyone else.

yankoff··on Ask HN: What's the worst you've ever screwed up at work?
Man, for some reason that double 'ls' made me laugh for 5 minutes. Just tried to imagine the surprised look on your face.
yankoff··on Project Euler
Project Euler is great. Another one, but more algorithm and CS oriented: hackerrank.com
yankoff··on Project Euler
It also was added just recently (relatively). So not necessarily it's the hardest one.
yankoff··on Never Going Back - A Week of Not Eating Lunch at My Desk
It blows my mind that someone had enough motivation to write a big post on just why eating at desk is bad.
yankoff··on DEFCONBOTS - An Autonomous Robotics Competition at DEFCON
Awesome! That goes really well with the upcoming course on Controlling Mobile Robots I was gonna take https://www.coursera.org/course/conrob
yankoff··on The spiral of learning
Yes, I (and many others) have exactly same problem. I feel like I'm getting better in committing to specific goals over time though.

One of the key things here is to think about what you want and clearly define your goals. But you may find yourself in the situation when it's hard to understand what you want. Then, I think, it's ok to play around with small projects shorterm without strict commitment. This helps to try many different things and finally find what you like.

yankoff··on Uber now has to wait 15 minutes before picking you up in France
> a regulated industry cannot compete with an unregulated one, but people are still better off with the regulated one.

Can you please give one example?

yankoff··on What book has inspired you the most?
Oh, it's a shame this post didn't go on the top :(
yankoff··on Build an algorithm to predict friendships, then actually use it to meet people
Why you guys didn't want to run this competition on Kaggle? That could get it more attention from data scientists.
yankoff··on Winamp shutting down on December 20th, 2013
Why shutting down and not open-source?
yankoff··on The first Bitcoin post on HN
And your claim, of course, is not based on any evidence.
yankoff··on Ghost Launches to The Public
How people find energy to create yet another blogging platform.
yankoff··on Bertrand Russell: In Praise of Idleness (1932)
I wonder how much Mr. Russel was idle himself having written on average 2 books per year throughout his life and significantly contributing on so many levels.
yankoff··on Why I am working on Artificial General Intelligence
Have you developed a specific plan to tackle this problem? ;)
yankoff··on Create an algorithm to distinguish dogs from cats
Have been playing with their contests since I finished ML course on coursera. I think they worth it, pretty fun and addictive, plus a very good way to practice your machine learning/data mining skills. Community there is very good and helpful.
yankoff··on Alfred 2 Workflows
is there anything similar for ubuntu?
yankoff··on An algorithm for generating automatic hashtags
Cool stuff. I have been playing with nltk and gensim myself recently in order to solve similar problem. But I want to combine unsupervised topic modeling (LDA) with some supervised learning algorithm (probably naive bayes). Struggling with LDA at this point, but pretty interesting stuff.
yankoff··on Passive Income Hacker vs Startup Guy
There's also an opposite extreme. Some people think that spending time on your work (company, project) should take not more than 5-10% of your time, the rest you should spend hiking, traveling, singing or whatever else that doesn't have to do with tech. It seems that for such people tech is not the main area of interests and they can't understand that things can be different for other people.
yankoff··on Passive Income Hacker vs Startup Guy
Exactly. Some people keep promoting the "virtue" of having a passive income and being able to not work at all. It seems to me that they can't wrap their heads around the idea that some actually enjoying working on their projects every day, building something and improving from day to day.
yankoff··on How Nancy Pelosi Saved the NSA Surveillance Program
.. and there's a street in SF named after her: Nancy Pelosi Dr.
yankoff··on Stop Glorifying Hard Work and Long Hours
I see glorifying of short hours way more often here.
yankoff··on San Francisco, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down
He said he was a complete noob in 2009, and in 2011 he cofounded a company with two very famous people in Ruby community. How?
yankoff··on Edward Snowden: the whistleblower behind revelations of NSA surveillance
Some things I still can't understand.

* How the hell they are able to store all this data? * How they are able to search through it?

yankoff··on A New Book: Building Machine Learning Systems with Python
Taking this course right now. Awesome.
yankoff··on Statistical Formulas For Programmers
Yeah, I meant something for computer scientists. I'm going over coursera ML course currently and wanted to learn at least basics of statistics in parallel.

Thanks, I'll check out your links.

Btw, what do you think of OpenIntro statistics?http://www.openintro.org/stat/down/OpenIntroStatSecond.pdf

yankoff··on Statistical Formulas For Programmers
While you guys are here, can you recommend a good intro book for statistics?
yankoff··on Andrew Ng and the Quest for the New AI
Great and inspiring professor. Taking his ML course on coursera and trying to follow his talks.
yankoff··on Hacking Redis: Adding Interval Sets
Very cool. Did you guys consider achieving the same functionality with Lua scripting that Redis 2.6 supports? I wonder what are the tradeoffs and if that was much slower.
