yanivs··on Numbers That Explain Why Facebook Acquired WhatsApp
Whatsapp is great and the numbers speak for themselves, but I think that promoting the $0 marketing spend brings a wrong notion to consumer facing startups. Usually it's ok to spend here and there to get your initial user base or to learn about your product/market fit. Otherwise you're just relying on blind luck.
yanivs··on Lost Images Come To Life A Century After Antarctic Expedition
there's a great book about this expedition - a must read!

yanivs··on Should You Build for iOS or Android? Discover What 7 Mobile App Experts Say
Android development is a pain in the ass.

App Store app management (approval, updates, etc.) is a pain in the ass.

If you're building a social app then nowadays you almost MUST have both iOS & Android out of the box otherwise you're hurting any potential network effect.

yanivs··on What happened when my co-founder quit the night before our YC interview
Yes, obviously you need to be smart to play chess. But on the professional level they are all very smart and capable people. So it's not only about being smart but also understanding who you're facing and how you can crash his mind.
yanivs··on What happened when my co-founder quit the night before our YC interview
Actually I did and still am. And I have a 9 years old kid studying & playing 4 times a week. I also met a few professional chess players in my life and talked to them about chess.
yanivs··on What happened when my co-founder quit the night before our YC interview
Great story! btw - chess is a lot more about confidence & psychology than purely intellectual
yanivs··on Show HN: Single Page Websites using Webbify
The title is misleading - instead of showing examples of websites using Webbify you're requiring us to login with Facebook without understanding why and what exactly will we get out of it.

You should show some live examples and add a non facebook way to login (even better, require login only after the user has set his first website and just before he needs to save it)

yanivs··on Why Twitter's IPO is Bad for Startups
actually Path is valued at $250m

yanivs··on Don't Ask for Money - Ask for Advice
it's true but you also need to be careful from the "friendly-but-not-investing-angel" syndrome. This guy becomes someone who gives you good advices and connects you to other angels, but since you're so much fixed in his mind on the "help-me-I'm-clueless" position, he will never invest, and it will send a bad signal to his fellow angels. so, do ask for advice, but don't make yourself look too desperate and unconfident.
yanivs··on Show HN: How much can you tell about someone from their tweets?
How much? apparently not too much from the account I've tested
yanivs··on Show HN: Open-sourcing my rejected iOS app, In-Stock
Well, if you think there's a demand for it just do a mobile html version. It's not a super complicated app to implement with html.
yanivs··on Introducing Google Helpouts
Looks good but just not something that fits Google's DNA. A smaller & hungrier startup could have been a better place for this kind of marketplace
yanivs··on How StatusPage.io Built Their MVP
really nice job. simple, affordable and needed solution.
yanivs··on Few successful entrepreneurs blog
One of the most important roles of a CEO is to tell a good story, so writing is an excellent way to practice that and you don't need to write about things that will benefit your competitors.
yanivs··on Ask HN: how do cold calls/emails work for you?
many times it gave me surprising (good) results...even when I cold emailed some "hot shots" (Guy Kawasaki, Fred Wilson, etc.)

Here's a great post I found by a seasoned entrepreneur about this: http://www.startupmoon.com/how-i-got-meetings-at-twitter-lin...

I also wrote about my experiences with cold emails: http://blog.jhaniv.com/cold-mails-to-hot-people

yanivs··on NBA Superstar Chris Bosh: Here’s Why You Should Learn to Code
He's a good man - not the best basketball player in the world maybe but a good man :)
yanivs··on Netflix no longer issuing new API keys
the roku box came out of Netflix - I won't be surprised if they still have stakes there.

it's more about keeping their data for themselves, sharing is caring and they just don't :)

yanivs··on PlaceIt by Breezi - Generate Product Screenshots in Realistic Environments
very cool I would add rotated iPhone (Landscape) scenes to the mix
