yamellasmallela··on Ask HN: Where is my server-side rendering?
Django uses a modern language and is simple

Rails is not sanely organized, very complicated, and ruby is just a crazy language

yamellasmallela··on Dear EU: Please Don't Ruin the Root
BGP needs a complete overhaul. Every once and a while all the internet traffic "accidentally" gets routed to china due to a "technical mistake"

mhmm. Blacklist them.

yamellasmallela··on Writing books is not really a good idea
I am planning on writing a book but only to say I did for my professional career. Money from it would be nice but its ultimately just an investment into furthering my main source of income. People really trust your opinion on something if you say you literally wrote the book on it... for some reason.
yamellasmallela··on Ask HN: Where is my server-side rendering?
Django templates will be your fastest option

Rails and PHP are a nightmare and legacy. Don't even bother

Next.js is pretty good

yamellasmallela··on Ask HN: Best container runtime for process isolation / security?
firecracker is probably what you need that literally runs lambda

gvisor is also good for pure container runtimes

yamellasmallela··on Startup Growth Calculator (2014)
Looks like it encodes the positions as base64 in the url? Seems pretty dumb to do it like that. Freezes for me also
yamellasmallela··on The global chip shortage is starting to have consequences
Driving would be pretty damn safe if every single car stopped being an enormous truck or SUV. 99% of the population does not need one. American roads are just so damn unsafe
yamellasmallela··on Amazon Fake Reviews Scam Exposed in Data Breach
I hardly buy anything from Amazon anymore except for things I know are chinese garbage or small things like toothpaste. I don't trust that namebrand items are authentic at all and you shouldn't either.
yamellasmallela··on Chrome extension recommends local businesses while shopping on Amazon or eBay
Would love this on safari
yamellasmallela··on A Hybrid Approach to Work
If you don't get promotions you lose certain stock grants which greatly reduces your pay

The entire system is a scam and built specifically to keep you at google and drinking the kool aid

yamellasmallela··on A Hybrid Approach to Work
This is really stupid. Most people do not need to be in an office to get work done. Google, and all these other tech companies, made record profits this year.

I just don't get why they insist on keeping people in a seat? At least for google, offering all these on-site only perks is just a scheme to keep employees at work for as long as possible.

yamellasmallela··on On incels, dead bedrooms and the hard problems of loneliness
I agree but this is only applicable to incels who are "ugly". Some people are incels because they have no "game" and that is hard to fix.

Also, not everyone can just get a nose job and be attractive magically.

I think many people in the incel community don't understand how far showering, dressing well, and working out will get them. Its much better than complaining without any action. Also, I see many of them complaining about not dating "10s" yet never bother to look at people at their level.

yamellasmallela··on On incels, dead bedrooms and the hard problems of loneliness
Isn't sex work peak feminism? Women choosing what to do with their bodies and also earning a living?
yamellasmallela··on On incels, dead bedrooms and the hard problems of loneliness
People who use "equity" really do mean equality of outcome, and that is a huge problem.

Equality of outcome is undeniably evil.

yamellasmallela··on Why Working from Home Will Stick
That seems so economical and honestly if you can pull that off with a FAANG salary, you are so set. Sometimes I wish I could do that. If you work at Google, the van would pretty much be for sleeping. Only thing I would worry about is a late night break in.
yamellasmallela··on Ask HN: Why are all the submissions about Bill/Melinda Gates being killed?
Because its celebrity news and people really shouldn't care at all
yamellasmallela··on Why Working from Home Will Stick
>Honest question: at that point why not move closer to work?

Because everyone thinks this first which is why a 1 bedroom in SF is like 5k a month.

yamellasmallela··on ShellCheck: Finds bugs in your shell scripts
because its 2021 and we should get over compatibility with archaic tech?
yamellasmallela··on ShellCheck: Finds bugs in your shell scripts
ShellCheck is absolutely essential. Make sure to get the vscode plugin as well. I love it.

The error code can be googled and it the first result will be exactly what you need. One of the best projects to happen to open source.

yamellasmallela··on How ayahuasca changed my perspective
Its based on a lot of stuff. My experiences, my friends experiences, the scientific literature.

I get that everyone loves to say that ketamine and mushrooms are so magical but if you read into these studies they urge extreme caution. The patients need to be careful screened (never mind that study participants self select from previous drug use), the dosages are exact, and they are monitored by professionals. Plus, there is 0 evidence that ketamine helps long term and a TON of evidence it causes severe addiction and withdrawal

Point is, illicit drugs are not some magical thing that will solve your problems. In fact, they will make your life a hell of a lot worse the majority of the time.

yamellasmallela··on Putting the fear of AirPlay into Yamaha YAS-207 soundbar
Just because it has alexa/google integration doesn't mean you HAVE to use it. You have full control over what it talks to and in theory you can restrict which domains it can talk to if you wanted.
yamellasmallela··on Ask HN: Does Google still uses Kubernetes? If not then what are they using?
They use Borg for almost everything which is mind boggling. They don't dog food pretty much anything which is probably why their products are so shitty.
yamellasmallela··on Ask HN: Basic Tools for a Small Company
Why not gsuite? It has everything you need... you can use trello free tier for tasks too. Slack free tier will be enough as well.

If you want happy employees, stay far, far away from microsoft products. NO ONE likes teams.

yamellasmallela··on How ayahuasca changed my perspective
"How drugs messed up my brain and made me see god"

Man this drug normalization needs to stop. Drugs can permanently fuck you up. It's just not worth it.

yamellasmallela··on Ask HN: What are some thought-terminating clichés in the software industry?
Lets make a spike for this

I swear to god if I hear one more "agile" buzzword from some washed out PM who has no reason to be employed....

So glad I don't work in devops or SWE

yamellasmallela··on Ask HN: I have no idea how to network in tech. Any tips?
Networking usually carries the connotation of leeching imo. Most of the people who are interested in networking with me have nothing to offer me back. You probably actually want a mentor.

No one will really want to "network" unless you have some use to them too.

yamellasmallela··on Why haven't gamers united to take down Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies?
No one uses GPUs to mine bitcoin and soon Ethereum won't even use proof of work mining algorithms. Crypto isn't really causing the shortage of cards its a mix of scalpers intentionally buying every single GPU on the market for a profit and low supply due to the pandemic. It will straighten out soon enough.

Scalpers are the ones who should be targeted. Put your effort into organizing mass reporting, takedowns of their listings, fake bids, etc. There is a lot you can do.

yamellasmallela··on Ask HN: Is LinkedIn bringing you any value?
I only use it to show off professional things to get a better job one day. It serves as a clear historical record of my achievements. OSINT is nice too. Otherwise, not really.
yamellasmallela··on Designing a guitar with hot-swappable pickups
I will bet you $1000 that not a single person can reliably determinate which tone is from a real tube amp vs a solid state Axe Fx 3 in a blind A/B test. Why spend 6k on a real tube amp when you can have hundreds of physically modelled amps and pedals, not to mention all the effects and "fake" things you can do like modify internal circuits and stuff... makes no sense
yamellasmallela··on Ask HN: Pros and Cons of Switching from Linux to M1 MacBook
I used to use Arch with i3-gaps and then switched to mac. I also have an M1 air. Mac OS is way better to use than linux. Everything just works, security is built in, and it has commercial support.

I strongly recommend it especially if you have other apple devices because the ecosystem _just works_
