yakk0··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
I have a Vizio TV that was advertised as a Chromecast TV, and I got it because of that. It was HDMI and Chromecast only. A few years later they did a silent update that added apps and generally made the UI much slower. I mainly use it with an AppleTV or game consoles, but it still irks me that they completely changed what was in my mind a nearly perfect TV.
yakk0··on Half-Life 2 running natively on HaikuOS
looking forward to see Action Retro's shenanigans on YouTube with this.
yakk0··on Animated Knots
Knots 3D is also on iOS. It's great and I have used to help teach knots to Scouts quite a few times.
yakk0··on Gentoo Linux 2025 Review
I haven't used it in years, but when I was first using Linux I used Gentoo for a long time. Building Gentoo from scratch really helped me learn a lot and probably more quickly than dual-booting a system like I had been. I'll always have a soft spot for Gentoo.
yakk0··on Occasionally USPS sends me pictures of other people's mail
I have firstnamelastname@gmail.com and it surprises me how many other people have my same name. I get so much unintended mail, usually to firstname.lastname at gmail. I have found that in a lot of cases they have forgotten a middle initial. I usually let it go as spam unless it looks important like a credit card. What frustrates me is that these companies will not interface with me at all, sometimes not even leaving a note on the account.

I understand from the security side why they wont, but I wish there was something they could do. I could easily log in and change a password then cancel the account, but I figure there's probably some legal trouble if I did that.

yakk0··on Merlin Bird ID
Another parent in my kid's Cub Scout pack told me about this a few years ago. It's been really cool to use on camping trips, and lately I've been using it while walking the dog. There's a lot more different types of birds around me than I had realized.
yakk0··on Why we're helping more wikis move away from Fandom
It think it's been changed, but I believe the Transformers wiki on Fandom started out as a copy of the superior [TFWiki](https://tfwiki.net). TFWiki has been referenced by many official creators and Hasbro designers themselves and has proven to be a great resource. I have no idea what their infrastructure or backup plans are, but I dread the day they go down.
yakk0··on The fishy death of Red Lobster
Just like Toys 'R Us. Same playbook.
yakk0··on PfSense Software Embraces Change: A Strategic Migration to the Linux Kernel
their previous April Fools joke (https://www.netgate.com/blog/building-a-behemoth-router) actually said "Happy April Fool's Day" at the end. This doesn't. It's a poor attempt at a joke if it is one.
yakk0··on Windows CE's final day
I read almost all of the Lord of the Rings trilogy on a Windows Mobile phone in the 2000s. They were a great tool for the time, and I much preferred them to the Blackberrys that were more popular with many of my coworkers.
yakk0··on ChimeraOS: Instantly turn any PC into a gaming console
Tying into game streaming services would be nice. A low end PC can run Geforce Now or Gamepass more easily than some of these games.
yakk0··on Witch – macOS window switcher replacement
There are Mac users like myself that don't have a trackpad or touchpad. After trying the Magic Mouse when I got my Mini I reverted back to my 20 year old Microsoft optical mouse. I long for the Windows style of app switching where you can go through each window instead of the Mac style where you go through each app.
yakk0··on JFK Assassination Records – 2022 Additional Documents Release
Growing up in the 80s in the southern US we had earthquake drills and tornado drills. I feel lucky that those were the biggest threats I felt as a child.
yakk0··on Show HN: Podcast Audiograms – Make clips with captions, title and audio waves
Correct, but also with 1, there is a way to embed chapters into a mp3 file that's a part of the ID3 standard. We use Forecast (https://overcast.fm/forecast) to do it. I've found that most podcast applications either parse these chapters or timecodes in show notes (or support both), and that would be another way to identify moments that as a producer we've called out in the file.

for 2, the RSS feed would include show notes and greatly speed up the process for bulk production.

If you'd like to get in touch with me, I'm on twitter as @yakk0dotorg. thanks again!

yakk0··on Show HN: Podcast Audiograms – Make clips with captions, title and audio waves
Compared to other Audiogram tools I've used, this is really easy. Processing time is a bit long, but I did test it with a 2 hour podcast.

I have a couple feature suggestions that I think would be really helpful to podcast producers. Our show has mp3 chapters, and we also include matching time codes in our show notes. If you could read one (or both) of those you could suggest segments for users to clip out.

It would also be great if you could read a RSS feed and use that as an input in addition to uploading single files.

yakk0··on IoT hacking and rickrolling my high school district
That's funny, I worked for a school district about 10 years ago and our IT director was also the transportation director. He knew nothing about IT but I guess they had to give the role to someone at one point and it was him. I think I lasted 2 years before finding my current job.
yakk0··on Apple TV 4K Gets A12 Bionic
I dropped my remote the first night I had my Apple TV 4K and shattered the glass on it. Good riddance.
yakk0··on Tweeting “Memphis” autolocks your Twitter account
Ramses?
yakk0··on Tweeting “Memphis” autolocks your Twitter account
As a fan of the University of Memphis basketball team, this is not the weekend I'd like this to happen. Though with how our weekend is going maybe it's a good thing...
yakk0··on Dots don't matter in Gmail addresses
Same. The ones that surprise me are the credit card information or cell phone plans. I was able to contact the phone company and tell them to remove my address, but the credit card was an exercise in frustration. You can't get through without account or personal info. I just mark most of them as spam these days.
yakk0··on Optimal Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches
I've never thought to add the cinnamon and sugar, but I'm a big fan of the grilled version.
yakk0··on The History of Usenet and FidoNet
BlueWave was fantastic. I miss it too.
yakk0··on Homelab: Intel NUC with the ESXi Hypervisor
the Windows ESXi client has been EOL for a while now and is not supported by current versions. It's all managed through the web or the esxcli commands now.
yakk0··on Homelab: Intel NUC with the ESXi Hypervisor
just the ESXi hypervisor is free for non-production use.
yakk0··on History of Fidonet (1993)
Blue Wave was the first piece of shareware I registered. I still have the floppy.
yakk0··on Ask HN: How Would You or Did Convince Your Boss That You Can Work Remote?
My wife got a job a couple states away and while I loved my job, I was moving with her. My responsibilities had been moving into more server-admin stuff for a while, so my boss was able to get approval to let me work remotely. It's been 3 and a half years now and still working well. I miss the ability to drop in on people and bounce ideas off them, but we talk a lot through IMs and calls.
yakk0··on Show HN: Podflix – Like Netflix for Podcasts
The search is horrible. I searched for my podcast by keyword and by name, as well as some other podcasts I listen to and none came up even related to any of the shows I was looking for.
yakk0··on Synergy-core: Open source core of Synergy, the keyboard and mouse sharing tool
well that's not good. I use Synergy daily.
yakk0··on Microsoft Turned Consumers Against the Skype Brand
Teams does something much better than SfB. It keeps IMs in sync between clients and devices. If I reply to an IM on my phone in SfB it stays on my phone. There's no way to get that conversation history onto my desktop client. Teams acts like you would expect and all clients get all the history.
yakk0··on Permanent Daylight Saving Time? Florida Says Yes, but It’s Not So Simple
except this law would make DST the official time of Florida, not standard time (though only if Congress changes a law that allows states to do so). Other states like Arizona have exempted themselves from DST, which the federal government allows them to do.
