yakk0··on Permanent Daylight Saving Time? Florida Says Yes, but It’s Not So Simple
except this law would make DST the official time of Florida, not standard time (though only if Congress changes a law that allows states to do so). Other states like Arizona have exempted themselves from DST, which the federal government allows them to do.
yakk0··on DOSBox x86 system emulator
actually, it kinda is. FreeDOS has added a lot of nice features over the last few years. http://www.freedos.org/
yakk0··on VLC 3.0 release
Nice! I tried a 1080p mkv video on 2.2.8 before upgrading and it used around 8-9% CPU. After upgrading, played the same clip and it was under 1%. Nice performance increase there!
yakk0··on Replace Skype with Discord for Better Audio Quality and Web-Based Interviews
We've been using Discord for our podcast for a while now. At this point we're only using Skype for a short video portion of the show.
yakk0··on Replace Skype with Discord for Better Audio Quality and Web-Based Interviews
It's only in DMs as well. We record while letting our audience listen and because of that we can't use video.
yakk0··on TWiT is suing Twitter, alleging breach of contract and copyright infringement
What I hate (and it happened in the most recent SN) is when Steve explains something then Leo asks a question about the thing Steve just talked about. At least try and pay attention.
yakk0··on When Microsoft Plans to End Its Free Windows 10 Upgrade Offer
You don't even need to do the trick in this article. According to Paul Thurrott, you can still activate with a Windows 7 or 8.1 key: https://www.thurrott.com/windows/windows-10/142616/yes-can-s...
yakk0··on A look at my BBS Software from '93
Telix scripts were great! Easy to learn and useful, I had mine set up to automatically upload and download my QWK mail packets.
yakk0··on Testing the Windows Subsystem for Linux
it's the subsystem for running Linux. It's not actually Linux, and after enabling the subsystem you still have to actually get the Ubutntu image. That image is the Linux part.
yakk0··on Testing the Windows Subsystem for Linux
It takes a little work, but SuSE can work with WSL too: https://www.suse.com/communities/blog/make-windows-green-par...
yakk0··on Announcing GVFS: Git Virtual File System
I appreciated the Princess Bride reference with "repos of unusual size"
yakk0··on Curl author asks Microsoft to remove 'curl' and 'wget' aliases from PowerShell
get-alias will list all the aliases on your system.

The profile is here (at least in Windows 10, it might be in a different location in other versions): C:\Users\username\Documents\WindowsPowerShell\Microsoft.PowerShell_profile.ps1

yakk0··on Lonnie Johnson: The father of the Super Soaker
as a kid my favorite Super Soaker was the one that had a backpack as the reservoir. It was threaded just like a garden hose, so I would hook the gun up to the hose instead.
yakk0··on Open-sourcing Teletraan, a code deployment system
Nice name. If people don't get the reference, Teletraan was the name of a series of computers from the Transformers series: http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Teletraan_I_%28G1%29
yakk0··on OneDrive Changes
that's how I read it. I'm in the same boat.
yakk0··on Sherlock lives in public domain, US court rules
A good example is the Fleischer Superman cartoons. No one disputes that DC (and Warner Bros.) owns Superman, but these cartoons have all entered the public domain.
yakk0··on Michael Dell buys back PC company he founded in $24.8bn deal
It's not just their laptops. It's all Dell computers. When I started working in IT as a college student they were 5 digits, but I think they're all 7 digits now. I believe the service tag also brings up warranty information and the specs of the machine as ordered if you are logged in as an account with permissions (i.e. the one that ordered it).
yakk0··on Outlook.com now has IMAP
it just worked for me. I sent an e-mail from my gmail address via outlook.com to a separate address and it came through almost instantly. Have you checked your settings? They made the switch a while back to using Gmail's SMTP servers for those accounts.
yakk0··on Outlook.com now has IMAP
I believe that MS scans for malware, but Google also scans to provide context based advertising.
