xzel··on California community colleges rely too much on part-time faculty; misspend funds
> I really wish they’d allocate Covid-like money to R&D or prizes for solving various challenges like curing diseases, which would drive universities.

They already do via DARPA, NIH and medical patents. Making a drug and selling it is the prize for solving a challenge like curing diseases.

xzel··on Python is two languages now
I like to say something along the lines is “80% of all development should be really boring otherwise you didn’t do enough planning or you’re working on < 1 year old start up”. To me the real excitement isn’t from the code working it’s from a whole team making something that works because that is way more challenging.
xzel··on Apple's Popularity with Gen Z Poses Challenges for Android
Anecdotal evidence, I'm just about Gen Z and I know a lot of people in that generation who buy rep sneakers and designer clothes via reddit from China. Reps have gotten very, very good if you're willing to pay a little more than fast fashion prices. Grain of salt / YMMV but that's what I've seen in my circles.
xzel··on Meta to ask many managers to become individual contributors or leave
Individual contributor.
xzel··on Hans Niemann Suing Magnus Carlsen, Chess.com, and Hikaru Nakamura
Or just delay the live stream instead? There’s a whole lot of hyperbole in your comments. He definitely cheated in online play as chess.com and Hans himself has said. Don’t think there’s been any proof of OTB cheating so far and his OTB play seems to be pretty realistic at this point.
xzel··on Woman ‘dehumanised’ by viral TikTok filmed without her consent
I think most people would consider drug addiction a mental illness. If not it often is being used as a coping mechanism for mental illness or something else. Being able to empathize with people who are struggling is exactly what OP was talking about.
xzel··on ‘Wallets and eyeballs’: how eBay turned the internet into a marketplace
I take lots pictures before I ship. The products I largely sell also go through a third party service, but that’s a very recent addition to eBay. Otherwise, like every other business fraud is just a cost/side effect of doing business.
xzel··on ‘Wallets and eyeballs’: how eBay turned the internet into a marketplace
I'm a decently big ebay seller. There are a huge amount of scammers on the buy side. Lots of fake reputation. The reason why they largely side with the buyer is there are a lot of scam sellers as well. Traditionally, ebay has been a very weird market place, its coupling with PayPal for a long time, terrible customer support, huge amount of fraud (view botting, follow botting, fake reputation). It really was the jungle for a long while, imo. The past 2 years they've very slowly started modernization the website. It is still missing lots of features you'd expect as a seller but they've come a really long way in a short time.
xzel··on Enclave: An Unpickable Lock
The middle part is always what I tell people, yeah you locked the door but did you lock your window panes?
xzel··on WordPress’ market share is shrinking
After taking a stab into building with Gutenberg I'm incredibly bearish. Automatic has abandoned both of its customers, plugin/theme developers and non-technical website owners, due to, imo, huge amount of VC funding it took on. Gutenberg is at best, half baked and broken and at worst an ever changing API of compromises.

I'm trying to convince my partner to look into creating custom Shopify themes or plugins and possibly creating a full service consulting company.

xzel··on PHP RFC: Deprecate ${} string interpolation
This seems like a bit of an angry response. I write a lot of Wordpress and php code and help manage one of the most sold themes on theme forest. Php really was, in my opinion, a hell hole of a failed language until 6ish. The patterns people used as standard practice were 5-10 years out of date either due to the slow progress of WP or the php language and ecosystem. A lot of the flack PHP and Wordpress has gotten is totally deserved. Yeah it can just work, but at what cost? Maintenance and upgrading is terrible. Security vulnerabilities galore. You seem involved in WP but just work is a load of bullshit. Everytime we push an update people migrating are walking through a minefield: CSS overlaps, JS import overlaps, php bugs from other plugins. Going back, we can’t even use features from modern PHP because most of our users php versions aren’t well up to date.

Wordpress itself has done a terrible job halfbaking different systems as part of WP core. Gutenberg, imo, is just another abject failure that will take 5 years and provide a buggy solution. You are spot on with the compatibility argument which also has lots of pros and cons obviously.

Also for most js websites built at a certain time things weren’t using npm and bundles and you can simply link the js src like it’s 1999. Just save the source code and you never have to update.

I know this is a trope here but every job has the right tool. WP and php are great tools, especially PHP right now, it has literally never been better. WP on the other hand is just totally confused with Gutenberg and it’s clear Automatic has no idea what they’re doing and who their audience is.

xzel··on Google almost convinced me to spend $400 on useless laser treatments
I totally agree with you but I'm pretty sure you just described the Normal distribution. People need to stop putting certain occupations on a pedestal. I've had good doctors and bad doctors, largely the latter. Tbh, most doctors don't have the time to be good doctors, due to how most hospitals operate, so it's really tough to judge them fairly. Also to add I'm only discussing US hospitals I haven't had enough experience outside the US for any of this to be applicable outside of it. My small amount of experience with Drs in Tokyo and Prague were great.
xzel··on A YouTuber purposely crashed his plane in California, FAA says
I think a lot of older school Americans have a real justice boner and justice in their mind is often eye for an eye. At least this feels true about the older, right-leaning generation I know. Justice in the US, traditionally, seems a lot more punitive than rehabilitory. I think that has fizzled off in the more recent generation and some policy is already starting to reflect that, i.e. marijuana laws and releasing people for that crime early.

xzel··on As inflation soars, how is Arizona iced tea still 99 cents?
This is why the other poster got frustrated with you. The current watch market is a terrible example of supply and demand as a traditional model. Do you think S&D effectively models NFT marketplace? Because the watch market is a lot more like that, too complex to be models effectively by traditional S&D.

xzel··on Pro chefs debate cooking tips and tricks
Why would you use good/expensive olive oil to cook/fry with in the first place?

If you're not able to taste a difference when you're adding salt you might want to try a different size or type of salt. I have maybe 5 or 6 different granularities and types I use for difference times at home.

xzel··on So you want to study mathematics
Generally for stem test for application of material not memorization (Medicine you need both, etc). My lower level undergrad math courses all allowed us to bring a crib sheet with equations. It helps you go back over and study/relearn. In the graduate math / physics courses a crib sheet was provided and standardized. Memorizing final PDE solutions or things like Laplace Transform tables is no bueno.
xzel··on Scientist busts myths about how humans burn calories
With a 10 dollar scale and an App like Lose It, it is pretty easy. They have both things with UPC codes for easy look up and standard foods, for example brown rice or salmon. I keep track and probably spend less than 5 minutes a day getting everything down. Obviously it will be difficult at a restaurant unless you want to bring a scale with you or beg the wait staff but largely they won't mind and if you're order grilled chicken and veg most likely they won't mind measuring the chicken for you. Anyways, the stuff on labels are estimates so the whole process has some moderate error so as long as you estimate fairly you don't have to worry about being crazy accurate.
xzel··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
I remember seeing some of his earlier stuff before the modern info wars and its not exactly laid back but the production value was more of a radio show. Most people don't know but he played a raving conspiracist in A Scanner Darkly, but he basically became that charter on Info Wars. With some of the info from his ex-wife's interview, I think his public persona slowly started to take over his real identity as it grew.
xzel··on A Survey of Programmers' Cannabis Usage, Perception, and Motivation
11 pm - 2/3 am is the best time for me to get work done. Most people are asleep. News, slack/discord and emails aren't coming in. Hopefully the small tasks were already done earlier in the day, and the only thing left to do is focus. My only worry with this is that its just a cover for my procrastination.
xzel··on Lambda School leaked documents show poor performance over the last two years
In respect to Sea World the more realistic strategy is either run at a minor loss until the real estate is profitable or squeeze dry ASAP and sell. Or the timeless play of load it with debt, payout themselves and declare bankruptcy.

Of course there are other PE businesses that are ran with only minor changes. I have a friend whose firm invests in dermatology offices and has created a network of small offices nation wide. From my understanding they really do try to keep the same staff on and mostly do back office changes but that’s his word so take it for what it is. I personally find large scale PE work pretty soulless but there are definitely firms that care about the companies they take over.

xzel··on The State of Web Scraping in 2021
I'd suggest Puppeteer / Playwright. Both are great. Iirc the puppeteer team largely moved to playwright.
xzel··on Finally, on CBS, the football matches the business cards
They often have line indicators to show field goal range. I'm not sure if that's specific one broadcaster. I agree field position would be handy.
xzel··on Details of some 100M visitors to Thailand exposed online
If you have moved recently and or a few times, and not updated your mailing address etc, they might struggle to get in contact with you. I only noticed mine almost 9 months after the fact due to my credit score dropping ~200 points.
xzel··on Details of some 100M visitors to Thailand exposed online
I totally agree with you in theory, but someone went and created debt in my name. That is a form of theft. They used my identity to commit a theft. When I was filing a police report, they were talking about how to file it, as fraud, theft and/or identity theft. I thought it was funny that I was considering the semantics of what type of theft it was as well. I agree that the problem is with the system, but I don't think calling it something else will remove the current onus on the individual vs. the company. Anyways, at the end of the day we were both defrauded.

What I do take issues with is how easy they make it with no compensation. Someone opened an account in my name in a state I haven't been to in 10 years while I was 3000 miles away on the other coast. In the end, I felt like I should have been paid for my time from the company that let this happen because at the end of the day they felt to me like an accomplice.

xzel··on Details of some 100M visitors to Thailand exposed online
Yeah it sucked but honestly it could have been a lot worse. My credit score rebounded pretty quickly. I also only caught it until after it made it to collections, so very close to where you were. Luckily I work freelance so there weren't any wages to garnish.
xzel··on Details of some 100M visitors to Thailand exposed online
I recently had my identity stolen and used for the first time. My data has been leaked so many times who knows where it was taken from (40+ hits on haveibeenpawned). The process of clearing the debt in my name was pretty enlightening. I feel like it’s only going downhill from here.
xzel··on Is water always the best choice on a hot day?
Pocari Sweat is also sold all over south east Asia. Great to help ward off a hangover as well. Will second it isn’t a normal western flavored drink but I quite enjoyed it while I was living where it was available.
xzel··on Yarn 3.0
I don’t think in general I’ve ever had a hard time selling it. The issue is the decision pretty much all or nothing; everyone has to be using it as well. Getting a number of people to switch is always difficult.
xzel··on Ask HN: Introduction to Analog Synthesizers (Simulation OK)
Some great resources have already been posted that I'd second such as the Ableton website and Syntorial. I'd add the course by Sean Luke out of GMU [0] if you'd like something after and possibly a little more academic. His ebook is free on his site. If you're able to find a copy of The Roland Synthesizer Book [1] I found it incredibly interesting reading. They have pictures of patches for specific sounds. I'm not sure if anyone would be able to find a print version though and I've assumed they're collector's items.

xzel··on Show HN: I’m an introvert – made an app to help maintain connections with people
I almost wrote a similar app (but in a much more limited version) to keep up with friends and family but, ironically, as an extrovert. I wanted to have their birthdays and the last time we spoke so I could keep up with them if our contact was slipping. Congrats on launching! I'll take a look at this to see if it fits my use case.
