xyzzy4··on Wealth isn’t created at the top, it is merely devoured there
It's usually created by one frugal couple not spending much of their income their entire life, and then passing on the savings. Money that isn't spent generates even more money passively.
xyzzy4··on Why one Republican voted to kill privacy rules: “Nobody has to use the Internet”
Not necessarily. Technological progress seems to be slowing.
xyzzy4··on Remove United from your flight results
You can't blame a tiger for biting you.
xyzzy4··on How do you make programmers work 60-80 hours per week?
To answer the actual question:

1. Pay your programmers per hour, and pay them very well. For example many people who are paid $200/hour would work 80 hours per week.

2. Provide free taxis or have easy public transportation to their homes.

3. Offer to pay for their children's daycare if they work extra hours.

4. Provide free food delivery from nearby restaurants.

xyzzy4··on Does it scale? Who cares (2011)
Ok but please don't do things like using nested array searches with bad runtime when you can use hashmaps instead. I hate seeing code or using programs that are extremely unoptimized.
xyzzy4··on How not to create traffic jams: Don’t let people park for free
Honestly we should aim to replace free parking with free Uber's.

xyzzy4··on New York City bans employers from asking potential workers about past salary
>Most companies already prohibit employees from discussing salaries, under penalty of termination.

This is actually illegal in many states. Workers have a legal right to discuss salaries.

>Freedom of speech pertains to legislation from congress preventing political speech.

Not correct. Free speech is about any freedom of expression, not just political speech. There is endless amounts of case law to back this up.

xyzzy4··on New York City bans employers from asking potential workers about past salary
Let's say they make a law saying you can't ask your coworkers what their salary is - wouldn't you agree that is against freedom of speech?
xyzzy4··on New York City bans employers from asking potential workers about past salary
Making a law that says "Employers can't say or ask X" goes directly against freedom of speech.
xyzzy4··on New York City bans employers from asking potential workers about past salary
This is bad for the free market and freedom of speech. I hope it gets challenged on First Amendment grounds.
xyzzy4··on Ask HN: The most cyberpunk city in the world?
I spent a few months in India and I thought it was extremely cyberpunk. I can see Africa being similar.
xyzzy4··on Would You Rather Have $1M or $5,000 Monthly in Retirement?
It depends on how good you are at investing. For example, if Warren Buffett was starting over again, he would probably make better use of the $1 million.
xyzzy4··on Some Saudi women are secretly deserting their country
You can also get a fiancé visa and marry in the United States.
xyzzy4··on Uber president Jeff Jones is quitting
Or maybe he thinks his current mansions, sports cars, and retirement funds are good enough?
xyzzy4··on What are some things you wish you knew when you started programming?
When I was younger I used to not know the benefits of hash maps and used arrays for almost everything.
xyzzy4··on Heads or Tails: The Impact of a Coin Toss on Major Life Decisions and Happiness [pdf]
Ok but maybe your father or mother would've had a baby with someone else, and then you'd be that person.
xyzzy4··on Heads or Tails: The Impact of a Coin Toss on Major Life Decisions and Happiness [pdf]
His/her consciousness might exist inside a different person though.
xyzzy4··on Code is not literature (2014)
Reading code is more like figuring out all the plumbing of a large building.
xyzzy4··on The 10,000-hour rule is wrong and perpetuates a cruel myth
I think so.
xyzzy4··on Cops Told This Uber Driver It's Illegal to Film Them. Surprise, He's a Lawyer
You need to live somewhere away from cops, such as in the wilderness in Alaska.
xyzzy4··on The 10,000-hour rule is wrong and perpetuates a cruel myth
I've thought I was good at coding since middle school. Of course my code actually sucked back then, but at the time I thought I was really good. So I kept doing it on and off throughout my life.
xyzzy4··on What Is the Highest Salary Can a Programmer Make?
She has just accepted a new job that'll start soon, so she'll hopefully make some more. She is requesting 4 lakhs per year (~$6000 dollars) but doesn't know if it'll be that yet.

xyzzy4··on You May Want to Marry My Husband
This is why you shouldn't be ashamed of web browsing, watching Youtube, and going on Facebook at work. You never know when your life is about to end. Living like a monk who only focuses on work is not very satisfying.
