xuhu··on Snapshotting memory to scrape encrypted network requests
Why not get the symmetric key from process memory and then decrypt the recorded or live traffic with it ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj_FjO6TqXg

xuhu··on Stealth bomber in flight on Google Maps
For a few minutes I was convinced this one had crashed on that mountain top: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Lake+Tarni%C8%9Ba/@46.7229...
xuhu··on Ask HN: My client want an agent on my laptop. Is this the new normal?
Dual boot between your personal OS and the work OS.
xuhu··on NASA's new sleeping bags could prevent eyeball 'squashing' on the ISS
There are veins for other liquids, just like there are for blood. The liquids don't lie around everywhere under the skin.
xuhu··on It’s time to stop using Python 3.6
"Third-party Python libraries and frameworks are going to start dropping Python 3.6 support. And that means if those libraries have a critical bug, the fix might not be available on Python 3.6."

For python libraries included as distro packages, aren't source packages identical between python 3.9 and python 3.6 ? Is there anything more than a rebuild neccessary ?

And for pypi libraries, is there any extra work the upstream maintainer has to do to support 3.6 ? What would dropping support for 3.6 mean from a library developer ?

xuhu··on Anti-patterns when building container images
There is probably no nsenter equivalent for "kubectl exec thepod -- /bin/sh" if you can't ssh into the node.
xuhu··on Installing Windows and Linux into the same partition
If only there was a way using suspend-and-kexec to allow switching in 5 seconds between linux and windows, without having to reboot each time. There was a PoC for WinXP, but I doubt it works with recent Windows versions.
xuhu··on This implanted microchip may one day control your sleep
Augustus Cole from that X-Files episode would like to disagree.
xuhu··on 60x speed-up of Linux “perf”
Afl-fuzz runs a program until main() and then forks it repeatedly. An empty main() can be called at least 10000 times per second this way.
xuhu··on Ask HN: How to deal with loved ones that are affected by fake news?
Discussing news is just like tech support and I try to avoid berating them over what they know or believe. I have no expectation of one of us changing our beliefs about vaccination risks, or them figuring out how to do firmware updates. We do figure things out, but it depends more on the amount of trust, and less about the soundness of arguments.
xuhu··on Slackware 15.0 release candidate one
The page loads in 10 seconds on an i7-10850H, and it's not due to downloading the html. Chrome just freezes while parsing the DOM or something.
xuhu··on Site Isolation in Firefox
Let's steal everything we can grab, it will slow others from stealing.

Let's buy all the toilet paper, it will slow others from buying toilet paper.

xuhu··on Speedbuilding LLVM/Clang in 2 minutes on ARM
I used to run american fuzzy lop on consumer dual-channel motherboards, and got about a 6x speedup from a 16-core Ryzen setup.

Are these cloud instances running on 40-channel ram motherboards ? Otherwise isn't it wasteful to have 80 cpu's on a single socket ?

xuhu··on Trypophobia
Aren't most images variations on a wasp nest ?
xuhu··on The new web browser for power-users
Birth rates are about 1.1% in both countries. Life expectancy is above 70 years across the two. And you can use the Euro to buy goods and services everywhere. I think they're more than a little similar.
xuhu··on Retro nostalgia and why my new website looks like Window 9x (2019)
I wonder why icons and GUI elements look weird when scaled (I have 125% scaling enabled in Windows 10) whereas Windows 95 screenshot images look perfect in the same browser (Chrome). The website seems to use images for Close, Minimize, Maximize icons so it's probably not a scaling issue.
xuhu··on Audacity 3.0
More like the GIMP of audio editing.
xuhu··on You can't censor away extremism or any other problem
More like a country that accepts visas.
xuhu··on Ask HN: Embedding a reset-password form directly in email?
It's harder for the user to tell that the email is from the right website, as opposed to checking the domain in the address bar. If i send an email from "Google" <passwordreset@gmail.com> with a password reset form, would people type their passsword and hit submit ?
xuhu··on Don’t blindly prefer emplace_back to push_back
When adding items to maps it becomes less obvious (when learning from examples at least) whether map.emplace({Key(args), Value(args)}) avoids copies for Key, Value, pair<Key, Value>, or all of them.
xuhu··on Facebook is pushing back on Apple’s new iPhone privacy rules
Won't this get handled by apps asking users to choose between all tracking, or multi-page-collapsible-ambiguous-form-for-selective-tracking ? Nobody spends minutes to deselect every category in those forms.
xuhu··on Facebook is pushing back on Apple’s new iPhone privacy rules
If your feed reader app was collecting the websites people visited and selling that data to others, you might have to ask users for permission now.
xuhu··on Firefox 86.0
How does Total Cookie Protection work with sites that redirect users to authentication providers on other domains ? What about shops that redirect to payment processors that rely on some magic cookie sharing in the background ? What about company.com loading some cookie-dependent content from company-cdn.com ?
xuhu··on Has Amazon Ruined the Name Alexa?
I'm colorblind and don't get offended by people asking "is this shirt red or green" when they find out. I started enjoying it once I had enough comeback lines to pick from.
xuhu··on Ask HN: Why are software developers not more like lawyers?
You need a person to interact with each client in the law business, whereas you can sell the same subscription to all customers, most of which don't call support.
xuhu··on Cambridge Analytica psychologist advising Covid19 disinformation network
People have more power when they form a group. And some will promote any conviction as long as it tips the scales in their favor. It's A/B testing driven politics.
xuhu··on Show HN: A retrainable subtitle synchronizer you can now build your own
A hash of what ? Torrents ? There are often 23.9fps and 25fps versions which are not interchangeable.
xuhu··on Qutebrowser 2.0
I'm building it now with PyQt from source on ubuntu-20.04 since PyQt5-sip is missing from OS packages. Isn't this (a 50-minute build time on a popular distro) seen as a big barrier to adoption ?
xuhu··on Show HN: I made an alarm clock
My 8:03AM cron job wipes the MBR on my test VM. And the alarm clock is set to 8AM. Been using it since 2016.
