xuhu··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
He worked on: Go, the Sawzall language for processing logs, and distributed systems. Go and Sawzall are usable and used outside Google.

Are those distributed systems valuable primarily to Google, or are they related to Kubernetes et cetera ?

xuhu··on Show HN: Shittp – Volatile Dotfiles over SSH
How much time does it add when running e.g. "shittp user@lan-host uname" ?
xuhu··on 1M Downloads of Zorin OS 18
Thank God for lucrative work higher up the stack. Maybe programmers will stop being the only scapegoats for rising home prices and the high cost of living.
xuhu··on FFmpeg to Google: Fund us or stop sending bugs
It's as useful as brute forcing one of your neighbor's 100 online passwords every day and writing it on the door of a random supermarket.
xuhu··on Visopsys: OS maintained by a single developer since 1997
I wonder if Visopsys, Windows 3.11 and others could work as a daily driver running in qemu, started from a Linux initrd that has just a browser and qemu. "Opening" the browser in Visopsys actually switches to the browser running on the host, and Alt-Tab switches back to Visopsys.
xuhu··on Mini smartphones from Japan [video]
I wonder why the youtuber went for the ultra close-up framing. It does kind of make sense since faces look even smaller on a credit card sized phone.
xuhu··on Wind turbine blade transportation challenges
Why don't they just transport the blades standing up ?
xuhu··on A Linux version of the Procmon Sysinternals tool
This can trace all processes on the host while strace traces one PID and its descendants. And bpf tracing does not stop processes at each syscall, so they run without slowdowns.
xuhu··on In 2006, Hitachi developed a 0.15mm-sized RFID chip
Were you the ghost writer for the Headhunters (2011) film ?
xuhu··on I made a real-time C/C++/Rust build visualizer
Is there a tool that records the timestamp of each executed command during a build, and when you rebuild, it tells you how much time is left instead of "building obj 35 out of 1023" ?

Or (for cmake or ninja) use a CSV that says how long each object takes to build and use it to estimate how much is left ?

xuhu··on A simple 16x16 dot animation from simple math rules
Is it possible to create a tixy QR code that contains a link to itself ?
xuhu··on Mark Zuckerberg says social media is over
That creeps me out, and probably everyone who realizes it. But, and it's not a tongue in cheek question, why not try to use it to your advantage ?
xuhu··on Zoom bias: The social costs of having a 'tinny' sound during video conferences
Would I sound better on Zoom if I took out one wireless earbud and spoke into it ?
xuhu··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
Yes. Then there's the fact that they do this on a daily basis to avoid accountability.
xuhu··on Expanding AI Overviews and Introducing AI Mode
What 8K TVs are the best ?

Definitely go with Acme, they're our highest paying^W^W best performer in this segment.

xuhu··on FFmpeg School of Assembly Language
"Assembly language of FFmpeg" leads me to think of -filter_complex. It's not for human consumption even once you know many of its gotchas (-ss and keyframes, PTS, labeling and using chain outputs, fading, mixing resolutions etc).

But then again no-one is adjusting timestamps manually in batch scripts, so a high-level script on top of filter_complex doesn't have much purpose.

xuhu··on Show HN: LLMpeg
For some reason, when ffmpeg reencodes from 23.97fps h264 to the same fps and codec, the result looks choppy, like the shutter speed was halved or something. The smart lossless encoding you mentioned helps a lot here.
xuhu··on Olympians turn to OnlyFans to fund dreams due to 'broken' finance system (2024)
(flashbacks of reading comprehension exams intensify)

He doesn't seem to state his position on whether proper sex work should be stigmatized or not, just that others think it should be.

xuhu··on A Tesla Cybertruck 'blew up' outside Trump's hotel in Las Vegas
Why waste a perfectly good Cybertruck ? Model Y also has plenty of room, and it can also drive itself.
xuhu··on Ask HN: Programmers who don't use autocomplete/LSP, how do you do it?
Same as driving in the city without Waze. Replying to an email in German without Google Translate. There are a bunch of reasons, one of them is because I like it.
xuhu··on Solaar is a Linux manager for many Logitech keyboards, mice, and other devices
AFAIK the keyboard in question only uses USB for charging. It can't send keys over the wire.

That said, before getting the MX keys I bought a Dell 7440 keyboard on ebay for $20, fastened it on top of a 6mm clear acrylic plate with M3 screws, along with a Teensy chip running kbd firmware:

xuhu··on "Rules" that terminal programs follow
How did copy-pasting text between programs fit in the initial shell design ? You can't paste from a remote tmux to a local one, you can't mouse-copy multiple lines from a vim vertical split, etc. Where's the terminal clipboard that works across programs ?
xuhu··on Parkinson's Law: It’s real, so use it
What's the sense in making companies more efficient, harder to disrupt and putting them in a position to create a monopoly as they become larger ?
xuhu··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
More likely he wants paid advertising to be marked as such. For whose benefit do advertising regulations exist ?
xuhu··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
https://snoop.ro/cazul-bunelu-firma-sustinatorilor-lui-georg...

Explains the money trail, and there's even a nice picture with one of the sovereign candidates and the Tracia Unita group who paid for the campaign.

xuhu··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
Perfectly fine, as long as the supporter and candidate are not part of the same well known group of interest.
xuhu··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
Just like the umpire at the tennis match can grant victory to player X, and then take their title away when the doping tests come back.
xuhu··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
It all depends on whether the candidate asked for the help.
xuhu··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
If my university proves I cheated on my entry exams, I fully expect them to throw me out, before or after the first day of school.
xuhu··on AI isn't unleashing imaginations, it's outsourcing them
It might depend on whether you know it has AI in it or not.
