xu_ituairo··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
I agree that the releases to correspond, but the way you’ve said this is probably making someone’s day worse
xu_ituairo··on Blender 5.0
This seems like an unnecessarily unkind response. The post you're replying to is sharing their opinion and asking what people who are in the industry think about it.
xu_ituairo··on Apple M3 Ultra
FaceID was just one example they gave (which is probably faster and more energy efficient now).

Image recognition, OCR, AR and more are applications of the NPU that didn’t exist at all on older iPhones because they have would be too intensive for the chips and batteries.

xu_ituairo··on UnitedHealth hired a defamation law firm to go after social media posts
Your response feels unnecessarily unkind
xu_ituairo··on Llama 3.1
This feels somewhat analogous to games like Quake being open-sourced though still needing the user to provide the original game data files.
xu_ituairo··on Apple's AI will erode human creativity one prompt at a time
I think this is about the scale of it. This is going to be running on every iPhone and Mac, rather than a 3rd party app or website you buy or go to.

It’s now built into the operating system.

New update comes with an app dedicated to generating AI images and email and notes have features that generate and summarise text.

xu_ituairo··on Show HN: Collaborative ASCII Drawing with Telnet
Wild that telnet isn’t installed by default on modern Macs. Times have changed.
xu_ituairo··on Show HN: I made a Mac app to search my images and videos locally with ML
This is an unkind nitpick of something someone has made.

It’s an app that runs on a Mac. What framework it’s running on doesn’t make it less of an app.

xu_ituairo··on Claiming high user satisfaction, IRS will decide on renewing free tax site
Your reply feels unkind. They just said they lived in Sweden for a time. I don’t think it implies luxury or that they’re a wealthy jet-setting cosmopolitan. It could be for one of many reasons.

I also don’t know what’s wrong with hearing the opinion of a jet-setting cosmopolitan anyhow.

xu_ituairo··on Recreating the Flying Toasters screen saver for the Vision Pro
Maybe some sort of cube mapping on the toasters to give them a reflective metallic look will make them blend with the environment more, situating them in the space and harkening to the original

(The APIs don’t let you use the actual environment for reflections, right?)

xu_ituairo··on You can't leak users' data if you don't hold it
We shouldn’t let perfect be the enemy of good
xu_ituairo··on The Apple Vision Pro’s missing apps
Maybe if Vision Pro takes off they’ll charge a higher fee for it like they do for higher resolution subscriptions.
xu_ituairo··on PinePhone review after a month of daily driving
How are you finding it?
xu_ituairo··on Apple Vision Pro available for pre-order
The pre-order process says it may have trouble with hard contact lenses, but soft are fine
xu_ituairo··on YouTube and Spotify won't launch Apple Vision Pro apps, joining Netflix
I expect a use case for Spotify on the Vision Pro to be multitasking — listening to music while browsing the web or using other apps, same as phones and computers
xu_ituairo··on Northlight technology in Alan Wake 2
Your reply would have been a lot nicer without the first sentence
xu_ituairo··on Meta Quest 3
The Steam Deck is extremely open in both software and hardware
xu_ituairo··on Adobe will charge “credits” for generative AI
“Generative credits provide priority processing of generative AI content across features powered by Firefly in the applications that you are entitled to. Generative credit counts reset each month.”
xu_ituairo··on Apple's A17 Pro Within 10% of i9-13900K, 7950X in Single-Core Performance
The new iPhones can now connect to a monitor via USB-C, so with that and a Bluetooth controller you’ve got a good stew going.
xu_ituairo··on Jimmy Buffett has died
This feels like a needlessly unkind and uncharitable response to someone pondering something.
xu_ituairo··on Server-side rendering is a better choice for many applications (2020)
It’s a strongly held opinion that you think most people would disagree with you on. A contrarian belief, not just an opinion.
xu_ituairo··on Server-side rendering is a better choice for many applications (2020)
Do you mean something similar to Svelte becoming dominant?
xu_ituairo··on Airport Pianos: Find Pianos in Airports
It does look cute, but is also fairly formidable.

And a software update earlier this year introduced velocity sensitivity.

xu_ituairo··on Airport Pianos: Find Pianos in Airports
Expensive, but the Teenage Engineering OP-1 is great if you can swing it.

Battery for days and days and completely self-contained. You can create entire songs on the go.

Though maybe more of a synth than portable piano — depends on what you’re looking for.

xu_ituairo··on UCLA floor tiles decoded, pay homage to first internet message (2013)
The Werner Herzog documentary ‘Lo and Behold’ opens with a great telling of this story.

Generally a great documentary about facets and characters of the internet.

xu_ituairo··on Marijuana addiction: those struggling often face skepticism
I get the feeling they’re saying they regret smoking so much because it’s cognitively damaged them long term, which isn’t good.

(I imagine the friends here are a rough “control” for baseline cognitive potential)

xu_ituairo··on Marijuana addiction: those struggling often face skepticism
Does anyone have ideas or direction on undoing mental harm caused by smoking weed for a long time?

I started at 28 (so not very young) and smoked for maybe five years. I’ve stopped for a year now and while generally feel better, still feel slightly slow regarding memory and word recall. Lacking wit and often umming while looking for the right word or someone’s name.

I’ve seen research suggesting that word recall is one of the main long-lasting effects of cannabis that persists after cessation.

xu_ituairo··on Threads, an Instagram app
What’s the joke?
xu_ituairo··on June 2023 Data Dump is missing
Maybe it’s because he can stay in pioneer mode, doing new things like Libra, VR etc.

Maybe in some businesses pioneering is less likely (by nature, or the corporate culture) like Stack Overflow making inroads into crypto or VR or AI.

xu_ituairo··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
Have there really been many failed Apple products since Steve’s return? As many failures as wins?

There were failures during Apple’s 80s/90s struggles but not many come to mind in recent decades.
