xthestreams··on "Police state" search got censored in Italy
> as with the new law that allows to arrest anyone who tests positive for substances in the table of illegal substances while driving in any case, without the person being actually altered or alterable

I think you should also link to something like this to draw a full picture: https://tg24.sky.it/politica/2025/05/07/codice-strada-sostan...

Which says:

> Now, the circular in question has, in fact, disavowed the previous version and clarified that that principle is worthless. In fact, in order for a person to be punishable for driving under the influence of drugs, there must be “a temporal correlation between the intake and driving, which takes the form of an enduring influence of the narcotic or psychotropic substance capable of exerting negative effects on driving ability.”

xthestreams··on More content by people, for people in Search
cnr.it is a domain which belongs to the Italian Research Council, and that subdomain seems to be a blog by the Institute of Microelectronics and Microsystems.

These are not scammers, it's probably an amateur researcher which published that information in a blog which is usually read by no-one. Probably it wasn't even meant to be public. But because of the prestige of the domain, it becomes first in relevant searches.

If you track down the author and send him a quick mail, I'm 100% sure they'll help.

I've worked at CNR.

xthestreams··on Ask HN: How to handle stress related diseases
If you can, try removing the source of stress. Depending on your situation, this may involve changing work environment.

I've been there, I was at a point in which I would either burn out (if I wasn't already) or change environment completely. I changed environment, and it's been the most difficult yet the best decision in my life

xthestreams··on Ask HN: How do you renew your interest in technology?
Thanks for taking the time to write this - it really gave me new ways of thinking about it :)
xthestreams··on Ask HN: Intel to M1 migration all or only data
I have the same dilemma. I think I'll start fresh while keeping a copy of my old disk around to copy stuff whenever I realize I need it.
xthestreams··on Black Hat Exploits of the Stupid-Easy 80s
I find it awesome that we all independently had the idea to perform this stupid trick. Fun in simplicity
xthestreams··on Black Hat Exploits of the Stupid-Easy 80s
Exactly the same here! What a memory. In my case, my fellow students started sending broadcast messages which included a lot more profanity. They reached the computer of the school principal, which immediately came to our lab asking for explanations. Lucky for me, the teacher was a great guy who just knew I was the one that started all that mess, but he didn't say a word.

I also remember writing .bat fork bombs during the pauses. My classmate would pick a victim and while they were away I would completely freeze their PC. Yes, silly. And don't get me started on the remote shutdown messages, again enabled by default.

Fun times :)

xthestreams··on You might not need machine learning
> Instead of doing anything fancy, my program generates the coefficients at random to explore the space. If I wanted to generate a good driver for a course, I’d run a few thousand of these and pick the coefficients that complete the course in the shortest time.

It is worth pointing out that this strategy can likely overfit on the data that you have used for training: when you change the track, your car may not behave as good as before. In other words: the coefficients are only good for that specific track(s).

The author is still using Machine Learning, even if not with neural networks: the need for rigorous strategies for model selection doesn't disappear.

xthestreams··on What Makes Sand Soft?
More like, among all things industrial engineers feel, and among all things Anakin Skywalker feels, not liking sand is in common
xthestreams··on Please stop using CDNs for external JavaScript libraries
Mostly opinions without data, as usual. Why can't we as a community switch to a more serious scientific/engineeristic approach, at least in those areas where it is easy to do so?

Why should I trust this blog post on the "Caching" point, for example? It's got no data and no references.

"What are the chances that your user has visited a site which uses the exact same CDN as your site?" ... hey, you can measure that.

xthestreams··on Ruby adds experimental support for rightward assignments
I can't tell if this is a multiple joke or not
xthestreams··on Guy Is Suing the Patent Office for Deciding an AI Can't Invent Things
> “Such tools are not capable of true independent creativity. In order for AI tools to create new work, prior creative work must be used as training data”

Isn't this exactly how humans do it too?

xthestreams··on People who can't see things in their mind could have memory trouble too: study
I guess you are well aware of the concept of lucid dreaming?
xthestreams··on People who can't see things in their mind could have memory trouble too: study
I can visualize to a limited extent, i.e. I can see anything I want but images are always very "unstable". I'm much better with music: I can listen to music in my head very clearly, even though there is a strong focus on the lead melody (e.g. voice, guitar). But I can also create music from scratch and let it unfold seamlessly, with any kind of instruments or vocals I want.
xthestreams··on Linear Regression
Introducing linear regression with gradient descent can also be really confusing for a newcomer. Gradient descent solves a problem (nonlinear optimization) which does not exist here.
xthestreams··on Best Practices for ML Engineering
This is great for ML Engineering. Does anyone know a similar document for ML Research?
xthestreams··on A CS degree is better than teaching yourself how to code?
THIS. And it always surprises me when this association comes not only from outsiders, but from CS graduates too. This really shows a worrying lack of communication about the objectives of such degrees (perhaphs intentional?)
xthestreams··on Test-driven development: A great idea hiding behind a terrible implementation?
Regardless of my opinion on the topic, which I don't have:

why must software engineering be mainly opinion-based? Why can't we have objective facts, or at least only talk about objective facts without going out asserting one's opinions as truth?

AFAIK other engineering disciplines do not suffer from this problem as much as software engineering. This really bugs me.

xthestreams··on Ask HN: What's the best setup for ad blocking and tracker blocking?
I guess the stuff you're talking about totally falls under my "only block ads on those websites which clearly have no consideration for usability [...] or for privacy"

I didn't say that ads are great. I said that NOT ALL ads are bad, and without them some great content couldn't exist, because most people need funds for their work and selling stuff or services sometimes isn't an option.

So if you're talking about tracking ads, I'm totally with you. But if you're talking about ALL ads, then your idea may be an utopia.

xthestreams··on Ask HN: What's the best setup for ad blocking and tracker blocking?
Then do not use those websites, if their morality doesn't suit you.

In your words, using a service without paying for it is also theft.

xthestreams··on Ask HN: What's the best setup for ad blocking and tracker blocking?
> What's the best setup these days for ad-blocking + privacy/tracker-blocking that doesn't break the web?

If one doesn't want to break the web, they shouldn't block ads since most of the web is free thanks to ads.

I use a blacklist approach and only block ads on those websites which clearly have no consideration for usability (popups, autoplaying videos, ...) or for privacy.

I have found that Unlock Origin is great for this approach.

xthestreams··on JavaScript: The Modern Parts
While I fully agree with you, being Turing complete has nothing to do with it. I think the article is slightly wrong too on this point.

Turing completeness is a property about the computational "power" of a language. It has nothing to do with the environment in which the program runs. For example, it can exist a language that is Turing complete and has no way at all to access the network: it can do no harm, doesn't matter if it has the same computational power as Javascript.

xthestreams··on Modern JavaScript tooling is too complicated?
> But if you want to be a skilled front-end software engineer, it's in your interest to tackle these tools with some zeal.

I guess what we are saying is that there must be a better, not yet invented way to do frontend, without having to deal with this huge complexity that is unique to this specific field.

xthestreams··on Ask HN: Is Google Secretly Undermining Firefox?
Try changing the UA string and you'll see that Google is explicitly downgrading the search experience on Firefox for Android
xthestreams··on Microsoft Contractors Are Listening to Some Skype Calls
AI researcher here. While industry doesn't usually find the need for huge complex models, I don't think your statement is fair, nor accurate. Can you provide some examples of AI tech that in your opinion is "a lot of if statements"?
xthestreams··on Ask HN: How Often do you reformat your peronal computer?
Whenever I want to sell it.
xthestreams··on Bill Gates Resume (1974)
What are the reasons for which you're saying it would be binned?

(I'm asking because I want to understand, I'm not implying you're wrong)

xthestreams··on Google to stop listening in temporarily after data leak
I always keep my ad-blocker off by default, because in general I want to support websites that show ads, except when they get in my way. I had my ad-blocker deactivated when I visited this link, and this is what I saw:

https://ibb.co/BTkP6TL

(huge pop-up telling me to deactivate my ad-blocker in order to read the article, even if it was already deactivated).

Ironically, I then activated my ad-blocker for that website and the popup went away. Such idiotic practices.

xthestreams··on Big O Notation – Using not-boring math to measure code’s efficiency
I think you (and others) are misunderstanding the purpose of the big-O notation. It is used to discuss about algorithms, not about their implementation.
xthestreams··on No CS Degree – Interviews with self-taught developers
The most important thing that my CS degree taught me is to recognize that I know nothing.
