xs··on Why it’s so hard to innovate in the e-mail space (2014)
I'm trying to build an email platform too, yes it's hard. But I thought it was only because I'm a beginner and 1 man team.

Some of the reasons why I think it's hard:

* I don't think security was a big deal to many of the mail applications when they were being built. I tried and gave up so many times trying to find a strong hashing algorithm that both dovecot and ruby supported. There was practically no documentation on this and it felt like I was venturing into territory never before seen.

* Parsing emails to be display correctly seems impossible. Sometimes emails have "<br>" in them and sometimes they have "\n". But what if the "\n" doesn't mean newline but it's just what someone wrote in the email? They come in a variety of mime types and formats. It sometimes seems impossible to do this.

* Not everyone uses the RFC standards! I thought the RFC said that a subject can only be 78 chars long. Yet I get emails all day long that go way beyond this which cause major problems in my code. AM I THE ONLY ONE AROUND HERE THAT CARES ABOUT RFCS?

xs··on Leaving the Mac App Store
Sketch team. I am a Mac user and heard thing about your product but haven't yet checked it out. This blog post is the first time I've visited your website. Can you answer one thing for me? Why don't you have a link to sketch.com from blog.sketch.com?
xs··on DEFCON 23 Badge Challenge
Careful. Now the NSA will be looking to hire you.
xs··on Privacy Badger – Block spying ads and invisible trackers
EFF team. Grats on having this out for almost a year now. Any stats from this that you're willing to share? Like for instance have any advertisers noticed this yet and stopped tracking people so ads can be displayed? I've got widgets on my website for disqus, twitter, facebook, etc and each of these are blocked by PB. This upsets me as the website owner that content I want my user to see is being blocked. Any word from them about this?
xs··on The Apple Watch
I thought CDs sucked. Scratched way too easy. Don't let some children borrow your CDs or else they won't play when you get them back. Cassettes were much more durable and even repairable. A CD warped by the sun is garbage, but a cassette warped by the sun can be salvaged if you put the tape in another cassette case. You could also tape two ends of the cassette tape back together if it gets torn or cut. Yes the song is garbled for a second but the entire album isn't ruined. A skipping CD is a more annoying sound than my alarm clock.

xs··on Paperspace – A full computer you can access from any web browser
What do you get for the pre-order? The link takes me directly to a credit card page. Do you get a paperweight + 0 months of service? Or does it include a few months to get started?
xs··on Paperspace – A full computer you can access from any web browser
Is the paperweight optional? I'd like buy the paperweight for my father, but then be able to access his paperspace from my computer when he needs help on something.
xs··on Paperspace – A full computer you can access from any web browser
I love this idea. I'm very tempted to pre-order but the lack of a pricing page keeps away from pulling my wallet out.

Here is one use I'm really interested in. I'd love to get this for my father who is not very computer literate and needs a lot of help with it. He doesn't have strong security concerns because he only uses it for email and basic card games. Unfortunately I live hundreds of miles away and have a difficult time doing remote support for him. With this device+service it cleans up the clutter on his desk, and I hope allows for us both to connect to the VPS even though I don't have the paperweight. This way I can help him when he needs it and I can connect with ease.

xs··on Pygments, a generic syntax highlighter
Pygments for me has been easy to get working on my blog but extremely difficult and so far impossible for me to customize. My blog is Ruby based and so first of all I don't quite understand how a python program can be added as a ruby gem. Second, I really don't understand how to create my own lexer. Do I edit the Ruby gem? Do I need to create my own gem? If I edit the gem locally I may be able to do something but how do those edits get to Heroku? The task is much more complicated than I have the knowledge for.
xs··on Student StarCraft AI Tournament 2014
This is great. What other games can I play by legally modifying code to change the way my player acts? One example that comes to mind is http://alexnisnevich.github.io/untrusted/
xs··on Echarts 2.0
The link you gave actually has 20,000 points of data on that graph. The example is interactive so go ahead and change line 45 or line 65 to something bigger then click the green button if you want to see a bigger data set. I love how their examples are interactive right on the page.
xs··on Show HN: Rudolph Runner
I agree. Without knowing where I may land because my jump height and duration is random I cannot skillfully succeed in the game.
xs··on Launching in 2015: A Certificate Authority to Encrypt the Entire Web
While this is nice and I'm happy to see such a product coming, I still don't see a free TLS solution for my smaller projects. Heroku will still charge me $20/mo for TLS even if I have my certificate. Cloudflare will also want to charge me to inspect TLS. I could drop both and get a Linode but then that costs too and is a pain to setup a server myself.

xs··on Meteor hits 1.0
Ah thanks. But if Rails is my coding platform of choice how does this integrate into it?
xs··on Meteor hits 1.0
Hi meteor.com team. I've scanned the home page and even looked at some other links on the site. I still don't know what this does. Is it a javascript library? Or template maker? A project packager? I have a lot to do and very little time. Can you make a quick video that describes why I should use Meteor and what it does for me? Thanks!

xs··on Cursors
I would like the cursor to change color slowly as it ages on each level. This way you can see who's been in that level for a long time and who's just arriving.
xs··on Show HN: Sublime Text Book
I was using vim as my primary coding platform for a decade until I met sublime text. Notepad++, crimson editor never cut it for me but ST impressed me from the beginning and continued to give me features and freedom to do whatever I want (except print). You can't ever hang up vim since it's much quicker to edit using vim when you're ssh'd into a server. But if the files are locally or on a share I prefer Sublime Text for the following reasons:

* Vim in Windows never felt good to me. * Multi-cursor editing * auto-recover unsaved files upon loading the program * snippets (type a little get a lot back) * the ability to use a hotkey to open files quickly * the robust hotkeys, regexs, and visual feedback are on par or better than vim.

xs··on Show HN: Sublime Text Book
I've created my own syntax highlighter plugin for ST. I still don't know how to do it even after completing it. There's just so much about it that is guesswork.
xs··on Show HN: Sublime Text Book
I used vim for 10 years; now I prefer Sublime Text. I have a need to use a text editor a lot in Windows and never liked the experience that vim for Windows gave me so I gave Sublime Text a try. I quickly fell in love with the multi-cursor editing and ability to auto-recover unsaved files when I close and reopen the program. From there I discovered new awesome features including vim mode which lets me use vim commands within ST if I so choose. I am really happy to know vim because it's installed on every linux/unix distro ever and when I'm sshing into servers that's what I use, but for the bulk of my coding, ST all the way.
xs··on Show HN: Sublime Text Book
Maybe when you get into defining custom languages you're going past "power user" and into the "developer" realm? I think by understanding and using the topics covered in the book you can certainly call yourself a power user by the end.
xs··on Posty – A comprehensive, modern Postfix and Dovecot administration tool
I'm not 100% sure yet, but I'm 100% excited about this. Problems today is that Google/Yahoo/MS have all given the government backdoor access to your email if you have those providers. This application solves that by having you host your own email service. Deploying postfix + dovecot with multi domain usage and multi alias capabilities is hard! They did all that work for you. I'm not sure how the client works yet or if you're supposed to make your own front end to this using the API from Posty. Either way I'm excited to try it out in hopes to move my email out of the hands of big companies and into my own hands.
xs··on Earbits is back online
Actually. In your defense I've clicked "listen now" and been happily jamming out for an hour now. You're doing great at finding great music for me. Just keep on doing that. :)
xs··on Earbits is back online
Dear earbits blogmaster (and all other blogmasters that are guilty of this). Why can't I click on the earbits logo and have you take me to earbits.com? It took me 3 full minutes to find the link to your main website from your blog. I've never heard of your site before and this was my entry. I didn't know it was a music streaming app so I didn't think to click "listen now" to expect to be taken to the main site.
xs··on Google releases stats on email encryption in transit
Take Cisco.com for example. There are a lot of systems there that are sending out emails. Employees and newsletters are probably encrypted but only make up a small portion of their outbound mail. Things like ticket updates are going to result in a huge volume of email. Cisco may have (wrongly) decided that because the ticketing system is a trusted source it doesn't need to be encrypted. So some of their email is going directly out from the tool and some is going through a smart host. This is probably why it's <50%.
xs··on YogaGlo Update
I feel like it would be easy to make money with workout videos if you can get Netflix to stream it. Currently there's no streaming Netflix workout videos. Yeah, none. On my Roku box I have a few options for yoga and workout channels including YogaGlo channel. However I don't see how $18/mo just for streaming yoga videos is an option when I only pay $8/mo for Netflix streaming videos.
xs··on Show HN: MightyName.com – Search over 4.7M available English .com domains
Besides "reed" here's another example "fee". It gives me feel and feet and even coffee. I'd also like to search for a specific word and not part of other words.
xs··on Pencil
Although it looks cool... for my tablet... It doesn't bring the collaboration I still seek. I often work remote and do screen sharing of my laptop. I have a wacom tablet that allows me to draw on my computer screen which is then being shared to my team. It would be great if I could use my existing iPad and something cool like pencil to do my drawing and have it display on my computer so my remote team can see it.
