xref··on Some might not see how much work it was to maintain xorg server
lol I guess it’s left as an exercise for the reader to test their Google Fu?
xref··on The Web Site to Remember National Semiconductor's Series 32000 Family
I thought National Semi was the company founded/run by that renown dirtbag CEO who among other things told some nuns to eat shit, but that was actually Cypress Semi

Nadella isn’t getting his info from HN threads.
xref··on The Best Timed Shot in TV History (Probably)
that specific clip would probably work even better if the blast sound was somewhat delayed like the pressure wave…
xref··on LIGO Surpasses the Quantum Limit
> provided the average uncertainty is above the limit

> reduces the uncertainty in one observable by increasing the uncertainty in the other observable

Seems like you’re both saying the same thing with different wording

xref··on Monty Python and the Holy Grail 48 1/2 year anniversary in theaters December
Woah buddy this is a family site
xref··on Unity is offering a runtime fee waiver if you switch to LevelPlay
They claim to have developed “proprietary technology” to detect this, but of course the better it works the worse their income would be…
xref··on The new toll to drive into Manhattan won't change much by itself
> a big fate evasion problem

Ahh, I was imagining a Final Destination scenario

xref··on The Rise and Fall of ESPN’s Leverage
> Perhaps athlete salaries will come back down to Earth as well

Ehhh you lost me there with that anti-player talking point parroted by the billionaire owners of the league. The players are part of a union, and their CBA says they get 48.8% of league revenue, while the owners get 51.2%.

But somehow people just latch onto “players salaries are too high”

xref··on iOS 17 sideloading support is coming, and Apple can’t stop it
I think AT&T in 1982 was the last company actually broken up. It seems like the DOJ tries to keep companies from getting too big in the first place now, with mixed results. In recent times Penguin/Random House/Simon & Schuster was blocked, AT&T/T-Mobile was blocked, but Microsoft/Activision succeeded

xref··on Calibre replacement considerations (2019)
I switched to Kitty terminal across all platforms about a year ago, a fantastic decision for me (initially I just wanted tmux-style windowing with no tmux) and Kovid built Kitty as well
xref··on New type of crime wave sweeps Oakland’s waterfront
We should probably start calling them copyright infringers, since pirate has been reappropriated.
xref··on Anti Warez Association, 1 (1993)
Maybe there’s a proscribed version
xref··on OpenTerraform – an MPL fork of Terraform after HashiCorp's license change
I’m curious what companies would run into that theoretical scaling limit, seeing as Google itself built and uses k8s/borg
xref··on Ancient Earth globe
I should have found a better word, shadows or relief or something. Ie: not smooth
xref··on Ancient Earth globe
I guess that’s a continuation of what Galileo shattered hundreds of years previously with his five observations through his homemade telescope that the Catholic Church was gonna burn him for.

From memory all these bodies were supposed to be “perfect and unblemished” or some such:

- lunar surface was textured

- Venus appeared as a crescent

- Jupiter had its own moons

- Saturn had “ears” (aperture was too small to resolve rings)

- Sun had spots

xref··on SEC asked Coinbase to halt trading in everything except bitcoin, CEO says
…though the Bitcoin Cash blockchain has valid txns going back to 2009 just like BTC. Everyone wants answers that are black and white, cut and dry. The world is a lot more grey.
xref··on Tesla on track to smash targets after producing almost a million EVs in 6 months

xref··on Tesla on track to smash targets after producing almost a million EVs in 6 months
Nobody remembers the first gas station. Nobody remembers who built the better gas pump. EV charging is already well down the path of simply being another commodity
xref··on Hashicorp lays off 8% of staff
I’d be curious if it was easy (or even possible) to recover data from a FileVault encrypted drive, which any IT dept worth its salt could remotely wipe
xref··on US urged to reveal UFO evidence after claim that it has intact alien vehicles
> likely few would hear a joke… take it way too literally…

This is the premise of about half of I Think You Should Leave skits

xref··on Woman with untreated TB finally in custody – held in “negative pressure” room
> she avoided disclosing her active Tuberculosis infection to the staph

I feel like this is the punchline to a great doctor joke but just needs a setup

xref··on Judge rules Wyoming corner crossers did not trespass
I believe corner crossing _was_ illegal until this court case
xref··on Judge rules Wyoming corner crossers did not trespass
I don’t know, blocking people off “your land” goes back centuries. Probably millennia.

xref··on State Farm halts new property insurance policies in California
It’s better insurance just isn’t available at any price. You can know going into the purchase that the home will be uninsurable so your financial picture needs to account for that.

Also in general I don’t believe you can get a mortgage without home insurance? So people buying these properties would have to come in cash.

xref··on Chinese Businesses Fueling the Fentanyl Epidemic Receive Millions in Crypto
The death penalty for murder isn’t appropriate.
xref··on In England, Bar Hill’s ‘Skull Comb’ Is an Iron Age Mystery
> he concluded it’s unlikely the comb was used for grooming, as its relatively short teeth lack signs of wear consistent with being pulled through hair repeatedly.

Pubic comb, only used when needed to brush the lice and crabs out

xref··on China is calling in loans to dozens of countries from Pakistan to Kenya
Burner account making claims with no data, then being disproven immediately by other commenters providing data? Seems super legit.
