A true "correction" would be bloody and very destructive, since no one in power is going to give up power willingly. They are more likely to go to the extreme and "cull" the masses to reduce what they see as the "problem".
Marching isn't going to change a damn thing when the folks in the IP protection business make 8 figures a year and can buy the government.

It's good to be the king. (Or at least deep capture the media, the administration and the Congress.)

"Did some growth hacking on the hedge funds, bagged it, 100% organic product..."
"Big Data" and "Data Scientist" are the latest buzzwords like Web 2.0 and Java were during their ORA hype-r eras.
There is a lot more data. There are a lot more tools and technology to deal with data. There is a need for high quality people that understand how to handle data. But there are no rockstars, there are people that have passion and spent years learning and teaching their craft. But they aren't rock stars. The best may get paid as much as a very well off doctor or business owner, but they aren't going to fill stadiums around the world, sell millions of t-shirts or be targets of media gossip columns.

"Hey cabbie!"
(True story...)
But I don't spend days tweaking the UI, I have a baseline of UI expectations that's not too difficult to meet. (But Windows 8 doesn't meet it... 'nother story for 'nother day...)
Plus when my buddies and I were interested in it, there was no hardware in the States to run it on. It did get one of our number into the PC532 scene and I came up a semi-interesting idea to turn graphics chips into encryption engines based on the NS32GX32 instruction set.
I haven't tried running the system in a few years, so your mileage may vary.
Which is a shame, because the Imp of the Perverse programer in my dreams always wanted to do low level coding in some other language besides assembly, C or Forth...
So here's a small list of activities that have kept me semi-sane through the years: Body building, hiking, reading, gardening, ren fairs, martial arts, shooting sports, cooking, ham radio, traveling, writing, robotics, public service, building, boating and dinner parties.
But the stock Intel driver works well enough, just don't want to figure out what sort of CLI cargo cult fixing it will take to get it going.
So is the author wallowing in pity or depression?
As a long time coder, most of my work is no longer in use. Many of my current internal projects at work are only in use by me or a small group of people, enough though they could help hundreds of others (clients, coworkers).
And code is never done. I have dozens of projects in various states of completeness. Even the code in production isn't "truly finished", but it works well enough and has passed review.
I'm going to work on a few other OSS projects that may never be seen by a handful of folks. That's fine. I don't want fame, I like solving problems and helping others.
