xr09··on Show HN: Dply – Free temporary Linux servers
Awesome service! I've been testing it hard these days and I'm very pleased. One small request, could you allow changing the ssh port to 443 from the web?
xr09··on Unix Tricks
j.py? The original is autojump: https://github.com/joelthelion/autojump/
xr09··on Are you paid to look busy?
When reading stuff like this I wonder, how do the Windows folks manage to do the same? A browser disguised as Visual Studio? doubledesktop.exe? I'm so thankful for my *nix with all these little toys.
xr09··on The new PHP
The thing is you have to be a medium-to-expert to be confident about Composer dependencies, every new dev is going to use the language API, which resembles a bunch of functions with no general pattern.

PHP users need to keep it together and set a common base, a standard library with sane defaults.

xr09··on Show HN: thedaywefightback.js
The Django Debug Toolbar is on, seems like you forgot to remove it from production servers.
xr09··on KeePass: OpenSource Password Manager
We use Keepass at work, but pass is beautiful, the unix way, I'll use it for my personal passwords.
xr09··on Coursera blocks access to students in Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria
Hi! Cuban here, pretty much same situation as you, I feel your pain, every time I see the little broken robot when attempting to get anything from Google Code I thank we have Github and Bitbucket.

If Github gets blocked we should get something on, If only blocked governments took this issue seriously and had these essential services covered, but I guess something as amazing as github takes real starters and not some lame government founded dev group.

Anyway, just saying, we blocked people should hang around more often.

xr09··on Announcing Stack Overflow in Portuguese
Por que começar com português? Queríamos começar com uma comunidade que atendesse a dois requisitos:

Um grande número de desenvolvedores talentosos, em que Grande parte deles se sentisse muito mais confortável em falar sua própria língua do que o inglês

Why start with portugese?

We wanted to begin with a community that fulfilled two requisites:

Having a large number of talented developers and many of them feeling much more comfortable speaking their own language than English.

It seems to me this is a move to catch Brazilian developers, a wise move I'd say.

xr09··on Don't Pipe to your Shell
I only pipe in-house projects I host myself and know exactly what will be the result, piping from the web seems rather naive.
xr09··on Does life end after 35?
Dude, please don't do that in prison.
xr09··on Does life end after 35?
Superman? Please stop messing with us poor geeks. ;)
xr09··on Google announces uProxy
So Google helps building a proxy for by passing their own censorship, Bravo Google, Bravo. (I'm being ironic of course)

This is what I get any time I try to download anything from Google Code or Android sdk or even read something hosted on GAE.

I'm in Cuba but the same should be for Iran and others "bad boys".

xr09··on The Coral Content Distribution Network
And now I know about this? I should hit me in the face.
xr09··on Abandoning PHP for Python
I know there is Symfony, Laravel, Slim and the rest but what bothers me about PHP is the language itself. It feels clumsy, full of monkeypatches all over it, as the result of many different shools of thought.

On the other side Python feels like one mind's labour, it just fits togheter.

xr09··on English has been my pain for 15 years
I read a lot of technical docs in English, and watch a lot of movies without subtitles to force my brain to catch the words, it worked pretty well so far.

I'm starting to read non-tech literature, is another league but I like it, is cool reading a book in its original language. (Robinson Crusoe right now..)

xr09··on 10gen is now MongoDB, Inc.
In spanish is a synonym for stupid, subnormal, idiot...
xr09··on Four fears for authoritarians
Actually in Cuba people (not the gov) have huge (like city wide) WiFi networks. The hell with the internet, the wifi has it all. (almost all)

My personal goal is to create apps for that WiFi, sounds fun optimizing a website for 802.11G 54Mb/s.

xr09··on Become the most frequent committer on Github
But that's cheating...

Do you want to work for a company that buys this lie and make them believe you are a code machine?

That lie WILL bite you in the back some day.

xr09··on Jimmy Wales: This is super cool. "I started to learn python..."
Jimmy Wales is a role model, you must have modesty and defined objectives to build that humongous platform and refuse to monetize, his quotations of "The Fountainhead" made me read it, awesome, the man really is a Howard Roark.
xr09··on Show HN: A site using zero images – any feedback on the UI?
Maybe I'm a freak but putting a js in a css folder feels weird.

<script src="/css/tyrejs.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

xr09··on Show HN: A site using zero images – any feedback on the UI?
For car owners this is a non-issue but we geeks are not that car-savvy. I tried several combinations before finding a good one.

Maybe a "most searched" sizes could beat this.

xr09··on Google Play cut payments to developers in Argentina
(Cuban in Cuba here)

The Cuban exile is really hurting the country, sometimes I see US and Cuba leaders try to make things up and some guy from Miami comes out and mess the whole thing, there is so much hate, nothing good comes out of this.

xr09··on Show HN: I built a self-hosted Basecamp alternative. Try the demo
Easy to solve, just host a sample site with test data.
xr09··on The 3.9 kernel is out
They say we must wait a little longer...
xr09··on I am burning out
Your situation calls for a personal project.
xr09··on I am burning out
So all Shakespeare's work and yet is awesome somehow. ;)
xr09··on I am burning out
Damn, you sure have some ego boy, I write lots of crap but I wouldn't consider all of it to be worth it of being used by the crowd, some of it may get to the masses but that is a delicate process of FOSS-Darwinian selection, you can't rush it.
xr09··on Linode hacked, CCs and passwords leaked
I'd give another trust vote to Linode, anyway this could happen to anyone.
xr09··on Why aren't Cubans, Quebecois, Saudis, Syrians allowed in Google Code Jam
Damn, I had my hopes with that name.
