xqyz··on Zimbabwe Has Only $217 Left in the Bank
You do realize of course that the government has other assets than money, right?
xqyz··on Doctor Who goes back in time to beat TV pirates
Same here (also Germany). Worse yet, even if a german broadcaster was offering it, chances are you would only be able to get it dubbed in Germany without the option to switch to the original language.
xqyz··on How Apple killed the Linux desktop
no? Most distributions transitioned to either gnome 3 or unity from gnome 2, not just ubuntu. And yes, Gnome 3 was part of the reason why I considered and in the end switched to OS X for my main machine (from Gentoo).
xqyz··on How to minimize a window: OS X and Mountain Lion
Very unfortunate title imho, since minimising windows can be accomplished by far easier methods (the button in the menu or pressing command+M for instance).
xqyz··on I can't make this stuff up
Clearly you haven't been to audiophile forums. 150 is pretty much entry level for those kind of people.
xqyz··on I can't make this stuff up
That's actually what kind of happened to me with MP3-Players. "Mhm, I could buy an iPod Nano for ~150 or this whatever-brand with more space for ~100. Two months later I got the iPod Classic, best decision ever."
xqyz··on I can't make this stuff up
If it's non-technical people speaking about the differences between to technical things you can almost guarantee that they are trying to compare apples and oranges.
xqyz··on I can't make this stuff up
While I agree that mediocre can be "good enough" (e.g. I don't see any reason to buy high end headphones, when I am perfectly happy with ~150 Euro ones), I think this should always be a decision made consciously, not one born out of stupidity or ignorance.

If those people don't require any of the things that make a "Samsung iPad" different than the Apple one, then fine, go save a few bucks, but don't chose it because you just assume that it's all the same.

xqyz··on How installing & managing apps should have been on Windows 7
That actually does look better, thanks for showing.
xqyz··on Gnome 3.6 first impressions | Simply Beautiful
To the unschooled eye that hasn't seen Gnome since 3.0, this looks just as ugly as it did when it was released.
xqyz··on How installing & managing apps should have been on Windows 7
Chrome's Webstore[1] is even uglier imho, but yeah as far as package managers go I wouldn't want to use it to be honest. The whole Windows 8 style on XP doesn't help either.

xqyz··on How would you improve Hacker News?
Any reason why this discussion should not be held inside of hacker news instead of on a third party website?
xqyz··on Vim and Vi Tips: Essential Vim and Vi Editor Skills, free on Amazon today only
I did that and it is actually incredibly easy to get used to (within a couple of hours). The bigger thing you have to get used to -- and which I suspect most will struggle with -- is not moving around when in insert mode.
xqyz··on Vim and Vi Tips: Essential Vim and Vi Editor Skills, free on Amazon today only
You could try the kindle app for your computer/phone/tablet. I like reading books on my iPhone on my daily commute and it's quite nice (except for some technical books where the source code formatting is obviously quite bad with the small screen).
xqyz··on Vim and Vi Tips: Essential Vim and Vi Editor Skills, free on Amazon today only
I'm also pretty new to vim (well at least using it seriously, for a quick config edit I've been using it for ages as it beats having to use nano).

I love reading other people's vimrc as I usually always find something new that I'm willing to try out. Mine is here in case someone wants to take a look: https://github.com/PatrickLerner/dotfiles/blob/master/vimrc

xqyz··on Why Facebook comments is a bad idea for your site
Same site from the link in the article (http://labs.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/08/post-1.php):

> Now the downsides, which are probably determinative for us. First, quite simply a lot of people don’t trust Facebook for reasons that range from quite reasonable to totally paranoid. Second, and more significant in my mind, is that many people don’t want to bring their true identities into the comments section of a political site. [...]

> For those two reasons, especially the second, we’re probably never going to do this.

It's like "yeah we know people probably won't like it, but fuck them."

xqyz··on Why Facebook comments is a bad idea for your site
Indeed. Even if I had, I doubt I would care to sign in just to post a comment.
xqyz··on Why Facebook comments is a bad idea for your site
Or to the internet in general.
xqyz··on Mozilla removes -moz-opacity; man threatens to sue for $18,000
> We just create visually appealing, informative and Evangelical websites since AD 1997. - YHWH

emphasis mine.

xqyz··on Which distros to start Linux with
Honestly, the article seems rather pointless to me. The kind of people who don't know what a bootloader is should probably not be using Arch Linux or Slackware. Not to mention that at least Arch Linux has a far more detailed and better official documentation, so experienced users who like to try out Arch would probably be much happier with that.
xqyz··on App.net is Dreaming Small
Did you even read what he wrote? They DON'T aim for any such amount of people using it.
xqyz··on Transform Ubuntu 12.04 Into Mac OS X Lion
It looks pretty much the same as these Mac Transformation Kits they had for Windows a few years back. Anybody who ever used a Mac can clearly see that this ain't it. IMHO it pretty clearly fails in delivering what it promised, but if you like this half-mac, half-unity style, I guess you might like this.
xqyz··on Ask HN: Where is the Hostility on HN Coming From?
I kind of disagree. I think there would have been better ways to present a design. For startes it would have been nice to know why specific decisions were made instead of just "we thought it was prettier".

Maybe usability studies, A/B test results and if at all possible some form of prototype, even if it is just static.

Plus the article lacks consideration for mobile and small screen platform (i.e. considering edge cases). In fact I'd go as far as to say it actively disregards them by choosing gigantic fonts and lots of useless whitespace in favor of useful content.

xqyz··on Ask HN: Where is the Hostility on HN Coming From?
I agree, even as a submitter I'd rather people would comment -- even if it's just to criticise -- than if everybody is too polite to say anything. This way, I think everybody can profit from it.
xqyz··on With great sadness we announce the closing of Fluent.io
> Email is quite clearly a thing that needs fixing

Honestly, I've never seen it that way. Email continues to work fine. It's platform independent and easy to use/setup. It's probably one of the best things on the internet ever.

xqyz··on Google Chrome's biggest annoyance: Download bar
Safari's expanding download button is a lot better than the download bar. Ideally I'd prefer it if you could just disable it and it would open the download window in a background tab instead.
