xorfish··on DeepSeek V4 Flash on a Single AMD MI300X
This is still quite a bit away from the performance that deepseek gets on their H800. In their DSpark paper they report a throughput of 15k tokens/s/gpu. The MI300 should be able to compete with the H800 so there are probably still quite a few optimizations that can be made.

If the US were serious about road safety, they would change the roads and streets to be more safe and tax 1500+ kg vehicles into oblivion.
xorfish··on Why Does America Provide More Space for Storing Cars Than Housing People?
Suburbs are highly subsidized. The quality of life only seems to outcompete cities because the quality of life in cities is lowered by the car centric culture.

If you want to know how good the QoL in a city can be, you need to visit a European city that is not car centric.

xorfish··on More green spaces linked to slower biological aging
Cars are generally not a mode of transport that makes sense in a city. There are some exceptions, but the vast majority of transportation in a city should be by foot, bicycle or public transport.
xorfish··on If You Double-Park and You’re Rich, Should You Pay a Higher Fine?
Car dependence imposes a huge cost on the poor. With good public transportation and bicycle infrastructure, poor people wouldn't need a car.

Reducing car dependence is a good thing for the poor.

xorfish··on If You Double-Park and You’re Rich, Should You Pay a Higher Fine?
That is how you get to the current state of car dependence in the US.

Parking costs a lot. It should not be subsidized.

xorfish··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
You still have to pay the interest on the loan.

If your bond 10y bond you bought two years ago pays 1.5% and you need to take on a loan at 3.5% for 8 years to be liquid, then you are still around 16% in the red. You will find that this is also roughly what the market will discount the bonds.

xorfish··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
No, that is not true.

Selling the bonds now at their current valuation or taking on debt and hold them to maturity lead to roughly equivalent outcomes.

The MtM losses are real.

xorfish··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
> So the obvious and sensible thing to do is have the government lend money to cover the time until the bonds mature, in addition to using the FDIC's money which did not come from public funds.

The cost of the loans should be in the same ballpark as the losses on the long term bonds.

I think it is wrong to value the well-being of some humans more than others.

Of course humans change. A state machine can also change state. Doesn't mean that a state machine has control over their behavior.

> Perhaps the better conclusion is that "free will" is merely our ability to alter our own biochemical state

But isn't our ability to alter our own biochemical state dependent on our current biochemical state?

At the very core of criminal justice rests an assumption, that is false.

> The concept of criminal justice rests on the fundamental principle that we are responsible for our own behavior.

Human behavior is the result of lots of factors, none of which they have control over. evolution, culture, prenatal environment, uprising and more shape human behavior and what they want and need. This is true for good as well as bad behavior.

I think this is fitting in that context:

Schindler's List | "I Didn't Do Enough"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9vj2Wf57rQ

In the end, nearly everyone values their life higher than the life of others. The more distant that the "others" are the less we value them.
