xook··on Show HN: While painting this, I had nothing in mind
Nowhere on that website was there a "blanket statement" about all art. They said "I believe," not "It is stated fact."

I also share the opinion that having no interpretation can be either or since often I have no interpretation outside of "it looks neat" for something that later I find out has deep meaning for the author that is shared by others. I don't personally see it, but that's what I think.

xook··on U.S. FAA closes some airspace in Montana for Defense Department activities
Not OP, but I tend to use multiple sources via RSS. Iirc, Live Science covered the laser Hawaii one, and then the balloon stuff I either see on [there], here, or on social media elsewhere (or through friends).

RSS is the primary candidate through it all, though. Keeps everything relatively organized.

xook··on Ask HN: How did you find your current job?
At the risk of not fitting into the conventional HN profile, the pandemic got me my current job. They were desperately needing to fill positions, and they were the only ones who would give me an interview.

Kinda stings to think about it happening that way, but it's work that isn't dread-inducing, so I'll take it :)

xook··on GoldWave Open Source Goal
Same thing for Firefox on Android, it seems.
xook··on Ask HN: Anyone else is tired of all the corporate bs?
What flavor of bs would that be? I have no experience with, but aside from the usual "pay your own everything" and taxes, it seems like an alright place to be. I could also be very, or conditionally, wrong.
xook··on Ask HN: What do you do for a living?
Run of the mill lab tech. Wish I had the privilege of remote work so I could focus on family instead of being gone for 10+ hours a day.

But that's a dream for other people who know how to make it happen. I take work where I can get it.

xook··on Ask HN: Which important problem are you working on?
Personal/financial success issue:

Trying to figure out my life. I work a job I'm starting to hate because it's dead-end, but it pays well for what it is. Mentally exhausting though.

I haven't had time anymore to find something else, and to make it worse, it's not tech-related (in a broad sense, not just FAANG).

I'm kind of stuck where I am for a bit, but it pays the bills. I don't want extravagant, I just want a small place, far out of the way. Not into the "Van Life" thing though.

xook··on Premature Blogging Death Notice
It's likely Rule 34 in this context has been reimagined as, "Someone cares just as much about $thing as you to [...]"

Other than that, yes, the original R34 version applies somewhere in the abyss.

xook··on Premature Blogging Death Notice
What one may call "stale" I might call fun and interesting. That website certainly applies; I always enjoy seeing nice little places like that with an Old Web look!
xook··on A 1980s space telescope may have seen planet nine
Would have commented this same thing. It should be a matter of translating the coordinates into a search pattern to look at with JWST.
xook··on Porting Doom to a USB Bluetooth Dongle
I would ask "Is there a BSDoom?" but this[0] might qualify.

xook··on Restic – Backups Done Right
It doesn't have to be one or the other. The GUI would be for one-off or intermittent usage, and the CLI program would still come in as the primary tool for scripting or recurring use.
xook··on Debit cards are hidden financial infrastructure
What would classify as a private bank? IME, you're given the option for overdrafts regardless.
xook··on Microsoft and the Metaverse
On one hand, I am of the laughing crowd. On the other, I have to wonder if there is something I (we?) are missing if these highly paid marketers and engineers are going after it.

Surely it's not so shortsighted as to be about a few (<10) percent in investments? There has to be a longer term plan if not that. Maybe I am wrong.

At the end of the day, I'm standing back, wondering which fire will blow out first.

xook··on How I got wealthy without working too hard
Fellow "boring old town" member here. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Far away from me are the trivialities and concerns of concrete monoliths. I much prefer being able to walk outside on my own, and see open fields and forests where ever I turn.

Maybe I'm not an exception, but there are more than a few people who don't need much in life. A wood cabin in the mountains with 802.11 and solar power is all I need.

xook··on Ask HN: What are some technically inspiring movies, TV shows or documentaries?
> If motivation were a battery you wouldn't try to recharge it and use it at the same time. It might get you a little more uptime but the stress leads to early failure.

Thank you for this. I've not thought of it in that way, but it is very accurate.

xook··on Thank you, GitHub
Shortest version might be:
xook··on Fedora 35
If I may ask, why not switch to another distro? Are those particular add-ons useful, or is it inertia?
xook··on Meadowlark, a DAW written in Rust
Genuine question: How many are written in Rust?

Maybe it's more "See, Rust can, too!" type software?

Footnote: I have not done extensive research, hence the question.

xook··on ProjectM – The most advanced open-source music visualizer
> projectM is an open-source project that reimplements the esteemed Winamp Milkdrop

I thought these visuals looked familiar. At first I thought it might have been based on a library used by MD, but this is much better news.

xook··on Hackernews.com
When I first found out about Hacker News, but saw the domain (news.ycombinator.com), I had to make sure I wasn't on the wrong website.

After all, it was discovery from a Torvalds Q&A session.

xook··on Hackernews.com
That's been my primary motivator behind "I read it online/on a forum," vs "I read it on news DOT why combinator DOT com."

The other reason is that I'd prefer not to navigate the conversation toward "why I'm on a website with 'Hacker' in the name." That's a separate issue for which I am ill-equipped to discuss, given the mainstream connotation.

xook··on Android phones are sending significant amount of user data with no opt-out [pdf]
How is Pinephone coming along toward this year's end?

I check in every now and then, but I need it to be where current Lineage/Graphene are. I don't need trivial software (games et al), but I need it to be automatic enough* that I don't have to spend an evening or weekend unbreaking things – and reliable all the same.

* barring basic things like package manager updates

xook··on Moths in slow motion [video]
Quite the missed opportunity for "slow mothtion"!
xook··on The code worked differently when the moon was full
Is there a database or "online myth/story" archive of wacky bugs like this and in the comments? These would make for great "cocoa at night" reading!
xook··on The Alternate Universe of Soviet Arcade Games (2015)
title needs (2015)
xook··on A case against syntax highlighting (2007)
I went to find the video where I first heard him say something about syntax highlighting is for kindergartners https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0EF0VTs9Dc&t=899

It's an unfortunate comment since I struggle with word salad most days. Being able to skim and find certain blocks or aspects of a source file is preferable if I can't remember the name of something right away.

xook··on Space station astronaut captures breathtaking view of the edge of the Earth
Cute and fun, but also very real if you're a CPU: https://0.30000000000000004.com/
xook··on Web3 is a stupid idea
Post's date has 2020, but it also says Sept. 8th, therefore I ask: Is this exactly one year old, or a date error?
xook··on OpenWrt 21.02.0 Released
Been running OpenWRT on routers for the better part of 5+ years now. I'm not crazy about some of the software being very minimal[0], and it sometimes takes a few tries[1], but it runs quite well on a Linksys 1900ac. Time for a weekend upgrade!

[0] Dropbear doesn't {didn't?} support ed25519 at the time I was using it for SSH, but it took me an afternoon of dead ends and "it's not DNS" feelings before I found that out.

[1] I know about the serial console, but I'd prefer a simple, direct access keyboard/mouse setup if I screw it up.
