xlm1717··on Not a Black Chair: racism, sexism, and discrimination at Squarespace
Maybe people are getting tired of being told what to get angry about.
xlm1717··on Painkillers now kill more Americans than any illegal drug
I think it's a big issue in the US because of how easy it is to obtain. Anecdotally, I have talked with people in foreign countries (I'm from the US) who say it's much harder to obtain Vicodin even with prescription. I know one who had to steal Vicodin from the doctor's office where they did clerical work because they had insomnia that had not responded to any medication they were prescribed. If they were easier to obtain abroad, I imagine other countries could have as big an issue with painkillers as the US does, and as the article says one of the main reasons painkillers were so easy to obtain in the US is the push within the medical and pharmaceutical industries to treat pain.
xlm1717··on The Mystery of When to Stop Antidepressants
Keeping the customer addicted is good for business.
xlm1717··on Why I will never use Windows 8/10
A lot of those I don't see as something that is Windows' problem. If your computer performance degrades over time to the point that you have to reinstall every year to purge cruft, maybe it's something to do with that habit you mentioned of installing things at some point?

Also, running on an SSD I don't have to do disk defragmentation anymore either.

xlm1717··on Imagined design for a faster-than-light spaceship
It briefly touches on it, but the idea is to use something called an "Alcubierre drive". Obviously in an article aimed at the layman they won't go into a deep explanation about how such a drive would work, but they do say the first thing they need is an existence proof. This is still very theoretical and it's likely that it's not physically possible to do.
xlm1717··on Russian crowdfunded reflector satellite aims to be “brightest star in the sky”
I hope this idea literally never gets off the ground. If one person/company gets approval to go ahead, there will be no end to the people/companies seeking approval, and there goes ground-based astronomy.
xlm1717··on Why isn't anyone calling out Yelp's CEO
>and quite self righteous

Perhaps people aren't calling out the Yelp CEO because they are getting tired of participating in the internet's self-righteous rage mob.

xlm1717··on Stephen Hawking confirms: The problem is Capitalism, not robots
Interesting that all this discussion has started up based purely on a headline. The site that is linked to is borderline conspiracy theory stuff, and nomoba has been hard at work pushing it on HN over the past few days.
xlm1717··on Yelp Fired a Single Mother Today: Me
You have to wonder if Yelp did something to anger someone higher up that they're being bashed repeatedly in public.
xlm1717··on The dominance of baby boomers is becoming total
From my vantage point in the US, it does seem like a significant number of young people do want change. I'm basing this on the contrast between Bernie Sanders supporters, largely young people, and Hillary Clinton supporters, who have a lot less young people than Bernie supporters. As for what change young people want today, I'd say it's what Bernie is campaigning for, which does include health care but also free college for all, among other things that primarily concern young people.
xlm1717··on The Node.js Event Loop Is a Damn Mess
The author briefly touches on what the author doesn't like about the event loop. I think it helps to learn more about how the event loop works in JS:

A possibly helpful module which gives you multithreading options is threads a gogo:

xlm1717··on The Elephant in the Room: Web design work is drying up
Yes, I'm sure we would all love to go back to the days where our access to the internet was limited by a gatekeeper who insisted we only need their services, and told us wanting a billion websites was madness.
xlm1717··on The peril of talking to normal people
I would say the problem with the psych, in the article at least, is not so much they don't deal with precise language, but that they deal with precise, and rigid, protocols. The psych didn't take the time to clarify because the protocol (probably) was, if a patient shows any risk (no matter how small, apparently) to self-harm, put them in the hospital.

Instead of being pedantic about language, the psych is being pedantic about protocol.

xlm1717··on This is the most depressing chart in the world
If you stop the growth, there will be more rat racing. Our current level of growth isn't sustainable because at best it's flat, at worst it's trending downward. This will lead to even more stress, depression, etc., even worse quality of production. Sure, people will have more time, but they will be too desperate to take the time to adapt to new paradigms. And try getting someone to worry about the environment when they are already worrying about making rent.
xlm1717··on This is the most depressing chart in the world
That doesn't look depressing. That looks unreservedly optimistic.
xlm1717··on Break Up the Insulin Racket
The insurance system is itself a racket. Putting even more people into the insurance system only makes insurance companies richer, doesn't do much for the average American.
xlm1717··on [dead]
The article is a month old and Fiorina already dropped out of the race. What's the point of bringing this up now?
xlm1717··on Silicon Valley tech worker fired after blogging about starving
More judgment would not make it a better world.
xlm1717··on Civilization: 25 years, 33M copies sold, 1B hours played, and 66 versions
It's not that difficult. You just need to have something another civ wants, and trade them for their vote on an issue. Also, you can form your own voting bloc by allying city-states.
xlm1717··on Scientists are floored by what’s happening in the Arctic right now
>We may look back on this moment as the start of a runaway greenhouse effect.

Sensationalist, scaremonger much?

xlm1717··on Scientists are floored by what’s happening in the Arctic right now
All of their headlines in the Most Read sidebar are obvious clickbait. It really is such a shame.
xlm1717··on SEC Suspends Deutsche Bank Research Analyst for “Not Meaning What He Said”
Strange phrasing used by the SEC. Would be better to say they charged the analyst with cronyism.
xlm1717··on How to win an online argument: lessons from Reddit
With regards to groupthink, one of the recommendations is to use the power of groups to convince somebody:

>Respond in groups

xlm1717··on Under-35s in the UK face becoming permanent renters, warns thinktank
>Florida makes its money primarily from income tax.

You sure? I haven't had state income tax taken out of my pay check in... forever. I'm assuming you meant to type real estate/property tax, though.

xlm1717··on Why I love Node.js
That sh execute a script you download over the internet without checking it first is something. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry, but -

>Stop. That. Shit.

You ok?

xlm1717··on VCs, don't compare me to your wife
> When you ask me about having it all, or how am I going to manage my kids, I seriously think that you are insane. Because in my head, I can’t imagine a scenario where you trust someone with millions of dollars to run a business but think that they don’t know how to deal with childcare.

Is that not why they ask the question then?? If they don't think someone can handle childcare, then the author is right, they won't trust that person with millions of dollars.

xlm1717··on Aldehyde-Stabilized Cryopreservation Procedure Wins Brain Preservation Prize
Dying is already expensive enough without cryopreservation.
xlm1717··on What Is the Self? It Depends
>Begin with numbing the bodily senses, then proceed to blind the mind's eye, and then stifle the voice of your thoughts. These won't actually go away, of course, but you will realize without them that your experience is nothing more than the sum of these parts. There is no 'disembodied' consciousness. You are a stream of sensations.

If these won't actually go away, how will you realize something without them?

xlm1717··on Is There a Libertarian Case for Bernie Sanders?
In this case, you can't argue that it's not right.

>The libertarian case for Bernie Sanders is simply that Bernie Sanders wants to make America more like Denmark, Canada, or Sweden … and the citizens of those countries enjoy more liberty than Americans do.

So, those countries are more libertarian than the United States, despite imposing top-heavy government on its people with the goal of taking a sizeable percentage of their income. Right...

In any case, the author himself then seems to conclusively answer No, without explicitly saying "no":

>The lesson Bernie Sanders needs to learn is that you cannot finance a Danish-style welfare state without free markets and large tax increases on the middle class. If you want Danish levels of social spending, you need Danish middle-class tax rates and a relatively unfettered capitalist economy. The fact that he’s unwilling to come out in favor of either half of the Danish formula for a viable social-democratic welfare state is the best evidence that Bernie Sanders is not actually very interested in what it takes to make social democracy work. The great irony of post-1989 political economy is that capitalism has proven itself the most reliable means to socialist ends. Bernie seems not to have gotten the memo.

If you buy the author's argument that Denmark's brand of democratic socialism is the closest to the libertarian ideal we have in the world, then the logical conclusion is that Bernie doesn't understand what makes Denmark's brand of democratic socialism work, so there is no libertarian case for Bernie Sanders.
