xlaacid··on Theses on Sleep
This essay, convinced me that people with no domain specific knowledge can cherry-pick ideas to support any BS they want
xlaacid··on Ask HN: Messed up my education, now 30 and regretting it. What to do?
"The only thing that interferes with my learning, is my education"- Einstein.
xlaacid··on Ask HN: Why aren't there other biographies of Steve Jobs?
three words: user experience design. Windows designs tools and Apple designs experiences for its users. This is coming from someone who has only owned a G4 laptop from Apple. Im not a huge consumer of their ecosystem.
xlaacid··on Ask HN: What was it like to use BBS?
so slow. But, you had to be able to write and communicate well- no emojis, no gifs. My first internet experience was a BBS a friend setup. He gave me a free account. Looking back, the internet was so small then. And, as others of noted, the phone issue- I timed almost all connections after my family went to sleep to avoid being disconnected from my 1200 baud modem.
xlaacid··on Ask HN: Tips for more energy during day?
if you live with someone, ask if they hear you snoring or choking at night while you sleep. If so, go tell your doctor and ask if you might have sleep apnea. One of the most common signs is daytime drowsiness.
xlaacid··on Interview with Charlie Munger on Controversial UCSB Dorm
Those are prison cells, period. The fact that they don't have natural sunlight means Munger doesn't have the first clue about circadian biology and how light affects the brain, mood, wakefulness, and sleep. This is a great example of how people with extreme wealth are given carte blanche simply because they have money, and no brains. As a former architectural student, albeit, high school, and professional sleep researcher (12 yrs), I hope this never gets built.
xlaacid··on Blue light from monitors no danger to eyes or sleep
This site is garbage. I downloaded the article and the only mention of blue light and sleep is "the authors concluded that high-quality clinical trials are required to achieve clarity". As for their claims of blue light blocking, read their limitations section.
xlaacid··on Linux Phones [are less secure than mainstream Android]
While most of this article can be argued to be true, they missed a key point of early adoption of linux phones- privacy. They forgot to mention how both Ios/Android are less private than the linux phone. Also, they should have delineated between security, privacy, and anonymity to be clear on what point they were trying to make. Poorly written at best.
xlaacid··on Covid Is a Social Construct
such conspiracy garbage
xlaacid··on [dead]
this is anti-VAX rhetoric. Somebody flag this crap.
xlaacid··on One Year in Hell (2013)
This is some kinda prepper/conspiracy nut website
xlaacid··on Massachusetts health notifications app installed without users’ knowledge
update: just checked my wife's phone and there was a notification asking if you want to be part of the exposure notification. Clicked NO and checked the apps- the app was already installed even though I said no. Epic fail for MA gov.
xlaacid··on Massachusetts health notifications app installed without users’ knowledge
The problem is that you dont opt in to COVID-19 exposure notifications. It was enable by default. I disabled it as soon as I found it.I just checked for the app and its not installed on my phone.
xlaacid··on Early detection of skin cancer at home at the price of a smart watch
I think what they want is an independent, double-blind study, using your device that show statistical significance detecting malignant moles.
xlaacid··on Ask HN: How can I read faster?
Please don't read faster. One negative thing that technology and the faced-paced-life, in general, has brought us is a world full of skimmers. We read snippets and think we know something. Reading for pleasure is another story, but you specifically asked about "building onto the knowledge of people". Makes me think that you want to learn, or add to your understanding of something. In that case, take the time to really, read and critically think about what you are reading. side note: keep a notepad and pen with you and write down your thoughts on what you're reading for later reflection. You wont truly "know" something until after you have read it, thought about the material, and placed into a context that you can relate to. Good Luck
xlaacid··on Ask HN: Is abuse from supervisors as common in industry as in academia?
My experience, in both domains, is that Academia is the worst system for abuse. It is setup to protect professors and not students. I'm glad in the US that graduate students, in some states, have unionized. Hopefully, this will begin to tip the balance.
xlaacid··on Ask HN: Best sleep trackers?
None. Period. I was in human sleep research for 14 years as a technologist and proj manager. I tested dozens and dozens of devices- a mattress pad that claimed to track sleep. None of them are accurate.

to track limb movements you need EMG attached to your legs and then to a recorder. Then a sleep tech certified in scoring must review the results.

A board certified sleep doctor can get you home devices to track periodic limb movement if necessary.

Acti-watches are the only devices that you might be able to get "accurate" sleep(not limbs)tracking. They're expensive and you need to buy analysis software to view results. I would not waste your money on any publicly available device- they wont get you the data you want.

xlaacid··on Ask HN: Not resting fully because can't sleep long enough
limit caffeine, find the best time to go to bed and keep to it, for the stress; have a notebook by your bed and write down all the things you need to do the next day- now they're not in your head. here for more sleep tips-https://www.sleepfoundation.org/articles/sleep-hygiene

from a former sleep researcher

xlaacid··on Ask HN: How to make An Android phone more private and secure
Thanks! I forgot to mention im on a pixel 3a. The only custom ROM I've found is GrapheneOS and its still a bit raw.
xlaacid··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of CLI programs you install on linux
Thanks. I tried this on my Fedora 29 workstation but it returned nothing.
xlaacid··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of CLI programs you install on linux
Thanks. I hadnt thought of this. The problem is it returns everthing. Im wodering if there is some way to grep and identifier. I guess I should just keep a list in my notes app.
xlaacid··on Ask HN: Which Laptop models would you recommend for a developer using Linux?
Question; does the pen work with the linux install?
