xkcdfanboy··on Poll: Full-time software engineers in London, what's your annual salary?
We really need unions. These polls only help so much. Unfortunately also, there are both retard programmers, and actual programmers. I worked with a retard programmer, he thought that learning Django was a feat of strength...sigh..when I told him about OOP he almost shit his pants.
xkcdfanboy··on Can anyone explain why Ruby is so popular?
It's interesting that the two responses on here (yours included) so far mention that it was learned for scripting. The main reason I made the initial post is because I see it being used for much more than just scripting, ie. rails and ruby motion. It seems somewhat naive to use a scripting language in leui of a real language when coding something industrial. So I still am at a loss... Thank you for your comment, yeah it does seem a lot more powerful than Python. I am not a fan of python's requirement of object methods requiring the self arg, dastardly!
xkcdfanboy··on My takeaways from "Clean Code"
Don’t Pass Null? This is idiotic if you want performant code and don't want to have to use static empty object constants littered throughout your code.

Null is perfectly fine in place of an object. The author mentions this saves you debugging time. No, it will cause you pain later because you won't see errors that should happen. Instead they are masked by operating on some dummy object that you don't give a rats ass about.

xkcdfanboy··on Pure: a set of small, responsive CSS modules
It won't make a difference if you use the library correctly. You're supposed to use a framework like sass or stylus and @extend from the grid classes. Don't actually give your elements classes from the lib. This is a rookie mistake I see happening with bootstrap, grid 960, etc..
xkcdfanboy··on 37 YC Companies have valuations of or been sold for at least $40 Million
Wait hold on. I'm doing an evaluation of Rap Genius so I can cure cancer.
xkcdfanboy··on 37 YC Companies have valuations of or been sold for at least $40 Million
The circle jerk never stops, does it? Anyone want to post the visualization of various amounts of cash that front paged a couple months ago?

This kind of blind worship of money makes hackers look like wise-guy could-have-been doctors but instead were lazy and decided to make a business around popular markets for some dollars.

xkcdfanboy··on The future of CAD and 3D printing will arm citizens
It's not hard to add a rifling to the model is it? It seems like they are prototyping, testing, and incrementing designs.
xkcdfanboy··on Teacher 'powerless' to stop ex-girlfriend's cyberstalking
Cyberskanking is a new breed of social terrorism. And now, Bob with the weather...
xkcdfanboy··on Coinlab files suit against MtGox
So much for a socratic free Internet. Someone should make a hacker news without censorship
xkcdfanboy··on Coinlab files suit against MtGox
If you haven't seen censorship on HN, you haven't looked hard enough. I've seen whole threads disappear for nothing more than meta-(calling out the censorship).
xkcdfanboy··on Show HN: Felt – Personal, handwritten cards mailed from your iPad
He can tout that all he wants, recipients of cards aren't going to be giving direct feedback and the sender is going to be thanked regardless. Having 'made with iPad' cheapens the card anyhow, throw your brand on it, and stop being greedy.
xkcdfanboy··on Fallback from CDN to local jQuery
Yes, that first method is hideous. Async is a necessary speedup and the `if (jQuery) ` slaughters that optimization.
xkcdfanboy··on Show HN: Felt – Personal, handwritten cards mailed from your iPad
As novel as this app is, I agree. The only market I can see this app appealing to is teeny boppers that have no sense of etiquette.

What this app needs is a way to _design_ your own card, so there actually is a reason to have it digitally created. Think clipart + calligraphy with custom papers/stipling. Now you've got a real product.

xkcdfanboy··on Show HN: Felt – Personal, handwritten cards mailed from your iPad
I think he was implying that the functionality of Paper is far greater, not the visual similarity -- Freudian slip on your part I suppose ;)
xkcdfanboy··on Show HN: Felt – Personal, handwritten cards mailed from your iPad
If the whole point is to disguise the effort spent, 'from my iPad' kills that premise.

You are essentially sacrificing your product's value for word of mouth.

xkcdfanboy··on How the FBI cracked a “sextortion” plot against pro poker players
I'd like to think that the smarter hackers realize that good-willed work can make just as much money, if not more, than blackhat bullshit, and there aren't any victims either.

They both got what they deserved, and it's more than laughable that their tracks were so clear. If you're going to be committing fraud, at least learn some shellcode first. Gotta start with the basics before you go baaaad ;)

xkcdfanboy··on How to become Internet famous for $68
I thought he was a pretty good speaker but I do see what you are saying. Considering that there's no real audience, it seems like he's not trying to fool anyone, it's just to give an idea of his skills as a speaker, it's a resume piece.
xkcdfanboy··on What does one trillion dollars look like?
Because a majority of asshat startup fanatics are also money fanatics. Let's face it, most of the reason people want to do startups, it because they have dreams of grandeur.

And I agree, it is extremely embarrassing that this money article would be vote up by HN users.

xkcdfanboy··on Hacking strength: Gaining muscle with least resistance

xkcdfanboy··on PostgreSQL as Schemaless Database [pdf]
Same here, don't feel bad.

And to the downvoters, the correct word is aschematic or schema-less with a dash.

If a word ends in a vowel, you must use a dash.

Hatless is fine, but scrupleless should be scruple-less. The more you know, you scruple-less bastards!

xkcdfanboy··on Skycons: ten animated weather icons, generated by JS using the HTML5 canvas
Why canvas and not SVG? The code is gross, I know you mention it in the comments. It definitely affects who will use your library. If someone is sane about a consistent clean codebase, they would never use this lib. Cool idea and execution though, not trying to knock you.
xkcdfanboy··on 9 Year-Old Raising Money to Attend RPG Camp
Getting huge amounts of money from an online campaign rather than working for it via contract work? Seems like a way to spoil a child.
xkcdfanboy··on 9 Year-Old Raising Money to Attend RPG Camp
Kickstarter is really not the place for these things. The mother should just chock it up and pay for the camp, no need to create a campaign -- it looks like the camp was already paid for in the first place. I don't like people asking for charity when they don't need it. The girls already got a kindle and a mac, more than I had, a shitty 386 and 14.4kb modem when I started out.
xkcdfanboy··on Infringement of 9Gag's trademark [pdf]
I'd say you should keep the app up and change some of the names. You did them a huge favor by creating an app and they give you some contrived robotic response? Fuck them. They thrive on stolen content anyhow, it's not like they have much of a leg to stand on.
xkcdfanboy··on Critical PRNG Bug in NetBSD Kernel
Just in case anyone is curious, the error was having `sizeof(key - r)` instead of `sizeof(key) - r`

Rookie mistake!

xkcdfanboy··on How PHP's foreach works
I can't count the times that references have caused wierd errors in my PHP code. Definitely a good recommendation.
xkcdfanboy··on Building A Paid App For Firefox OS
Not when you can easily just hijack the receipt methods. A lot easier than IAT hooking..lol
xkcdfanboy··on 3D Real-time Unigine Crypt demo (WebGL)
I'm suspect about how there are no movement controls. It's all prescripted. There aren't any physics either. Not impressive.
