xkbarkar··on Debunking common myths about the Autobahn
When we get to intelligent highways and self driving cars I wonder how much difference various speed limits make. In the Nordics Ive seen discussions to go from 130 to 110 because of climate.

Will self driving electric cars be trusted to drive as fast as the construction of the road plus population density permits?

xkbarkar··on Apple to move 40-45% iPhone production to India
Not slaughering your own food is a pretty recent thing and still how common in a large part of the world. Seems like a comment from an innocent kid this one.
xkbarkar··on Sperm counts worldwide are plummeting faster than we thought
I also wonder if obesity is also a result of this.
xkbarkar··on Sperm counts worldwide are plummeting faster than we thought
Those two are not mutually exclusive
xkbarkar··on Being fatter than Homer Simpson
Id say its not the lack of empathy that you feel, but maybe the non trivial effort to normalize morbid obesity that is met with hostility.

We should not celebrate morbid obesity as normal and beautiful.

We gain nothing from villanizing people that suffer from it either.

I personally have never suffered obesity but as the years go on, my body seems to want to put a ludicrous amount of fat in places it never used to. I maintain muscle mass by regular resistance training mixed with cardio and HIIT and that helps a lot with the otherwize natural loss of muscle over 40. Personally this is where excercise definetly helps me.

Also now at 50, I dont have insulin resistance or high blood pressure as many of my fellow 50 year olds are falling prey to.

Even the healthy weight 50 year olds around me are starting blood pressure medication. This is where I beleive the excercise regime I follow has worked wonders. Not so much for weight loss as many seem to think.

It gets harder every year though to maintain physique and low body fat.

Excercise has tremendous benefits for your health and looks but for great weight loss is a matter of nutrition and what particular combo suits your body, economy and culture.

xkbarkar··on Jeffrey Epstein documents to be unsealed, potentially revealing acquaintances
No, then it never happened….
xkbarkar··on No cure for loneliness
No I disagree. Northern Europe naturally fall into loneliness with their culture combined with dependency on the state. Family grouos are small and people are easily siloed. Once you start a family of your own its not uncommon to lose almost all relation with anyone else outside your partner and children.

Troublemakers ( as in physically and/or mentally Ill ) are handed off to the government. The government are also responsible for helping you take care of the children and make ends meet financially.

Making it less necessary to maintain connection with family and friends. And so everyone silos up.

For better or for worse Id argue that socialism has very much contributed to loneliness in northern europe. Not American influence. This problem predates the internet and smartphones.

xkbarkar··on Elizabeth Holmes is sentenced to more than 11 years for fraud
I cant figure out why this comment is so heavily downvoted. Its neither reactive nor innacurate. Can someone elaborate?
xkbarkar··on Elizabeth Holmes is sentenced to more than 11 years for fraud
No. That was the ultimate plan but it never really got to that point.
xkbarkar··on Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research
Only a matter of time until the metrics of carbon foot print of the food industry are proven to be based on shoddy research too I suppose.
xkbarkar··on 'It's so liberating': The people quitting social media
not sure why you are downvoted. These platforms are social media. I font feel criticizing or mentioning reddit breaks the HN rules.
xkbarkar··on Barilla passive cooker
Agreed. Saw similar tacticts during the bank crash in 2018 Blame was shifted to all the peasants byuing flat screen tvs.

Please dont participate in this co-dependent blame shift. Cook your pasta as you like and force media tp hold the real culprits accountable. Yesterday there was a thread on coal used to generate energy in various parts of the world. We could start by focusing attention to finance greener sources there.

Yeah I know, I sound like a hopeful hippie.

xkbarkar··on Shanghai Disney shuts: Visitors unable to leave without negative Covid test
According research (just google is and look at the actual papers and the data set in them and how it was calculated), with the exception of properly worn high grade medical PPE, neither does masking. Universal masking is little more than pointless hysterical hype. Flimsy reused surgical masks, bandanas and home made cloth masks only look f-good in mathematical projections, never in the actual real world results. No I am not posting research, look at it yourself, the ones posting any benefit come from mannequin head studies and mathematical results based on mathematical models from various lab projections.

Universal masking is actually embarrassingly ineffective.

Properly worn PPE ( like done in hospitals, takes 10 minutes to put on and will leave a mark on your face ) and Hazmats work pretty well though.

The shitty disposable surgical mask from slave labourers in india that you have kept in your pocket for 6 months does fuck all.

xkbarkar··on The Restaurant Industry’s Worst Idea: QR Code Menus
Reminds me of those messenger restaurants in Sweden. You have to have messenger installed and then you roder, the server comes out with the food and that's the only connection you will have with them. Swedish servers and bartenders and taxi drivers want tips. And they get super pissed if you don't tip them. The espresso house barista never asks for tips, the bartender does and gets mad if you don't tip.

All they have done is bring me a plate of food , zero interaction. Why why why should I tip them? Still pisses me off. I actively avoid restaurants that use this system. Takeouts however I am fine with in this way.

Also , do not tip in Sweden, ever.

xkbarkar··on What’s wrong with medieval pigs in videogames
Oh come on. Fun read.
xkbarkar··on Study: Electroshock therapy more successful for depression than ketamine
No, not even close
xkbarkar··on Study: Electroshock therapy more successful for depression than ketamine
I only know one ECT patient personally but the side effects were horrible enough for me to wonder why it is even legal. The brutality of the treatment and lack of after treatment is astounding.

It's been 12 years since her ECT for post partum depression and she still has memory losses and a completely changed personality (agression is one).

xkbarkar··on Google is shutting down Stadia
I use gmail, photos and youtube, thats it. Pretty much anything from google that I have used in the past has shut down in a few years.

So I dont touch anything new from them at all. Pointless.

Good job google.

xkbarkar··on Italy's right wing, led by Meloni, wins election, exit polls say
If you look at every single precidency pretty awful things were done. Fake child immunization setup to get Usama during Obama administration. Has caused an unveleivable amount of harm to children. Not in cages, just no linger vaccinated for fear of US pursuit.

Yell bad man Trump all you want. He was never the problem, he was a symptom of what is really going on.

Same with Swedish and now Italian elections. Get all the social media upvotes for adhering to the woke and bow to twitter as much as you want.

This is what is actually going on.

I blame super shitty journalism also for this. Thats just a personal irk I have for how oblivious and grossly overconfident and incompetent the media actually is

xkbarkar··on This page is a truly naked, brutalist HTML quine (2019)
cool
xkbarkar··on Plastic might be making us obese
Would it change your perception if you look at overeating as a symptom rather than a cause? A common enough symptom for untreated diabetes is eccessive thirst. Why should some ailments not cause lack of satiety or edcessive hunger. Or even metabolic issues. Complex ones.

Imagine that the basis for the obesity pandemic may in fact lie in other, lack of proper digestive bacteria and yeast for example. I feel that pointing at obesity as just lazyness is just not constructive. I am not obese and have never suffered from it so this is not from a point of self defense. Just a thought.

xkbarkar··on The layoffs at Klarna
Almost reads like a detective story as if not only mass layoffs, but poorly managed ones are unique to Klarna. Feels like the author has not really understood how incredibly common mass layffs as a tool for keeping profit margins really are.

Layoffs sucks no doubt but I cant say I feel as "outraged" as the author seems to intend. My current employer cut 10% of the workforce about 3 years ago (1800 ppl).My preevious one did that twice (about 3500 people in total). Another former employer would cut 2-3% every other month or so. Then go on a hiring spree, and then cut again.

Laying off 5% every year Microsoft style because of a crazy in house performance review system, now thats a news worthy evil story. This is just standard bad management vs profit margin not really interesting.

Yea Sweden, it happened to you too. Welcome to the club.

xkbarkar··on Does the dog die?
I never saw train spotting because someone told me a baby dies of neglect in that movie. I have no personal relation to that specific kind of trauma but I actively avoid movies were babies are killed.

I cant stomach that particuar kind of cruelty. Totally get the need for a list like that.

xkbarkar··on Air France announces end to research monkey transport
C19 vaccine development caused the extreme shortage according to the article. Always a little terrifying that we dont have any good alternatives that animal testing. I do beleive that animals used for medical testing ( at least in the west ) are treated a whole lot better than the poor unfortunates we breed for food. And I dont see anyone declaring the end of transporting those.
xkbarkar··on Nanoparticle vaccine protects against a spectrum of Covid-19-causing variants
Good friend of mine had influenza and is still coughing. Whats your point?
xkbarkar··on The local news crisis is deepening America's divides
Why is the closure of local news considered spurred by the pandemic though??

I personally stopped reading news outlets after the first Trump year. Every single news outlet was full of exactly the same Trump vitriol ( I lean left so, not strange ). And to make it worse, I am not even american in the US.

Why read the exact same opEd in the local and the state news?? At least in my home country, since about 1 year after Trump I pretty much scaled from maybe 5 outlets to 2. Since covid times I read one left and one right ( I used to only read left ) and then subscribe to weekly papers that support investigative journalism. Honestly I feel local news shot themselves in the foot with Trump hysteria.

Or maybe it was already in decline and Trump times just made it that much more evident.

xkbarkar··on Why does iron deficiency cause fatigue, even in the absence of anemia?
Was twitter really the right place for this? Very informational piece, I liked it. But having to read it in 12 sections was awkward. Disclaimer, I already dislike twitter.
xkbarkar··on New California law requires high schools to start later
Amazing how this irritates many. We never had classes before 8.30 ( not US ) when I was a kid. School starting at 7 would have caused an outrage. Parents were generally starting work between 8-9 so dropping of the kid on the way to work makes sense. At 7 most parents would have been an hour early for work which is not awesome for everyone.

How bizarre to read that an entire culture apparently has promoted extraordinary lazy kids for 5 or so decades, because their standard school starting time differs from the US one.

xkbarkar··on Unity employees ‘mad and stressed out’ amidst unexpected layoffs
I think you hit the nail on the head there.
xkbarkar··on DevOps is a failure
Wanted to add, todays pipelines include a whole new level of security that was pretty much ignored in 2005.
