xjwm··on A Uniquely Challenging trivia game built on Chatbase/OpenAI
Very easy to fool. For example, when it asked me "Which city is the capital of Australia?" providing the answer "the capital city of Australia" was judged to be correct. Same when asked about the author of a novel and answering "the author of 'novel'".

I did 7 in a row simply refecting back the question.

xjwm··on Asus refunds Zenfone buyer for failing to provide bootloader unlock tools
You're correct. My other phones were from my wireless carrier, and didn't support unlocking the bootloader, so I had to keep upgrading (over a period of years.) I bought the Zenfone to try to break that cycle. The old devices still function, aside from being outside of vendor support (or in the case of one, incompatible with the carrier's network after infrastructure upgrades.)
xjwm··on Asus refunds Zenfone buyer for failing to provide bootloader unlock tools
I just sent feedback to ASUS expressing my concern at the loss of bootloader unlocking. I have 2 perfectly good cell phones that are e-waste now, simply because the vendor stopped issuing patches, and the bootloader can't be unlocked to use LineageOS. I bought a Zenfone recently because I thought I'd be avoiding that issue. If they don't fix this, I won't be buying another one. ASUS CEO contact page: https://www.asus.com/us/support/article/787/

xjwm··on The book club that spent 28 years reading Finnegans Wake
I've never been able to approach this book in text. I did listen to an abridged audiobook performance of Finnegan's Wake, and enjoyed it in the same way I suppose I would enjoy listening to a foreign language poetry recital.
xjwm··on Cheems, the Shiba Inu meme dog, has died
So sad. Such loss. Wow.
xjwm··on I wrote Task Manager and I just remembered something
The author of that post has a YouTube channel called Dave's Garage[0], and has video series that cover development of Task Manager, Space Cadet Pinball, and others.

xjwm··on Why Conscious AI Is a Bad, Bad Idea
The quote above is from the book 1984. I felt it fit.
xjwm··on Why Conscious AI Is a Bad, Bad Idea
>What I am trying to say is, it doesn't matter if the subject is actually conscious. All that matter is we (I), feel/think that it is conscious, or deserving of care and respect.

The law of gravity is nonsense. No such law exists. If I think I float, and you think I float, then it happens.

Interesting that the core is oversized. 640Km should be enough for any body.
xjwm··on Who Needs Main() Anyway?
Oh! Thank you. That makes much more sense now.
xjwm··on Who Needs Main() Anyway?
I've written code like this in C to create library functions that will be linked in to other projects, but where there is no 'main' function in the C file. Do people use C++ the same way, or is it best practice to include 'main?'

I've been sticking to old.reddit.com as much as possible, but hate all the new nags to switch. Using the mobile site (https://i.reddit.com/) is another somewhat acceptable workaround.

xjwm··on More than a third of white students lie about their race on college applications
>Most students, 48 percent, claimed to be Native American on their application.

I seriously have to wonder...is it possible that some of these applicants are confused about what the term 'Native American' signifies? E.g. confusing being 'from America' instead of a decedent of Indigenous peoples? It could be people taking advantage of the system, but it could also be due to ignorance.

xjwm··on Citing a serious flight test incident, FAA slows Boeing 777X certification
More negative press for Boeing, which they probably don't need after all the 737 MAX issues. From the layman's perspective, I can't tell if Engineers have gotten lazy/complacent in their designs, OR if the FAA has gotten significantly better at screening for potential issues, OR if we're operating so close to the edge of the design envelope that these issues are inevitable. I sincerely hope it is number 2 or 3, but my gut feel is that cost cutting and efficiency are winning over safety and good engineering analysis.

xjwm··on Conditions of ACME's Unconditional Guarantee
I just ordered one of these recently! Last week, I finished reading "The Cuckoo's Egg,"[0] about a computer espionage case in the late 1980s (great book, by the way.) Afterwards, I was looking up the author's information, and found the klein bottle website, and videos with Numberphile.

Cliff actually sent photos of the klein bottle I ordered as it was being packaged up for shipping! Lots of humorous tidbits hidden all around the website. Worth taking a few minutes to explore around.

xjwm··on Effectiveness of Grounded Sleeping on Recovery After Eccentric Muscle Loading
Well, the entire theory of this paper seems to revolve around the reference[0] that asks "Can Electrons Act as Antioxidants?" Since Oxidation[1] is the loss of an electron from an atom/ion/molecule, it seems like the entire premise doesn't make sense, or I have a severe misunderstanding of what is being discussed. Are we claiming that the free electrons are somehow preventing atoms from losing electrons, and that impacts muscle recovery?

xjwm··on Scientists have lost their jobs after NIH probe into foreign ties
Looking at the linked article[0], it looks like this is the result of a broader investigation into any undisclosed foreign ties, but it that the Chinese influence has been disproportionately large.

Lelling rejects criticism that the department has unfairly targeted ethnic Chinese people and other Asian Americans. “Dr. Lieber is probably the most prominent academic charged in this kind of case so far,” Lelling says, “and he is not a Chinese national, nor is he of Chinese descent.” But Lelling says China’s aggressive efforts to become the world leader in many high-tech fields has meant devoting more resources to tracking those of Chinese ancestry.

xjwm··on Scientists have lost their jobs after NIH probe into foreign ties
> We're going to skip the McCarthyism and go straight to racial profiling I guess.

Lauer said the fact that 82% of those being investigated are Asian “is not surprising” because “that’s who the Chinese target” in their foreign talent recruitment programs.

xjwm··on How long would it take to create a Windows 1.0 capable machine from scratch?
This also assumes that as each step is solved, it doesn't require a continued human presence. I.e. if you develop electricity, the electrical plant needs to be automated and run itself without human (or computer) interaction. The laws of entropy are going to come into play eventually. You might not be able to keep everything working for long enough to make meaningful progress.
xjwm··on How long would it take to create a Windows 1.0 capable machine from scratch?
I agree. If you have ever read the book Crystal Fire, about the work done at Fairchild Semiconductor in the 1950-70s, it took the best and brightest decades to solve the chemistry and engineering challenges present in building transistors and ICs. Even with 20 skilled PHDs as a starting point, I don't think you could overcome the practical manufacturing challenges in any reasonable amount of time.
