xioxox··on How 'Factorio' seduced Silicon Valley and me
I've never tried Factorio, but I found Satisfactory very boring after a few hours. It was initially fun to do some exploring and make some initial manufacturing lines. However, when I realised that to scale up the manufacturing, then I would have to place all these components by hand hundreds of times, it just felt like boring make-work, and I never turned it on again. Maybe I would have continued if there was some way of automating the building, such as some sort of 2D viewer.
xioxox··on Show HN: Chebyshev approximation calculator
Excellent work. I wanted to do this recently, but it was surprisingly hard to find code to calculate an approximation. I've bookmarked it for when I next need a quick approximation for a function.
xioxox··on AMD Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X Offer Excellent Linux Performance
It would be nice to see the idle power numbers, including the motherboard. A lot of the time I'm using my home PC for light tasks (browsing, listening to music, etc). The idle power is likely to dominate unless doing heavy processing tasks or gaming.

tsocks is quite useful for proxying a program's network access over ssh using SOCKS. I use it for accessing geo-blocked servers using command line tools without a full VPN.

xioxox··on Tiny World Map
Yes, many of the islands are missing even if they have labels (e.g. Faroe Islands). It would be nice if there was just a blob there at least.
xioxox··on Getting into way too much detail with the Z80 netlist simulation (2021)
Very nice site. Have you considered an Amstrad PCW emulator?
xioxox··on Is Fortran “A Dead Language”? (2022)
As someone who has to use Fortran for their job fairly frequently, I say Fortran is a pretty awful experience compared to Python.

Although Fortran is good at arrays, it is terrible at any other kind of data structure. You don't get a standard set of useful data structures (e.g. associative map, k-D tree). Unless you like implementing such stuff, you have to look through a bunch of possibly-working half-implemented codes found using google.

For something focused on numerics, it's lacking in standard IEEE numerical things such as a function to check for nan (GNU extension?!). There aren't an easy ways to do SIMD, excepting hoping the compiler does it for you. There aren't even standard numerical constants, so you get the joy of defining your own PI and hoping it doesn't clash with someone else's.

Strings in Fortran are beyond awful, even with the new ability to reallocate string length.

Then we come to the compilers. The commercial ones may be ok. I know the free ones are very buggy.

xioxox··on D Programming Language
There was a Python JIT a decade ago - Psyco [1]. It was/is a lot faster than normal Python. The community, however, decided to go down the PyPy route.

xioxox··on Why banks are suddenly closing down customer accounts
No fan of Farage, but then why was most of the document the bank produced about what he did as a politician? Farage also claims he never met these supposed thresholds.

Yes, Supernova is much slower than previous versions.
xioxox··on Documented source code for Elite on the NES
I enjoyed X3 and X4 quite a lot. However, I didn't like the UI and lack of jump drive in X4. It also has its share of bugs and the universe can get slow when the game progresses. It's still a very engrossing game, however.
xioxox··on Woman loses over $44k after downloading third-party app to buy fish
I've been seriously thinking of getting a separate phone which would just be used for financial apps. It seems apps are now required to log into a few of the institutions I use, and you can do virtually everything with their apps. Two factor seems to edging towards one factor, when a fingerprint can do everything.
xioxox··on I digitalized Berlin's registration form
They don't always. For my flat in a small block, it's "Erdgeschoss rechts" or EGR, in the contract or for the electricity.
xioxox··on Ebiggers/libdeflate: Heavily optimized DEFLATE/zlib/gzip library
One nice thing about this is that the compression factor seems quite a bit higher than standard gzip. This is very useful if you need compatibility with gzip/zlib formats (e.g. PNG files). For my use case, the compressed output was 8% smaller using libdeflate compression=12 than with gzip compression=9. The compression was also a lot faster with a single thread. It would be nice to see a comparison with a larger number of inputs, however.
xioxox··on The Ultimate-Rare story: 40 years of brilliant British games
There are tons. I loved Starglider 2, produced by Argonaut Games. It's like No Man's Sky, but is from the 80s.

xioxox··on Python consumes 38x more energy than Java
As a Fortran user, it's pretty awful for string handling. It's fine for numerics. However, there's a lack of libraries for non-numeric stuff (e.g. data structures). The free compilers are buggy, too.
xioxox··on LCD TVs won’t see any further development
The PWM frequency is typically much higher for LCDs than OLEDs, if it is used, and much less likely to be a problem.
xioxox··on “But the SEC let us go public” and other flawed arguments in Coinbase's defense
A better example is HMRC, the tax authority, in the UK. They won't tell you if your tax avoidance scheme is legal or not, but they will fine you or take you to court if they later decide it is not.
xioxox··on English in the Real World
Wasn't this rule made up by someone in the 18th century because he thought it sounded better [1]? Therefore, it's not even more correct to say fewer rather than less. The only reason to care about it is to stop people trying to correct your language usage.
