xfour··on Boom! Google pays $1B for Yahoo Sunnyvale sites it bought from Verizon
So how long until an annexation request for Googleopolis combining all these purchased parcels and becoming a city upon itself. That seems like a likely endgame here. Invokes a bit of a mix between a company town a mining operation might have, and a dystopian future.
xfour··on Apple kills the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro
I use the 2018 MacBook Air, 1.6ghz 16gb ram as a developer / development manager and it is faster than the 2015 pro it replaced with similar specs. The only thing I've seen it slow down on is compiling Rust, but I think that's just because that operation is slow.

Jetbrains IDEs works fine, not sure about XCode haven't done much with this machine yet in Mac Development.

xfour··on The female price of male pleasure
This website is downright unreadable on mobile it goes completely white every five seconds or so probably trying to load some JS.
xfour··on The rich world is enjoying an unprecedented jobs boom
Is this exclusive content of the economist or is there a non-paywalled mirror?
xfour··on San Francisco bans credit-only stores
Noticed it said brick and mortar. I’ve seen the practice much more prevalent with the popular food trucks. In both cases I feel like speed is essential and the moments where change is being made add up.

It is also like the article says dog-whistling the type of client you want at your establishment though.

xfour··on Kong Raises $43M in Series C Funding
Used Kong but don’t know too much about the internals other than I’ve heard it’s a wrapper on Nginx intended to be used as a proxy. Looking at some features around caching I was thinking about implementing they seem to have implemented a typical upsell tier around “plugins” or “features” not core to the product to charge for.
xfour··on I Bought a House with Solar Panels
Ahh yes Sunrun. We bought a house and our realtor had the foresight to investigate the situation before we closed on the home. We got a letter disclosing the system was owned free and clear. We setup the online tracking portal only to notice that they transferred the account like thousands of dollars in owed monies from the previous owner. After getting a call from the company trying to strongarm us for the debt we essentially told them to kick rocks.

They should’ve just demanded that money as part of escrow and now they’re left with a debt in someone else’s name that is never going to be paid and likely a headache for us in the future.

xfour··on Facebook to integrate the infrastructure for WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger
You’re right I didn’t stop to think of the children. And there you go, now we have the encryption broken and the National security letters as the reason they were forced to do so. It’s just as many of the comments above are saying you’re really just making this new shared infrastructure an enourmous target.
xfour··on Facebook to integrate the infrastructure for WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger
And Zuckerberg and FB have been true to their word every step of the way. I see the backpedaling now, “Well you see congressman, I ordered it but when we dug in deeper, it would have a material impact on revenue, so we were forced due to our fiduciary duty to remove it.” And just happened to not tell anyone until it came out via whistleblower or some other means.
xfour··on Facebook to integrate the infrastructure for WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger
Perhaps I'm being cynical, but I can see the business salivating over this. Integrate tracking into WhatsApp, you can now more easily graph who people talk to and use that for their FB and IG accounts, and probably destroy the e2e encryption while they're at it. Therefore re-monitizing that section of their userbase.
xfour··on Massive mortgage and loan data leak gets worse, original documents also exposed
So sloppy, this is why it becomes clear that your developers need to know the scope of your business. Best practices sure don’t leave an open server with production data. But, if you know you have tons of pii in there, you should treat that like proverbial nuclear radiating material and lock it down with whatever means are at your disposal, regardless of difficulty to do so.
xfour··on PHP Apprentice – An online, open-source book for learning PHP
Very well done, there’s a lot to help a novice PHP developer. I feel like the next chapters I’d love to see would take those concepts and apply them to building something. Everything so far unless I missed it is focused on the backend but it’s important to show that it’s also possible to use it as a front end and what the modern approaches to doing that are.
xfour··on 'Talent Wants Transit': Companies Near Transportation Gaining the Upper Hand
Yea it's a bit the tail wagging the dog or something along those lines. I think the consolidation and clustering of companies into downtown cores or in the case of the FANG, mega campuses causes people to look into ways to have a suburban "america dream house" as that type of housing stock near the downtown cores is either extremely expensive or undesirable.
xfour··on Ask HN: Is Google is broken for discovery?
Could be location helping. Not a lot of craft furniture stores in the Southern Part of Silicon Valley. Yet another side effect of buildings being worth 1k a sqft
xfour··on Ask HN: Is Google is broken for discovery?
What other search engines would you recommend?
xfour··on Ask HN: Is Google is broken for discovery?
Pinterest at least for me is the worst browsing experience ever. Sucks you in with thumbnails that you can’t enlarge and regwalls and annoyance I personally avoid it like the plague
xfour··on Ask HN: Is Google is broken for discovery?
Right? How is that useful to anyone?
xfour··on Ask HN: Is Google is broken for discovery?
Totally. This was another thing that bugged me to no end trying to separate the wheat from the chaff so to speak. I went with JontyCraft which I originally found on amazon and then cross referenced myself. Seems like they are US based and when they arrived the chair was extremely solid no toddler is going to break it I think adults if they could fit it could sit fine it’s so well made.
xfour··on Ask HN: Is Google is broken for discovery?
I agree with you that’s its probably the worst case. But let’s explore, I also need a new TV, well not need but it’s been around 10 years figure I want to see what’s up in the TV market. This time there was one new review site I was happy to see called rtings that I hadn’t heard about. But between thats was 50 versions of better buy and the like.

Perhaps it’s false nostalgia but I feel like search results used to have some variety.

xfour··on Ask HN: Is Google is broken for discovery?
Oh that’s pretty cool I didn’t know you could do that.
xfour··on Ask HN: Is Google is broken for discovery?
Ha, exactly what I did in the end. I thought I was clever.

But if this is the case then what value is google providing other than a good search interface on subreddits?

xfour··on Sears Files for Bankruptcy
I wonder if in a strange way companies like Sears were a victim of the first dotcom bubble crash. If they had pivoted at that point, they’d have been in a better place. But I could just imagine the executives being in such an “I told you this web thing was a fad” mode that they missed their window to modernize.

Especially since the kind of non amazon places that seem to succeed now carry heavy products and sears had no shortage of that.

xfour··on Starbucks Economics (2006)
Even the short is too big. Midway through the article it talks about how it’s supposed to be five or six oz. short is still eight.

Thought when I saw the $4.65 or so ripoff flat white they’d figured it out until the barista asked “what size”, arg....

xfour··on Ask HN: Where are other tech scenes outside Bay Area
I’ve heard people complaining that LA is just as bad as the Bay now housing costs vs Salaries.

Anyone live in the Midwest and can chime in on their experiences?

xfour··on Ask HN: Where are other tech scenes outside Bay Area
True, never really thought about that software tech really is in every industry. Do you do that and is it fulfilling?
xfour··on Ask HN: Where are other tech scenes outside Bay Area
Portland is definitely somewhere I’ve been thinking. Schools seem to be an issue in a lot of neighborhoods except Lake Oswego. Anywhere closer to the city know for good schools?

Also what’s your favorite companies of those 4K openings I should look into?

xfour··on Ask HN: Where are other tech scenes outside Bay Area
I hear Seattle has gotten just as expensive as SF not true?

Remote is interesting for sure. The rise of companies like Buffer and I believe the Wordpress company is 100% remote.

Definitely solves half my issue also looking for somewhere actually nice to live.

xfour··on Ask HN: Where are other tech scenes outside Bay Area
What show was so scary it chased you back to AZ? Book of Mormon?

J/K assuming you meant snow.

Jokes aside what companies do you like in the area?

xfour··on Ask HN: Where are other tech scenes outside Bay Area
Pretty familiar with San Diego, it’s the nicer part of Southern California from my perspective.

My Cousin just opened a Brewery called the Kensington which I believe is the name of the neighborhood as well.

What neighborhood did you land in?

What’s the percentage difference in Salary you’d expect? Say Mid Level Developer in SF is ~150-200k at this point would it be 100k median or so?

xfour··on Ask HN: Where are other tech scenes outside Bay Area
Yea I googled it, Research Park Triangle it seems. It seemed really interesting. Housing seemed to be pretty reasonable by California standards.

What neighborhoods are worth checking out and what companies are interesting.

Saw a lot of NetApp and IBM. Nothing wrong with those just seems like not a lot of companies just a few of ones from first glance.
