xfer··on Ask HN: Recommendation for general purpose JIT compiler
I would suggest generating webassembly instead and use wasmtime.
xfer··on RIPE NCC executive board resolution on provision of critical services
As long there are cables connecting them, they will be fine. Whatever RIPE can do to isolate russia can be done by their peering partners, russia might do it themselves.
xfer··on Privacy in email communication: we should use encryption by default
I can also screenshot my device showing signal/whatsapp, that doesn't make them insecure.

There is a lot of email based verification/authentication happening which would benefit if the email encryption was more widely accepted.

xfer··on I'm so sorry everyone. Or: why I'm switching to Cloudflare
You can buy ip tunnel services like this: https://freerangecloud.com/products.php
xfer··on Running a private mail server for six years, easy peasy
I do, so far i have had no problems, i run postfix relaying to SES on tailscale interface.
xfer··on Ask HN: Why should I trust password managers?
Never do any kind of clever scheme with passwords, the other side might be storing in plaintext, have misconfigured logging etc.

My isp does store them in plaintext :), the support person read my password to me while fixing an issue with the account(you can guess which language their webpage is in).

xfer··on 1Password for SSH and Git (Beta)
Then why is your cloud provider charging by GB-secs? This is the future after all.
xfer··on Exposing a web service with Cloudflare Tunnel
ipv4 costs will keep increasing, so if you want cheap vpses ipv6 will be the only option and this will allow you to use cloudflare network to serve the v4 users.
xfer··on Spam blacklisting is out of control
You failed to mention that if you haven't managed to complete this successfully(google also has a similar form: https://postmaster.google.com), google will just mark it as SPAM, but outlook will *silently* drop your mails.
xfer··on For some searches the whole screen on Google is now ads
This is sad and a recent development, i was using google to search for manuals/api docs as it was better than builtin indexing. But now-a-days official sites are never the first link.
xfer··on Reasons for servers to support IPv6
Not if they already block icmp traffic.
xfer··on I got pwned by my cloud costs
Make up your mind: https://www.netcup.eu/vserver/vps.php
xfer··on Free Postgres databases for small projects
> charges me when VMs are alive and

You still need that capacity, don't you? You will have to adjust the pricing but i doubt it will cost either of us any less, whether you allocate it.

xfer··on 1Password Has Raised $620M
People and businesses are storing their data that these passwords protect using free operating systems.
xfer··on Do svidaniya, Igor, and thank you for Nginx
Maybe they don't want multiple TB/sec of ddos? They make the software, not necessarily should have the equipment to eat that kind of traffic.
xfer··on BitTorrent v2 (2020)
There is a whole scene around people spending 50-100/m just around this. There is a lot of money to be made if you live in the "right" countries.
xfer··on We handle 80TB and 5M page views a month for under $400
Spinning disks lose data integrity? You will be surprised where the cloud servers store your backups then. They are doing 80TB/month, you don't need 1GB/s nvme for that(assuming everything is uncached).
xfer··on Fixing stutters in Papers Please on Linux
It does if you sell on platforms that you don't intend to support.
xfer··on Fixing stutters in Papers Please on Linux
> Not many people would have the expertise or the interest to troubleshoot the problem as OP did

Not many people have the expertise to do this on windows either(i would expect even fewer). Bear in mind that the developer sells this game as supported on Linux. The main reason is developers understandably don't care for bugs encountered by 2% users, which makes it a completely different discussion.

xfer··on IPv4 Waiting List
I bought 1gbps router in 2011 and still 10gbps is far out, why would i buy a new router? Wifi APs are a different story.
xfer··on Re-thinking electronic mail
> google checking gpg signature? nope

Are you proposing that they mark every mail spam that's not on the contact list of user? Otherwise checking signatures doesn't do anything, spammers already use dkim.

xfer··on Re-thinking electronic mail
I am sure such a scheme embedded into a protocol would work with certain group of people. Most people would just get the same amount of spam, because they can't afford to up their threshold in a way that would deter the "marketeers" to stop such activity.
xfer··on Re-thinking electronic mail
> in a way that does not prevent the poor, disadvantaged,

Yeah mining coins totally doesn't exclude poor people. If it costs less than the profit spammers make they will use it. You can't just handwave the thresold away, and pretend you are solving the problem by just asking for money(thereby excluding large swaths of people). Just use your iMessage.

xfer··on Rclone: Rsync for cloud storage – CLI to sync between cloud storage providers
They don't charge for traffic, it matters if you have >10TB, but not individuals taking backups.
xfer··on 4x Smaller, 50x Faster
The entire project used to be cljs, so obviously it's done on purpose, that is stated in the article.
xfer··on 4x Smaller, 50x Faster
Yes they did, maybe take a look at the repo, the core vt layer is rust everything around it is in js(it's not cljs, you might ponder why not).
xfer··on Piracy release group EVO ‘blames’ movie industry for its popularity
Yes, no longer renewing my subscription this year, google play music did similar things to me. I occasionally listen to music, and not fond of my playlist greyed out because of turf wars.
xfer··on AWS free tier data transfer expansion
I also have an arm machine hosted, good if you want to compile stuff, but the networking has been super flaky and unreliable. I would definitely not call their service nice, when quite often you can't login because network issues. Also their separate identity(legacy stuff)/cloud service dashboard was also confusing.
xfer··on How to Learn Nix
I played Dota2 in NixOS for years, so i am not sure why steam wouldn't work for you(it uses FHS too). You can always ask for help in discourse/matrix channel.

> since sometimes I want to get stuff done and not tinker with my system.

Plenty of people do get their work done on NixOS, so good luck with that attitude.

xfer··on How to Learn Nix
If your software can run on linux it's extremely unlikely to not work on NixOS.

In fact proprietary binaries will be much easier to run since you don't have to do with non-reproducible builds in some source repo/build system.

Have you considered reading the manual? NixOS is not for you if you don't want to spend time learning the basics.

I have run xilinx vivado inside FHS within 15mins. Mostly figuring what libraries are needed for all binaries.
