xerox13ster··on I avoid using LLMs as a publisher and writer
And just like the original Hanlon’s Razor, this is not an excuse to be stupid or incompetent.

It is not a reason to accept stupidity or incompetence. We should reject these things and demand better.

That's been Vivaldi. Brave is the browser that just markets itself. If it "just worked" it wouldn't need crypto bs to lock you in and convince you it's "working".

I've been getting all my ads blocked just fine with Vivaldi without inflating a shitcoin since before Brave had gourd smeared on its forehead.

Your tortured use of language reveals the twisted thought process behind them.

In your statement, you erase trans people and redefined them as something else that fits your small worldview. That is in and of itself inherently anti-trans.

Someone being a trans woman does not make their participation in sports “male inclusion”. They are a woman if they transitioned to become a woman, and saying they are not and should be excluded because you said so is anti trans.

xerox13ster··on Why I'm skeptical of Ground News
Honey, Established Titles, BetterHelp, 7CupsofTea, RAID Shadow Legends, FTX, OperaGX, AG1, Factor, HelloFresh, AirUp. How many am I missing? How much more do we need to see to be convinced?

I won’t use Ground News or Brilliant (I tried it in 2019 and was unimpressed) because they market so aggressively, something doesn’t smell right!

xerox13ster··on Welcome to the Age of Disappearance
The very unfortunate thing is by the time we get to that point, the ballot box is going to be broken beyond repair. We're gonna have to open the final box in defense of Democracy and I know toooooo many people who don't see how we're already nearly past the point of hope for any other outcome.

I literally named one: Trump's anti-trans sports executive order.

Care to read more than a sentence at a time?

The progressively worsening attacks on the ability of trans people to exist in daily life.

Depending on how you define the Ten Stages of Genocide, we for sure have crossed the 3rd stage of genocide with all the state level anti trans bills and Trumps executive orders, and they’ve also engaged in stages 4 and 6. They’re not pressing on the brake, there’s a lead block on the gas pedal and they have repeatedly professed to wanting to erase us from public life. Trump released a campaign video about it in Feb/March of 2023.

And for how many of them were the protests formed around the Democrat politician?

How many Democrats: got up on stage for a rally for themselves then -> told the attendees to go and “peacefully protest” then -> the protestors went and turned into a riot?

How many of the George Floyd protesters were chanting to hang a public official? With the intent of dismantling democracy?

These are not the same.

xerox13ster··on Bispecific antibodies potently neutralize SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern
And in which case did the party leader stand up and incite the mob before they went on their war path?

If we’re going to compare January 6 to the George Floyd riots, one was explicitly political, and the other one was fed up populace.

One started with a rally intended to gas the mob up in hopes of securing the capital for their fuhrer. The other was started as the result of the outright murder of an individual by a state actor.

One was essentially organized by the Republican Party leader, and the other was an impromptu display of discontent.

xerox13ster··on Troubleshooting: A skill that never goes obsolete
This mentality through most of my career has left me trapped as technical support, and it's damn near impossible to climb out of the pit I've dug for myself. What you say about being seen as a car mechanic is true.

xerox13ster··on Spotify's Beta Used 'Pirate' MP3 Files, Some from Pirate Bay (2017)
I didn't trust Pirate Bay for mp3s or albums because of the rumors of people getting csam, and even if I trusted it, I was downloading at school so I couldn't get away with installing a torrent software (although it was 2010-2011, and I was using opera 11 with built in torrenting software ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). The school would let us install other browsers and music players since they used an app blacklist not a whitelist. My friends and di would also use the PortableApps toolset to install unapproved apps like Quake 3 and networked chat software to our flashdrives and run them from there.

I used a Zune and synced all my music at school as a guest device, and there was no way for me to rip dicsographies to flac and had no hardware to play them.

The main way I got all my files back then, that you haven't listed here, was by googling the name of the album or song I wanted followed by either .zip or .mp3 and then the words mediafire, megaupload, or beemp3. "[album name].zip mediafire" this was when googles search bar features still worked and exposed most of the raw index (100s of result pages. Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooogle)

Only if I couldn't find it that way would I then resort to using "N°1 Free online Video Converter" onlinevideoconverter.com to rip a song from YouTube. That was usually reserved for meme songs like covers, the Ultimate showdown, Epic Rap Battles, and stuff like the Bedroom Intruder autotune and other Gregory Brothers viral hits.

My golden child older brother who was a way bigger intellectual (not technological) nerd than me was the one who begged for the credit card to buy songs once napster shut down. He wouldn't always buy from iTunes, sometimes he would "save money" by buying them for pennies on the dollar (like 20 rubles) from a Russian piracy site that purported to pay the artists, as though that gave him the moral high ground over my piracy, when it was obvious there was no way that was happening.

xerox13ster··on Carlos Slim cancels his collaboration with Elon Musk's Starlink
They're gonna come for me anyway. Better than my communications going through his network. Maybe if enough people cite his behavior when cancelling T-Mobile will back off working with him, and he'll lose even more money.
xerox13ster··on Carlos Slim cancels his collaboration with Elon Musk's Starlink
Good!!! I just finished porting my number off of T-Mobile since I canceled my service with them mid-Superbowl when I learned they were collaborating with StarLink; I don't want to support a man advocating for my erasure because he's mad at his daughter for disowning him. I made it explicitly clear why I was cancelling, citing Elon and StarLink by name.

Glad to see others participating in the "free" market and "voting with our wallets" before that ends up being the only way we can vote. Even more glad Slim is costing him billions compared to my pennies.

xerox13ster··on Ask HN: Former devs who can't get a job, what did you end up doing for work?
I’ve been in the industry for a decade as a dev that can’t seem to get out of support roles because I wanted to do what you describe at the start of my career and now I’m only seen as support and I’ve NEVER found a support org that, heh, supported my development efforts like that first job did.
xerox13ster··on Ask for no, don't ask for yes (2022)
Ohhhh, riiiiight, you're one of those bosses that project their weakness and paranoia onto the people that work for them to tear down subordinates and stay on top.

Thanks for confirming your impotence as a leader and your inability to delegate.

xerox13ster··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
You're telling on yourself by admitting to, apparently, not considering that I COULD tell it was intentional parody, found the ironic humor in it, and STILL found it tasteless enough to call them out for talking about a child like they're a product.
xerox13ster··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
I don't talk about spending time with my children, friends, and family like they're a job, no.

Is it that much work in your mind to be social with the people you care about or are you just unable to drop the corpo think at home?

xerox13ster··on Show HN: I scrape Steam data every month and it's yours to download for free

xerox13ster··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
Colored it a corporate beige.

Who the heck is so brain broken as to talk about their grandchild as a startup project and their family as a frigging team.

I have to almost need to see this as AI in order to maintain sanity because there’s no way an actual human being talked about a child—their human grandchild like he was a product.

xerox13ster··on 'Everybody is looking at their phones,' says man freed after 30 years in prison
Please explain to me how this discussion of voter turnout and voter suppression in the lens of Democrat versus Republican is not too political for Hacker News?

Please remember that this entire sub thread was precipitated from you saying that the mention of a reality TV star in the context of the effects of reality TV is too political and now you are actually discussing politics.

xerox13ster··on 'Everybody is looking at their phones,' says man freed after 30 years in prison
Why are you talking about Trump’s vote counts if any mention of a reality TV star in the context of reality TV is too political for Hacker News?

You were the first to say that something was too political for Hacker News and yet here you are in this thread, engaging in the most political discussion.

xerox13ster··on 'Everybody is looking at their phones,' says man freed after 30 years in prison
You’re making a hypocritical mistake:

You claimed the passing mention of a reality TV star in the context of the effects of reality TV on society was too political for Hacker News, and now you have descended into Democrat versus Republican percentage based figures on voting.

xerox13ster··on 'Everybody is looking at their phones,' says man freed after 30 years in prison
You’re making this explicitly political now by brining up vote counts. All the OC did was bring up the effect of reality TV shows on public consciousness. I reinforced that the person mentioned was relevant to their point.

You brought up completely unrelated voter turnout of other political figures completely irrelevant to any discussion of Reality TV and when reprimanded have brought up explicit vote counts, completely derailing into the political.

This is not appropriate for hacker news, by your own estimation. For shame: your behavior is hypocritical.

xerox13ster··on Ask for no, don't ask for yes (2022)
Yes you’re the boss and no one can take that away from you. You must have worked very hard to get there if you’re blocking your team from taking initiative and making independent contributions to the organization. Based on this attitude I’d assume you suffer from an extreme inability to delegate and are going to be stuck in whatever direct supervisor position you’re in for the remainder of your career.

If I showed initiative like this and your response was “I’m the boss. Don’t push me around.” I’d quit on the spot and I sincerely hope you only have lackeys too dumb to understand how detrimental this egoist attitude to your own authority is to productivity and creating organizational value.

xerox13ster··on 'Everybody is looking at their phones,' says man freed after 30 years in prison
Trump was a reality show star, the other people were not.

I think you made it too political for HN by bringing up other politicians and concerns about them that are irrelevant when talking about the effect reality tv has had.

xerox13ster··on Facing problem while botting Arch Linux in my laptop
I’m gonna do you one better than sending you to the arch forums, but because you were posting on the hacker news forum about arch I am not going to baby you more than the arch forum would. I’m not going to define any of these words that I’m about to use. I am only going to tell you what you needed to do. It is on you to understand and do it.

Did you set up your file system table correctly?

You needed to edit /etc/fstab to point /boot to the partition UUID for your bootloader partition and the “/“ root level to the partition id of the root partition. You can get the partition ids using the blkid command.

The reason I ask this first is that it is common for users when setting up their first arch install to use /dev/sdx where x is a,b,c etc. as that’s how drives are assigned.

Noobs (including myself the first few times) will use the guest (pen drive) operating system’s device path assignments in the fstab, leading to failure when the installed boot drive is /dev/sdb1 under the guest OS but is recognized as /dev/sda1 on boot with the pendrive removed.

No matter what installation of Linux reads the partition ID of the drive, it should remain the same, meaning that if you carried that drive into another computer with multiple drives and selected that drive as boot it would still boot correctly.

If you use the device path method, if you plug that drive into another computer with multiple drives, it will be assigned a different device path and probably not boot.

If it’s not that, give us more information.

Bios no drive error? Nothing but a blinking cursor? A kernel level error complaining about a missing root? Did you install the intel-ucode package and add it to the boot loader entry before the kernel load?

Godspeed. Fuck Windows.

xerox13ster··on Some terminal frustrations
Powershell is so asinine I don’t know why you would bring it up unless you’re a blue badge crypto posting for Microsoft.

Do you want to talk about portability and transferability? It is the epitome of non-transferable and non-portable.

It is a domain specific shell language built for the Windows operating system win32 only. It does not work on Mac. It does not work on Linux. If you somehow managed to replace the Win32 shell with something else, it doesn’t work.

Bash or at least the shell script in UNIX has been going for 50 years. Power shell was shit out of Microsoft’s ass in 2007 and reached “usability” in 2013.

It broke compatibility with batch scripting, you have to call cmd to get batch scripts to behave. It broke compatibility with W scripting, or rather, justified to MS that abandoning script host was a worthy goal. It does not follow any of the same conventions as the Shell scripts and terminal commands that windows had used for decades at that point. If I want to accomplish something in powershell, I have to go look it up or I have to trust some command that somebody’s written on stack overflow will do what they say it does because I don’t have the time or the energy to go through and look up every single aspect of the command for a domain specific shell language that only works for a single operating system & that is worthless with any other system.

I spent probably about a decade of my life from 11 years old to 21 years old learning to use the Windows command line and W script.

To the degree that I literally automated myself out of my first tech job.

So therefore, my decade of time investment to become proficient with Windows scripting is non-transferable and Microsoft decided to throw it out.

If I had spent that time learning UNIX I would have been able to immediately go and use any other UNIX system and probably would’ve been able to get a much higher paying job at the start of my career.
