xerophyte12932··on How to Keep a Journal
Debugging Journal. Though to be honest, it's hard to stick to this habit. When I do make entries, they are of the form:

- Symptoms (how is the bug manifesting) - Initial Observations (This is where you dig into the code/debugger and write down all the weird things that are happening) - Guess (A statement of what you think is causing this based on your observations) - Fix (what change you made) - Result (Did it fix the bug? Did some new bug pop up as a result?) - Repeat till bug resolved

Obviously, it's hard to keep writing so meticulously about bugs, but it sure does help when something similar pops up again.

Apparently the link itself is to a twitter post by Julia Evans.
xerophyte12932··on Stop trying to work hard
Is it just me or he sucks at presenting an argument. I read the whole thing and am still not clear exactly what he is trying to say.

He keeps equating hard work or success with height. What's the point? You are either born to be successful or not? Your hardwork isn't something you did, it was something you were born with?

xerophyte12932··on Body count rises as Philippines president calls for drug addicts to be killed
That was my first thought as well, but then I realized normal people aren't just waiting with stow away guns waiting for the day they can go on a killing frenzy. The type who are like that are possibly connected to drug as wells (as either addicts or part of the criminal machine) which means they are more likely to go into hiding lest they be killed themselves.

Yes, maybe some murderers will slip under the radar, but the numbers so far look good. Only 30 deaths over the country (that's no killing frenzy) and 952 people have surrendered to the authorities. I'd say it's working

xerophyte12932··on The Daredevil Camera
While the actual curiosity-following-adventure is amazing, i think one other aspect to all of this that deserves a lot of praise is his writing. He managed to take us on his adventure along with him. Not every blogger pulls that off successfully.

Kudos to that!

xerophyte12932··on An interactive way of blogging about JavaScript
This is actually pretty cool. One of the major things that actually help learning JS is how easy it is to test out a piece of code before writing it to your main code base. Simply pop open a JS console on any browser and test that line out that you aren't sure would work.

This works in the same vein and lets you play around with the code you are learning. I am definitely using this the next time I blog about code or algorithms

xerophyte12932··on Passwords for 32M Twitter accounts may have been hacked and leaked
wouldn't the slowness of bcrpyt be a hindrance enough? Of course rate limiting is a much greater barrier, but I thought the whole point of using bcrypt is that its naturally slow and prevents checking several passwords in a short time
xerophyte12932··on Get Paid to Move to Maine
Then you happened to avoid the places in those cities where people defecate. Trust me, it's a thing. Though it surprises me that even SF has this problem

Your comment > Cost of living, specifically real-estate, is silly low

From https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11845054:

> Portland is "expensive" for rent (you're very lucky to get a nice 1br for 1400/mo, with rents on the rise due to out-of-state purchasing of condos for rental-income or airBNB/subsidizing owner-seasonal housing)

> Housing costs are steeply on the rise

Please explain

xerophyte12932··on The rise and fall of the dungeon master on software projects
> oversimplify a complicated phenomenon

I thought the author acknowledged that it's complicated and that it has many aspects to it and that it's not easy to solve at all.

> useless drivel on medium

You are entitled to your opinion. I personally feel it was a good read and I share his sentiments of frustration and resent

xerophyte12932··on The attention economy

That is a great metric btw. I usually do this at the end of the day on the ride back home from work when my dad and I discuss things we read that day

xerophyte12932··on Sublime Text 3 marked as recommended build
in ST3 beta, one issue i faced was large files that changed frequently, like a log file. ST3 would neither keep the uncharged version, nor just append changes, but load the entire file from scratch and show me loading bar every time the file changed.

Notepad++ handled that surprisingly well. pretty much the only time i had to use another text editor besides ST

xerophyte12932··on Updating classic workplace sabotage techniques

xerophyte12932··on Introducing WhatsApp's Desktop App
So what is the benefit of this over the Web version? Same UI, both need the internet, both have desktop notifications, both need your cellphone to be connected to the internet. Not to mention, no linux version
xerophyte12932··on Introducing WhatsApp's Desktop App
This is what I love about fb messenger over whatsapp. You can use it on your pc even without your cellphone. This dependency on the mobile makes no sense at all. It kills half the usecase.
xerophyte12932··on Autonomous Robot Surgeon Bests Humans
As a software developer, I am inclined to trust the surgeon more.
xerophyte12932··on Twitter Bars Intelligence Agencies from Using Analytics Service
Yes, but is it really that absurd to think the govt could monitor all twitter traffic and form a superior analytical tool if it wanted to?
xerophyte12932··on Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence
Well, getting five 6's in a row is 1/7776 , so I suppose it is debatable if one could establish the dice are loaded from such a small sample set.
xerophyte12932··on Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence
I haven't read that but I assume it goes along the lines of...

Gambler: "I already got five 6's. I can't possibly get another one. That's a statistical improbability!"

Wrong assumption: Past dice rolls affect future rolls where as dice rolls are independent. Its improbably to get six 6's in a row but GIVEN that you have 5 sixes, getting a sixth is just 1/6

Am I right?

xerophyte12932··on Email Isn’t the Thing We’re Bad At
I disagree. It gives you stuff to talk about when you meet. Ask details of things you saw in a post or a picture etc etc.

Besides, there are so so so many aspects of people's lives they do NOT post or tweet about. My "reconnect after a long time" chats are usually spent exploring those

xerophyte12932··on The Humans Hiding Behind the Chatbots
> I've never once ran into a chat "bot" that wasn't human.

Well that's absurd. Siri? Eliza? There are multitudes of actual chat bots out there. They usually good to fool a good lot of the general population. But the tapestry unravels with just a little bit of effort if you know what to ask.

xerophyte12932··on Ask HN: Describe your first enterprise sale
I assume you didn't accumulate the 128297 pdf's in the space of a day or a week or even an year (that would be over 351 pdf's per day, every day of the year). I assume you download like what? 10 pdf's per day? If you can take the time to visit 10 company websites and go through their documentation every day, I assume you cab find the time to read (and possibly respond to) 10 emails per day
xerophyte12932··on What if the problem of poverty is that it’s profitable to other people?
> $5 in South Asia is mostly mythical,

Much to everyone's surprise, it's not. People from the region attest to the fact.

> Even where it would be true, that's a large multiple over what they could make otherwise.

Only if you factor in that these women are uneducated, poverty-stricken and job prospects are low.

xerophyte12932··on Russian photographer matches random people with social network photos
It's interesting how almost everyone he photographed completely ignored him by either closing their eyes, diving into their cellphone or just pretending to be interested in something else
xerophyte12932··on Russian photographer matches random people with social network photos
You are right, I saw this as that as well. Someone who looks bland may actually have a very fun and colorful life. That's an important lesson here.
xerophyte12932··on What if the problem of poverty is that it’s profitable to other people?
Minor nitpick: Prostitutes make a lot? I guess depends on which part of the world we are talking about. I hear you can get them in South Asia for as low as $5. Probably lower.
xerophyte12932··on Vitter's reservoir sampling algorithm D: randomly selecting unique items
This may be a stupid question, but why not store cards/tweets in a hashmap and add a .contains() check before adding?
xerophyte12932··on Thread pools: How do I use them?
I have been following her for well over an year now for exactly this reason. She never preaches. It's more like taking her readers along on this journey of discovery. Very very humble and yet insightful
xerophyte12932··on We only hire the trendiest
What I think in such cases is "unless I can convince him that this is a bad idea, then I should let him do it". Yes, I understand that sometimes we aren't entirely sure why a thing is bad, we just have a gut feeling that it would break something, or is a bad practice.

So first off I try to convince them with everything I got. That usually works if I have solid concrete reasons. If I don't and let them do it there way. Sometimes it turns out my instincts were right and I get to learn exactly what was right about them. Sometimes it turns out I was wrong and his way was much more efficient and I get to learn something new.

Either way, it doesn't make the junior dev feel I am imposing my will on him. People tend to work harder when they feel it was their idea.

xerophyte12932··on Emac’s Org Mode will improve your software engineering
Personally, if I am dumping thoughts out, keyboard and screen works well, especially if it's text heavy and long (like a blog post or story chapter). On the other hand, if am trying to understand something, I prefer a pencil and paper and writing it down and perhaps drawing things makes me understand it better.
