xeomavms··on Reflecting on 2024: Innovations in Video Surveillance with Xeoma VMS
As we approach the end of 2024, we wanted to take a moment to share highlights from this transformative year for Xeoma and the broader field of video surveillance. This year, our team focused on three core pillars: innovation, user-centric design, and integration of cutting-edge AI technologies.

2024 Milestones:

1. Smarter Interfaces for Everyone

Introduced a modernized and minimalist interface with smarter scaling for various devices. Interaface is now available in 78 languages, making Xeoma more universal than ever.

2. AI Innovations for Enhanced Safety

Released AI-powered modules such as: - Speech Recognition: Real-time transcription and detection of key phrases. - Construction Safety Detector: Advanced algorithms for monitoring helmet usage and workplace safety compliance. - Restaurant Visitor Counter: AI-driven analytics for customer insights and optimization.

3. Improved Performance Across Platforms

Added H.266 (VVC) codec support for improved compression and streaming quality. Integrated seamless PTZ joystick control on Linux and advanced motion visualization for archives.

4. Collaborative Problem Solving

Launched the "Setup Wizard," streamlining initial system configurations for users, from selecting modules to enabling P2P connections.

5. Community Involvement

Worked with users to refine features based on feedback, including enhanced support for emerging camera models and video stream types like m3u8.

Key Challenges and Lessons Learned: While AI modules made significant strides, balancing performance with resource usage remains an ongoing challenge. Our approach has been to optimize algorithms for real-time processing, which we'd love to discuss further with the community here.

Scaling up support for newer, underrepresented languages tested the limits of our localization workflows. If you’ve faced similar challenges, we’d love to hear your thoughts!

What’s Next? Looking forward to 2025, we're exploring new AI applications in video surveillance, like predictive analytics and ethical use cases for public safety. We're also planning to expand compatibility with more hardware and cloud ecosystems.

What trends in video surveillance or AI have caught your attention this year? How do you see these technologies shaping 2025? We're keen to learn from the HN community's perspective and insights.

Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to our users and the tech community for your support and collaboration. Here’s to building a smarter, safer, and more connected world together. Happy New Year!

The main advantage of a DIY surveillance system is that it is usually assembled from components you have at hand or can cheaply purchase. Luckily, nowadays, you can use any cameras you like for such a system – even simple USB web cameras or analog cameras connected through a DVR.
