xenonite··on AirPods 5
An iPhone is not sufficient. I had a perfectly working Find My with the AirPods Pro 1&2. I just bought the newest AirPods Pro 3 and they can’t be found with the iPhone unless I upgrade to the newest operating system. Fair enough they advertise a higher precision. But they don’t write that even for the previous low precision, you need now the newest operating system.
xenonite··on Smolts: A pedagogical IDE for a teaching language
The go-back debugger is great, I am providing this in my educational Python IDE here: https://primopy.com
xenonite··on My personal AI benchmark: “Generate an SVG of a frog with a Habsburg jaw”
Great idea! Would be interesting to see the raw SVG sources too, not only the renderings.
xenonite··on Show HN: Open-source engine running Gemma 4 26B in 2 GB RAM on any M-series Mac
With my M1 MBA, I am still on macOS 15. To compile it, just remove the two lines with

  opts.languageVersion = .version4_0
or surround them with

  if #available(macOS 26.0, *) {
    opts.languageVersion = .version4_0
  }
You'll miss out on a prefill speedup of 2.4x (as it yields 11.24x faster attention), according to the git comments, but it works. (On the 8-GPU-core MBA M1, I get 5-6 tok/s.)

Yes see Dr Nehls for this.

xenonite··on Switzerland wil have a referendum to cap population at 10M
No it isn’t racism as Germans had the same skin color. Keep in mind that Germans aren’t stereotypical anymore.

In Switzerland live over 41% migrants and children of migrants (just 8.4%). So the native Swiss are not just “surrounded” but greatly diminished.

xenonite··on Switzerland wil have a referendum to cap population at 10M
> In Germany extra-EU immigrants are on average net contributors to welfare state too.

Interesting. By what cost does this measure loss of freedom due to increased surveillance, decreased freedom of movement especially for women. Also increased cost and decreasing quality of police, law, education, or even street cleaning…

xenonite··on Switzerland wil have a referendum to cap population at 10M
Yes, we have a really well recognized Spanish team lead here, yet he’s mostly hiring Spanish people (in Switzerland), oh yes and one Italian is the exception.

Also we had a German team lead hiring Germans, well surprise it is easier being with similar ones.

Diversity back in the day meant Physics, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering working together…

xenonite··on A 3D Body from Eight Questions – No Photo, No GPU
Well sorry no, because already the torso to leg length ratio is covered by none of their question. (and yes, they list it as a limitation)
xenonite··on BitNet: Inference framework for 1-bit LLMs
Thanks, but where did you actually find the new model? The newest one seems to be 11 months old, from Apr 15, 2025.
xenonite··on I let ChatGPT analyze a decade of my Apple Watch data, then I called my doctor
Interesting to read, thank you very much. Are you still eating ketogenic? The bacillus subtilis seems to metabolize glucose, so are yours still alive? And did you try other probiotica beforehand? I am having HIT and eating a mostly carnivore diet with mostly fresh/unfermented meat.
xenonite··on Variation on Iota
This is about the APL language.

std::iota is influenced by APL, see Notes in https://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/algorithm/iota.html

xenonite··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
Sorry but no, the parent commenters looked for a global menu within an application (File -> Open, File -> Save, etc.)

by the way, on macOS the global menu is searchable, too. Shortcut is Command+Shift+/

xenonite··on Are we tired of social media? (2025)
On iOS, the grey scale filter can also be activated via triple clicking the power button:

It is the “zoom”, in which you can have 1.0 scale and add a color filter.

I like the combined grayscale and color inversion filter.

The triple click zoom is activated in Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut: https://support.apple.com/111771

The scale can be set by activating the zoom controller once, zooming out, and then hiding it.

xenonite··on Gestational diabetes rose every year in the US since 2016
Hint: go for low carb, see for example Lily Nichols on that subject. Her book is called “Real Food for Gestational Diabetes”.

xenonite··on Kidnapped by Deutsche Bahn
Indeed, but I guess that the seller got compensated anyways for the extra two hours of delayed arrival.
xenonite··on Building a macOS app to know when my Mac is thermal throttling
This is great to hear.

Is there a similar free way for getting Windows signatures?

xenonite··on How to Enter a City Like a King
Specifically w.r.t to advertising: In socialist contries there is often only one single brand of a certain product. This removes the need for advertising. But without competition, productivity goes south with time.
xenonite··on Apple Debuts iPhone 17
Camera lens angles of the 17 Pro seem strange to me.

Either too wide (1x) or too narrow (4x), as seen in the live stream video, which was recorded with the iPhone 17 Pro.

I am currently on the 13 Pro, I find the 3x mode ideal for portrait photos and videos.

Is it only me with this impression? Could someone help me to jump back into Apple's reality distortion field?

Removing the seasoning from a McDonald’s burger is only possible with human contact afaik. So no, not any customization is possible.

What about setting a white background, which yields a white menubar?

A color logo might be added with an overlay app – or you reminisce a black&white screen.

Why should she need sugar to walk? It is perfectly viable to let the muscles burn ketones instead. There is no need to eat carbs (unless there is a problem in the fat digestion system etc.)
xenonite··on TikZJax: Embedding LaTeX Drawings in HTML
While live rendering is nice, I suppose that generating static SVGs that are embedded in a static webpage generator are more fruitful for the typical case. A quick search yielded this: https://polbarrachina.com/2022/05/23/latex-and-tikz-in-jekyl...
xenonite··on Fun ways of deciding authorship order
Also I suppose that Z authors might have more publications because they are nice to collaborate with.
xenonite··on „Fluoride reduces IQ" report needs to be retracted
Yes indeed I can choose to avoid it at the individual level. Then I at least don’t want to be forced toxic water upon me.
xenonite··on „Fluoride reduces IQ" report needs to be retracted
sorry I was not joking. If flouride (also in toothpaste) would be enough to stop the typical tooth decay with the current habits of eating sugar, soda etc., well then fine.

But it is not enough. However I believe that stopping sugar, soda, bread etc. would be enough. In that case, the fluoride neurotoxin would not be necessary anymore.

xenonite··on „Fluoride reduces IQ" report needs to be retracted
Well if flouride would be efficient enough, there wouldn't be so many dentists around. What source do you need for that?
xenonite··on Why Norway is edging towards a fresh EU membership bid
"gets no say in how it’s written" ... well this is the same case for member countries (they also have only few things to say), and was one of the reasons for Brexit.
xenonite··on Farewell potholes? UK team invents self-healing road surface
well as you name the rail infrastructure: it was sold out and left to despair since the 1970s. This was clearly lobbying from the automotive industry. Similarly in the USA, tramlines where teared down in many cities.
