xdertz··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
This is not really sustainable when there is a constant supply of increasingly powerful and efficient hardware.
xdertz··on The senior engineer death spiral
The 'job hopping advice' is always so one-dimensonal as if salary maxing is the only metric that counts. You should always take everything into account

- work climate and coworkers - work life balance - legal rewards for staying (This might not apply to the US but in most of Europe you get progressively harder to fire the longer you stay at one company)

xdertz··on iPhone Duo
because when doing whacky hardware you need to control the entire UI stack. Android can never deliver this because of the fragmentation and you get apps that don't work right and bug out constantly.

Apple can force developers to use APIs that make the apps work correctly on the foldable even if they are not directly optimized.

xdertz··on iPhone Duo
The most important part of a foldable is the screen and they are designed and made by Samsung, so hard to come up with something Samsung couldn't have done in their own phone.
xdertz··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
I wonder, how long until the ad business will target agents instead of humans?
xdertz··on Tiny $70 Xteink X3 e-reader puts Silicon Valley to shame
As someone that mainly switched to e-readers because of bad eyes, this is way too small. Even the bigger x4 seems too small for the font size I feel comfortable with.
xdertz··on ArXiv has almost 600 submissions today and most are AI slop
Then you have schools demanding a published paper as part of their masters degree. This gave rise to many conferences that are just publishing mills.
xdertz··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
They have no fab for CPUs, they are manufactured by Samsung and TSMC. The bottleneck is in manufacturing RAM not CPUs so there is nothing Apple can do here.
xdertz··on OpenAI: GPT 5.6 Sol price reduction (until at least Nov 21)
This is the same as saying every binary is open source because you can look at and change the machine code.

Open source means you reveal how you created this binary.

xdertz··on Why is Anthropic's public writing style so unlike Claude's?
I wouldn't let kids use a sharp kitchen knife either, but it is still something that everyone benefits from owning.
xdertz··on Supersonic Trebuchet [video]
There are three issues that arise

- structural: There are height and size limits on things you can build without a permit

- trespassing: flinging objects onto others people property is illegal

- endangerment: any activity that can endanger other people is illegal

All of these three depend on how rural you live I guess. So in a suburban neighborhood I would assume they get involved very quickly.

xdertz··on Supersonic Trebuchet [video]
if you want low cost and portable, chemistry (i.e. gunpowder) always wins over gravity powered.
xdertz··on Nvidia dramatically reduces amount of OpenAI infra financing it may guarantee
We could very well reach a point where models don't get better anymore, or where consumer models are good enough for 95% of the use-cases.
xdertz··on Nvidia dramatically reduces amount of OpenAI infra financing it may guarantee
I think he is wrong on the overall usefulness of AI but I have yet to see someone actually refuting his economic arguments.
xdertz··on Grok Bot
This sounds like a problem the service providers should solve. Some kind of 'create bot account' function where you can give granular permissions for a new account to interact with your data. This already exists in some form with company accounts.
xdertz··on Grok Bot
when my colleagues do something illegal or negligent they are personally on the hook for it. Who is on the hook when my bot does that?
xdertz··on IMAX vs. IMAX 70mm: The difference between these two cinema formats
The guitar claim is not true anymore. Companies like NeuralDSP have reached the point where it is indistinguishable from analogue. Virtual amps have pretty much completely replaced analogue amps in live setups and many studio recordings.
xdertz··on IMAX vs. IMAX 70mm: The difference between these two cinema formats
You can also watch 1.43:1 in a virtual cinema in VR.
xdertz··on 1,741 "informed" consents with one click? GDPR complaint filed
two main sources

analytics: A/B testing, "if x does user click y"?, unique page visits, etc.

ads: integrating with an ad provider comes with hundreds of trackers, because they want to - know if you bought a product after clicking on an ad - show you targeted ads for shoes after you googled shoes - build a profile of you (age, gender, location, profession) to show relevant ads across different websites

xdertz··on How to build a circular LCD clock
It is logically a 1080x1080 rectangular display. Every pixel outside the circle is ignored.
xdertz··on OpenAI's Ad Business Is on Pace to Miss Its Own Forecast by 90%, Analyst Says
> as they don't seem as popular as search engines.

Anecdotal evidence that I observe is that people stopped using google and only ask LLMs nowadays for their everyday queries.

xdertz··on OpenAI's Ad Business Is on Pace to Miss Its Own Forecast by 90%, Analyst Says
LLMs are great for product research, as in "I want to buy X, what brands are there and what are the pros/cons and what do users report".

Lots of potential to game the results there. If that is enough to sustain the business is another question.

xdertz··on 98% isn't much
So how about also getting rid of all regulations for wheelchair friendly infrastructure while we are at it? Way too expensive and it is even less than 2% of the population that requires it.
xdertz··on Amazon has enough satellites to launch its Starlink competitor
There are plenty of roaming applications: camping, boating, flying and war zones, which have both private and enterprise customer possibilities.

Then there are remote places that either have no other option or would like a backup solution.

xdertz··on Zuckerberg 'Admits' Meta's Layoffs Were Ineffective
I don't think it is either of those. He is clearly not dumb nor do I think he is inherently evil. The thing is just that he became a billionaire at 23 and did not have to experience any of the grounding and setbacks that turn someone into a responsible adult.

He is basically a middle-aged college bro that always got what he wanted and never had to ask twice for something.

xdertz··on Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5
Their target market is completely different. Anthropic and OpenAI try to build general AI that wins on all the benchmarks by throwing ungodly amounts of money at it.

Mistral focuses on long term b2b contracts and their proposition is that they fine tune their model to your needs with an added bonus of 'not dependent on America' in a politically tumultuous time.

xdertz··on ArXiv's Next Chapter
It is also valuable for scientists as it is often a 'directors cut' version of the paper. Journal submissions are heavy edited and shortened to fit into the page limits.
xdertz··on Free the Icons
Tapping something is discoverable and a basic human instinct. How the hell do you discover "swipe up from the bottom edge and then slightly right" to open the app switcher?
xdertz··on AI's Affordability Crisis
Github Copilot lets you use Anthropic models. This is just a way for enterprises to fold this into their existing Microsoft contract instead of negotiating with a new vendor.
xdertz··on The Low-Tech AI of Elden Ring
> LLMs can be described as "hardcoded weights for generating the next token". All code is "hardcoded".

I disagree. Hardcoded means you need to change and recompile the entire program. So neither an .env file nor model weights that are loaded at runtime are 'hardcoded'.
