John Mearsheimer is the same guy who justifies why Ukraine deserves to be occupied by Russia.

> Jews must be the textbook example of "with friends like these, who needs enemies?"

Aren't you people supposed to say "Israelis" so that you can pretend your antisemitism is "legitimate criticism of the country of Israel"?

xdennis··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
He said "current regime". He obviously means the previous regime didn't do this (as if Snowden didn't happen under Obama).
xdennis··on Zelensky says Russia has widened attacks to hit Ukraine's data centres
> Ukraine is never going to recapture the territory that it has lost without European troops on the ground.

This is such a defeatist attitude. By that logic North Vietnam would never have recovered South Vietnam.

A lot of things can happen if you just refuse to be defeated. Hannibal killed almost the entire Roman army at Cannae, but the war ended 15 years later with full victory by the Romans.

In 1940, Britain was the only country in Europe fighting Germany. Many had fallen, were neutral or were fighting with the Nazis (Russia, Italy, etc). But in the end Britain won.

Okay, I'll bite. What did he do that's racist and fascist. And please provide receipts.

For reference, here are the definitions:

racist: a person who believes that a particular race is superior to others, or who discriminates against other races

fascism: any right-wing, authoritarian, nationalist ideology characterized by centralized, totalitarian governance, strong regimentation of the economy and society, and repression of criticism or opposition

xdennis··on Australia says it could follow Canada in forging deeper ties with EU
Singapore is a city, Australia is a continent. Singapore is a poor analog for pretty much every other country. It was founded precisely because it sits near a busy sea route. It makes sense for Singapore to be very open to trade. That does not mean it works for Australia.

(I'm not arguing that the reverse is true, just that Singapore proves nothing.)

xdennis··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
> as it's a very common style to find for informal writing all over the internet

No it's not. It's common in chats where those people don't bother with punctuation at all, often writing a single sentence over multiple lines.

It's not common for blogs or long form content.

xdennis··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
It's not derived from that. Most people don't use IRC anymore and there are basically no open chat platforms left. Most people now use phones to chat, where the keyboard automatically changes case for you after finishing a sentence.

So typing in all lowercase is a choice. I think it's a way to signal "I don't follow norms". It signals membership in a group.

xdennis··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
What is the logic behind transforming `FreeBSD RCEs` to `freebsd RCEs`?

If what you're trying to communicate is that, like Sam Altman, you're too cool the press the shift key, then why write some initialisms in upper case? After all, there is a style of acronyms that are always written in lower case: Latin ones ("i.e.", "e.g.")

xdennis··on Unified Arabic
Mao did not simplify Chinese. The First Chinese Character Simplification Scheme simply adopted simplified characters in common use.

But if it was such a great idea, why is it not an issue in Hong Kong which does not use it?

xdennis··on Netherlands pulls gold out of the US
> The pedantry of being angry at the US for being the only country that actually has the word "America" in its name

That is not the reason.

People say that Columbus discovered America. They don't mean the country, they mean the continent. The people in the continent of America are called Americans. About a century ago, US Americans came to view America as two continents.

Many countries still hold to America being a single continent, but there's no name for the people of America because US Americans stole it. The is very equivalent to how the EU is stealing Europe/European.

xdennis··on Banca Etica Suspends A/I's Account While Condemning the Sanctions Behind It
> Canadian truckers were doing bad things and A/I were doing good things

That is such a platitude that I'm not sure if you're serious or you're just attempting Reddit humor.

But if you're serious, at least try to justify what A/I is doing by saying things like terrorism is in the eye of the beholder like Piker does.

xdennis··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
> You can not be simultaneously pro-legal immigration and support banning legal immigration.

Nobody is banning legal immigration. It's being restricted. The headline itself says "pauses". Do you think no legal immigrant will be let into the US until 2028?

> some sort of program where people apply for permission

Yes, and if that program is being abused (just ask people here on HN about H1Bs to see how they feel), then you pause it until you figure out how to solve it.

xdennis··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
> The irony: many native Americans believe that all of your own immigrant ancestors should never be allowed to enter the US.

And your lesson from this is that Native Americans should continue to be ignored and more immigrants let in?

If you care about Native Americans (and don't just use them as a rhetorical device to argue with people on the internet) then surely, you'd support a reduction in immigration, right?

xdennis··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
If you're saying that's hypocritical, it's not.

Being anti-illegal immigration and pro-legal immigration doesn't mean you want to flood the country with legal immigrants. That's the case in the UK, by the way, where the vast majority of immigrants are legal and it's the reason for the growing anti-immigrant attitude of the natives.

People who are anti-illegal immigration and pro-legal immigration also have requirements like:

- there should be a fixed number of legal immigrants

- they should be well vetted (this may be lacking in the US and UK)

- legal immigration should be points based

- quotas for legal immigrants should be increased contingent on the number of illegal immigrants which are expelled

- there should be checks to verify that visas are not abused (the way H1Bs are abused in the US with under qualified immigrants)

- asylum should be abolished because it's abused. It can be replaced by paying poorer countries to permanently host asylees.

xdennis··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
The trade bazooka was an empty threat. This is somewhat similar to the trillion dollar coin[1]. It's a tool used for negotiations, not a real thing. If the trade bazooka was real, wasn't this the best opportunity to use it? What else could it be saved for?

xdennis··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
As a previous massive cheater in RPG games (when a was young and it was easy to write your own tools) the reason to cheat is because many games (especially RPGs) have bullshit mechanics. You have to perform a lot of repetitive stuff to get ahead. Cheating is seen as honorable because it's about getting back at a system which forces you into unfair circumstances (this is akin to corruption/graft in real life).

In my opinion, this is not the same as people who use AI comment bots.

Of course, other cheaters had other reasons, but the few I was friends with had similar motivations. (Actually, a few just created tools because they enjoyed creating tools, not so much actually using them.)

xdennis··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
> The part that astonishes me is that in the year of our common era two thousand twenty-six

It astonishes me that in 2026 AD, people still like to pretend that our calendar is not based on Christ's supposed birth. Christians have no problem calling days after pagan gods (Wednesday = Woden's day, Thursday = Thor's day, etc), but for some reason we have to pretend like the calendar isn't based on the Christian god.

xdennis··on Apple says more ex-employees may have taken confidential data to OpenAI
I'd rather have OpenAI steal from Apple, the most valuable company in the world than to steal from everyone else: published books, StackOverflow users, Reddit comments I made 15 years ago, etc.

I have no sympathy at all for Apple in this case. Jobs didn't have any sympathy for Xerox when he stole from them.

xdennis··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
> Microsoft stole my copy of Minecraft.

Microsoft stole two of my accounts.

I bought Minecraft in the alpha days when all you needed was a username and password. At some point they mandated an email in the years I wasn't playing and later found out I could no longer sign in.

I bought a new "copy" and lost it because I didn't migrate to a Microsoft account. I didn't migrate because I assumed it was just a scare tactic and I wasn't playing at the time anyway. When I later wanted to play they stopped allowing me to log in.

When I look at the top selling games[1] and see Minecraft in second place with 400 million, I wonder how many of those are the same people buying it again. I'm sure nobody bought Super Mario because it would stop letting them sign in to play offline.

> We are not in the business of mass massacres.

Ridiculous take. Defense is not a massacre. They are almost all fighting age men, and they outnumber the fighting age men of Ceuta. They've caused enourmous damage to Ceuta. All of this could have been prevented if there were men with guns guarding those walls.

During Franco, Ceuta was guarded by a 1 meter tall fence made of barbed wire. No one dared to cross it because they knew what would happen if they invaded.

xdennis··on Google has abandoned Google News?
> What's with big tech companies changing all searches to be fuzzy?

Probably because it maximizes usage time, so more ads are served.

If the user gets what he's looking for as the first result, he spends hardly any time on the site. If the site never delivers the right results, the user will stop using.

Optimal enshitification happens when the user spends as much time as possible without forcing him to quit.

People don't remember now, but in the old HN comments like "this is so true honestly" would have been downvoted. If a comment just agrees with the parent, people would have said that's what the upvote button is for. Adding a "I agree" comment is just noise.
xdennis··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
> Who said it was evidence? Did a judge authorize or issue a warrant to collect said evidence? Absent that, it's just your property, and you can do with it as you please.

Why do people go sovereign citizen when reality doesn't work their way? Stop imagining that the way you want things to be is the way things really are.

Cops do not need a judge to authorize the seizing of evidence. Cops do not need judges to decide what evidence is. Tell me, why did you just pretend like these are real requirements? I can understand why you'd want it to be that, but you wanting it to be that doesn't change reality.

It's as if you've just learned about the Fourth Amendment but know nothing about the nuance behind it.

Your system wouldn't even work at all. Let's imagine the cops get a tip that a bald man with a blue tshirt shot a man. They patrol the streets and find a match. By your logic they should not have the ability to search the man and seize his gun as evidence until a judge issues a warrant.
