xdennis··on What we call "age verification" is actually mass surveillance
After a while you age out of getting carded. The vast majority of alcohol is bought without ever showing any ID.
xdennis··on Algorithmic Monocultures in Hiring
It's surprising to me to hear that these systems are considered racist when they're the same ones that are so color blind that they generate pictures of SS soldiers as African American women.
xdennis··on Digital euro clears key hurdle as EU seeks to break free from U.S. credit cards
> If someone hacks you/deceives you and somehow they got $5000 from your debit card, then your bank account is $5000 smaller.

That's a myth. I had my debit card cloned and some money stolen. The bank gave my money back. Debit cards are protected too.

> Europeans being so scared of debt is so funny.

I've never understood this mentality. It's like walking through a dangerous neighborhood knowing that you have excellent health insurance. If you get stabbed, you'll probably recover very well, but why take the risk?

I can understand going into debt to buy a house, but I can't understand going into debt to buy a can of tuna. Why take an unnecessary risk?

xdennis··on Turns Out, There Is a Cabal of Elite Crazies Trying to Control the World
No, it just means you'll achieve nothing.

The right has been complaining for a while that billionaires want us to eat bugs and own nothing. Instead of forming a common cause, left wingers only complain about right wing billionaires while sanctifying left wing billionaires like Bill Gates.

The biggest scandal is probably how authorities ignored rape gang activities out of fear of being perceived as bigoted.

xdennis··on Notes from tired Egyptian whose job is explaining that humans built the pyramids
> This feels deeply insulting considering humans also created taxation, organized warfare, and raisins.

Offtopic, but why do people hate raisins so much? No other dried fruit gets so much hate.

I would imagine it's something genetic like the reason why some people dislike coriander (which has been shown to be related to genetic sensitivity to aldehydes).

xdennis··on U.S. science is in chaos
> That doesn't show they were purged. There are many reasons their numbers declined.

Fun fact, what you're arguing is actually one of the reasons Charlie was murdered.

He notoriously said that the Civil Rights Act was a mistake. He specifically referred to Title VII which states even a neutral policy can be racism if it produces disparate impact[1] in practice. That is, if a neutral policy results in fewer black people being hired, that's evidence of racism. Charlie disagreed with that.

It's fun to see leftists argue the same when it comes to discrimination against right wing or centrist academics.

Maybe flickering, but it's still broken in various ways. Only a few days ago I had an issue where the text I was typing was outside of the textbox frame. Resizing the terminal still maintained the broken view.
xdennis··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
> When exactly are the upsides going to hit?

Never. At this point I think the only way out is a Sea Peoples[1] level of collapse. Maybe they'll call it the Late Chip Age collapse. People will not put with with being obsoleted. Americans at least have the means to resist. The rest of us will probably need 3D printers.

xdennis··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
> When did conservatives abandon the free market?

You're using terms incorrectly. Conservatism has nothing to do with free market.

The people who care most about free markets are liberals (called libertarians in the US).

Presumably you mean to say "Republicans". And your answer is "under Trump". But it's important to note that Trump merely took the Republican party back to its roots. Traditionally, Republicans were more protectionists than the Democrats. Regan changed that, and Trump reverted.

But what annoys me about people who criticize this change, is that it often comes from people who don't believe in free markets.

---

As a side note, I think the reason Americans use these terms so wrongly is because of the 2 party system. It forces all ideologies into two camps and for Americans "conservatism", "libertarianism", "nationalism", "fascism" are all the same.

xdennis··on Sweet Jeebus, macOS 27 Golden Gate Removes the Dumb Icons from Menu Items
You have to make accommodation for designers, that's simply their language. If something is misaligned by 1 pixel, it's not an annoyance, it's a catastrophe.

The icons were bad, but the real issue with the new theme is the waste of space and wasting time computing transparencies.

xdennis··on Building an HTML-first site doubled our users overnight
> 60 year people can't user your fancy site because then don't have an internal model of how a computer works.

Many developers are unaware how many people are not comfortable with computers.

Here's an example with my dad, 64. During Covid, he had to get his medicine by emailing his GP instead of going to him. He received the email address as a photograph of a piece of paper over WhatsApp. (Clearly the doctor wasn't comfortable with tech either.) The paper said:

    Send your medication request to:

        - john.smith@some.long.medical.site.org
He tried a lot, but every time he received an email saying the address is invalid. After a lot of frustration he asked me for help (he's not the kind to ask for help).

He said "I tried everything: lowercase, uppercase, spaces between '.', no spaces, space between '-', no space... Nothing works!"

He thought "-" was part of the email address. To some people it might seem like he was being dumb, but he's never had to seriously use computers before. When he bought our first computer he was 38 and never used it. He got his own laptop at 46, and only used it for movies and Skype, before WhatsApp existed. It doesn't seem that odd to know how email addresses work. (He is a technical person, but not a computer person. For example, decades ago he etched a circuit to make an HBO decoder so we can watch HBO for free.)

xdennis··on OpenCV 5 Is Here: The Biggest Leap in Years for Computer Vision
It's not just AI slop, it's a milestone AI post.

gptzero.me rates it 91% AI, 9% mixed, and 0% human. (I've only pasted a portion of the text to fit in the 10000 character free limit.)

xdennis··on 1worldflag: A blue dot on a transparent background
A white flag used to be the flag of France: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_France_(1814...

A world flag should not use flags which were associated with a country. Evan this proposal is too derivative of the Japanese flag.

xdennis··on Ian's Secure Shoelace Knot
This is similar to how I ties my shoes, without the double twist though.

Even as a kid, I thought of it as a problem decomposition:

1) tie a knot

2) fold ends in half

3) treat the folded strings as a single string and go to step 1 and exit

> EU law gives every citizen a right to a bank account.

That directive regulates banks from denying the opening of a basic payment account. But there is no legislation preventing governments from freezing accounts, Canada-style. As far as I know, there's no protection against being de-banked.

xdennis··on Anthropic confidentially submits draft S-1 to the SEC
I'm pretty sure that's the change GP is referring to. But pension funds can choose to specifically exclude such companies. The Danish pension fund has already excluded SpaceX, which owns xAI. (This also probably relates to American threats of annexation of Danish territories, not just AI stuff.)
xdennis··on Citing 'severe' math deficits, UC faculty demand a return to SAT tests for STEM
> This has the unintended consequence of encouraging schools to eject students who are struggling.

You're saying that like it's a bad thing.

I'm continuously surprised by how America, a supposed capitalist country is more communist than some communist countries.

I grew up in Romania, after the revolution, but we still had basically the same education system. Even in communist Romania, if you wanted to get into a good high-school, you had to pass exams, and if you didn't perform well in school, you got left behind.

Everyone understood that if you wanted kids to succeed, you couldn't let the slow kids pull down the smart kids.

xdennis··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
> The current system seems to generate a collection of second-class citizens

Poor choice of words. Illegals are not citizens. That's the whole point.

> have no recourse if they're exploited

The recourse is to go back. In the era when you could just immigrate to the US just by getting on a boat (before the Immigration Act of 1924), about 1/3 of immigrants went back to their home country if they did not make it in the US.

See:

> From 1908 to 1932, 12 million individuals migrated to the United States. Over the same period, four million returned to their source country.

-- https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S00144... (you have to pirate it to view the full thing)

But now, the expectation of leftists is that the government is somehow supposed to help the failed immigrants.

> Or you can simply move to a country that actually apreciates you and doesnt treat you like unwanted subhuman garbage. We have few in Europe, with QoL and happiness higher than US average.

Please don't. Europe has enough ethnic tensions. At least the US is built to be an ethnic melting pot. It's much better to go there.

xdennis··on Iliad fragment found in Roman-era mummy
> I'd also note that Elliott Page is, of course, not a woman.

Scientists can tell that Lucy the hominid was a female even though only a few of her bones have survived since 3.2 million years ago when she died yet leftists think that Page is no longer a women just because she excised her breasts and changed her government papers.

If her bones get fossilized, 100 million years from now you'd still be able to figure out she's a woman.

> A big part of Achilles' story in the Iliad

Not only is it not a big part, but it's not even in the Iliad. You're clearly just regurgitating talking points.

That's a later invention. And it doesn't make him a transsexual. He marries a woman there.

xdennis··on Iliad fragment found in Roman-era mummy

xdennis··on We stopped AI bot spam in our GitHub repo using Git's –author flag
It's quite ironic to complain about AI slop in a piece that's quite clearly AI slop.

Soon there will be no more AI doomer comments. The bots will take over that job too.

---

I'm working for an open source company, and my God, are 95% of contributions useless.

There are really dumb ones where the bot writes 10 paragraphs about how he implemented the feature, but the entire changeset is adding one line to .gitignore or adding a CLAUDE.md file.

There are even worse ones where the bot submits 3000 lines of code that seemingly works, but you have to spend an hour to figure out why it doesn't work.

The dumb ones are so much better.

xdennis··on Chess puzzle I found in my dad's old book
