xchaotic··on A work-from-home tax [pdf]
It’s as if DB want to be hated even more. Is their business model tied to doing the most evil things possible?
xchaotic··on Ask HN: Am I too late for the “Data Science” wave?
I think the difference now is that even a small company can aggregate data from all over the world which makes it more valuable- therefore a good data scientist/ engineer can be paid more than just ‘middle class’
xchaotic··on Better disposable coffee cups can be made with waste from sugar cane
A reusable cup is still higher quality and more eco, right?
xchaotic··on Save like a pessimist, invest like an optimist
Rose tinted glasses
xchaotic··on Save like a pessimist, invest like an optimist
I think the central banks and government will prevent any future collapse of that scale. Don’t fight the fed. They have more money than you.
xchaotic··on Save like a pessimist, invest like an optimist
If this is just retirement money, so what? It rebounded pretty well since.
xchaotic··on Save like a pessimist, invest like an optimist
But as things get automated and cheaper that’s actually negative gdp growth. So it won’t pay your retirement
xchaotic··on Save like a pessimist, invest like an optimist
The rich will not give away their stuff. You’d probably have to give away 90% of your wealth to be level with the rest of the world. Also it is communism and it doesn’t work in practice.
xchaotic··on Intel's disruption is now complete
Question: now that we know that Intel is dead and stuck on 14nm process why has the share price not tanked yet? I mean it should be trading on the future PE?
xchaotic··on Dutch brewery burns iron as a clean, recyclable fuel
How much iron is wasted in the process? I’m pretty sure they are not able to recycle 100% of the oxide and there must be some material losses. Also what temperature do they need ? I assume they are making their own bottles so I wonder if a much more simple process to heat up using electricity directly would not be more efficient?
xchaotic··on The pandemic turned my parents into day traders
There is a huge difference between trading binary options or spread betting and holding a portfolio of FAANGS stocks. It’s very unlikely that you will lose 100% of your money if you’re holding more than 1 stock. Even ‘dead’ stocks like Boeing are pretty resilient on top of various bailouts and speculative hopes.
xchaotic··on The pandemic turned my parents into day traders
The way the market is structured retail traders are indeed the tail. You have founders, seed rounds, angel investors, VCs, Private Equity and maybe eventually public stock market. So by the time retail traders get their hands on it, the value has been recycled and inflated many times over.
xchaotic··on Ask HN: What are real-life useful use-cases for blockchain (not currencies)?
you misunderstood - it's not limited to cryptocurrency or even DLT - in making the whole scheme elaborate you bypass the traditional AML/KYC regulations - anyone can buy your 'token' without setting up a legal account or using a legal source of funding such as a credit card.
xchaotic··on Ask HN: What are real-life useful use-cases for blockchain (not currencies)?
why does it need a distributed blockchain though? Why not just put it in a database?
xchaotic··on I reverse engineered McDonalds’ internal API
It's a virus not a bacteria so the proteins don't disintegrate. The probability of transmission outside is small as sensibly people limit the time outside, but the flipside is they stay indoors, in confined spaces together, which is perfect breeding ground for the virus.
xchaotic··on There are only four billion floats, so test them all (2014)
Articles like this make me wonder how everything even works if basic math functions can be so wrong and how a simple concept like floor can have different definitions/ implementations
xchaotic··on Ask HN: What's a solid, non-mesh/-repeater/-cloud WiFi-GbE bridge ~100 USD?
I’m happy to hear what’s on the market currently. I’m still using older Apple hardware which works flawlessly. I wish they’d kept the network products in production.
xchaotic··on Covid-19 in Iceland: Violated Isolation and Infected over 100
Well, the country is reliant on tourism. But bad apples are everywhere, I think such people need to be held against their will until they are no longer dangerous to others.
xchaotic··on The Growing Case for a Microsoft Azure Slowdown [pdf]
Both AWS and Azure will still grow, but with macro situation as it is, a slowdown is almost expected therefore prices in.
xchaotic··on SARS-CoV-2 positivity rates associated with circulating Vitamin D levels
Not an expert at all but moderate dosage should have no side effects. Regular Overdose by 2000-3000% can have some long term negative effects.
xchaotic··on The majority of 18- to 29-year-olds in the US are now living with their parents
Multi generation homes used to be norm but societies became wealthy enough to move away from that ( and various frictions it creates) looks like we’re literally moving back. Good for the environment, bad for the economy and mental well being.
xchaotic··on ARM: Can 'crown jewel' of UK technology be protected?
Great Britain is now much more desperate. It needs to compete for market share and access to markets like a 3rd world country but without the associated cheap labour so high tech is one of the few anchors where Britain might have USP. But as you say with ARM that ship has sailed with the previous sale to SoftBank. The only chance to salvage some of the know how (not the IP) would be if these specialists could find similar jobs in Cambridge but there simply isn’t enough opportunities especially as the broader market is dire battered by brexit covid and general stagflation. Not an enviable position- bit like Japan a few years back.
xchaotic··on Redis Labs Raises $100M
Yeah, but it’s not cheaper than AWS or rather it can’t be profitably cheaper IMO because of lack of scale. So as long as AWS option is good enough, as a CFO I’d go in that direction.

Nebulous claims like cloud neutrality don’t pay the bills and I have not really seen businesses jump from one cloud to another seamlessly, no matter the software.

xchaotic··on Redis Labs Raises $100M
In the broader market there’s still hype for SaaS businesses which Redis can easily become because everyone wants to be a rentier and earn passive income.
xchaotic··on Lego IKEA Bygglek – First Look
I sold my Beddinge sofa after 7 years. You can replace the mattress and covers separately
xchaotic··on First tax year with Stripe Atlas
This is such FUD. I run a company in Poland and pay flat 19% on profits. You can also choose to pay 32% but you can then include a lot more expenses. If somehow you feel neither option is good enough for you, you can run your business from Estonia or Czech Republic or any other EU country.
xchaotic··on Pieter Levels Makes $600k a Year from Nomad List and Remote OK
Interesting but the way you phrased it, doesn’t sell it particularly well - it seems to simply hide the underlying dependency complexity a few layers below. It’s still a node.js app with all the pros and cons of npm etc.
xchaotic··on Pieter Levels Makes $600k a Year from Nomad List and Remote OK
Arguably Pieter might be at this point already and he doesn’t care. With the right tech and more people he could scale some of his businesses further but he deliberately doesn’t want that as its diminished returns for him, personally.
xchaotic··on Universal basic income seems to improve employment and well-being
In the end there will always be critics of UBI just as there were critics of combustion engine and now EVs. It’s progress and not everyone gets along but UBI does circumvent some evolutionary barriers in modern society- the fact that even the most rich still hoard stuff is just natural instinct and you need some artificial mechanisms to work around that.
xchaotic··on Universal basic income seems to improve employment and well-being
Even if that is all it achieves, inflation is much better than recession or stagnation. It forces people to think of new ways to run business to stay ahead.
