xcasex··on Intel Launches 8th Generation CPUs, Starting with Kaby Lake Refresh
aaand with linux, baytrail is still an issue, even though 4+ intel engineers are working on cracking that nut.
xcasex··on Nullsoft: The death of the last maverick tech company (2004)
is the music player "Vox" still around? if so, try it out :)
xcasex··on Statement by Jill Bähring Regarding Jacob Appelbaum
Veterans who have spoken out about brashness, him being socially clumsy, him being an asshole.

There are as of yet unsubstantiated, uncorroborated & unverified stories.

xcasex··on Statement by Jill Bähring Regarding Jacob Appelbaum
the infosec scene is in a place the OSS scene was in ˜13-14 years ago, before the formal introduction of the gnome foundation, kde reorg. guess what both of those projects have? outreach programmes and ombudsmän.

now, guess what the tor project lacks.

as you're probably thinking right now "but how in the f..." simple, OSS has had to deal with toxic enviroments and individuals. one of the cornerstones is, listen, corroborate, recommend, act.

the infosec community as a whole lack formal mature organisations to deal with these kinds of situations.

what we're still lacking in the witness accounts are timeframes, we have something of a picture from very vague details from leaked emails, these can be regarding pretty much anything, aside from one which is about _unspecified_ misconduct at a conference.

the sad thing here is that people can change, victims with trauma live with the trauma, so listen, validate, no-shame or pre-judgement.

but the infosec scene isnt a special snowflake exempt from the social contract of society, we all co-sign it by living in a nationstate, so we need to uphold it because the alternative is chaos.

if there is a legitimate grievance, report it, go through the system. hell, even brokep says as much, and he trusts the system on this, even though the process he has been forced to endure.

xcasex··on Why younger people can’t afford a house
this is interesting, a house in sweden, even rural sweden runs at the cheapest just shy of 1mil sek. that is to say, the lower end bracket of the middle class can forget about owning a house.
xcasex··on Skylake's Linux power management is dreadful you shouldn't buy until it's fixed
This reminds me of something.. Oh, right. Baytrail support. that's still lacking as well, and that's also a C-state issue.
xcasex··on The Story Behind F.lux
basically its the old Microsoft adage that Apple somehow co-opted, embrace - extend etc etc. Apple implemented a feature for the next release of osx that does what f.lux does, knowingly.
xcasex··on How 3D printing threatens our patent system
tldr; Good.
xcasex··on SSH Backdoor found in Fortinet firewalls
not as long as everything runs privileged as the superuser. running all services as root by default is bad juju.
xcasex··on Dick Smith Is the Greatest Private Equity Heist of All Time
This, to me, is somewhat funny in the "that train is going to hit that car.." sense.

whenever there's an exploit used by non state actors in an adversarial sense, there's goverment pressure to cyber this, cyber that, banhammer down, on the technology sector.

But several times a year we get to read about predatory behaviour by financial institutions. i'd even venture to say borderline illegal considering the presedences. i digress, but there's simply low enough of a risk of the goverment getting involved that this type of crime is not only "worth it" but also shows how deeply embedded the finance sector is in the pockets of politicians the world over.

xcasex··on ReactOS, a 17-year quest for an open-source Windows, has a new release candidate
I vehemetly disagree wrg. to firewalls and a11y.

Gnome-Shell (default on fedora et al.) has since the GNOME projects 2.x release had _stellar_ accessability support.

Firewall? you fail to mention what you'd block. there are ease of use projects shipping per default such as UFW. But since it's uncommon in the post-inetd era to have services running and exposed publicly, i fail to see the usecase.

bsods? uncommon? i have four baytrail tablets that spew forth a bluescreen once a day.

xcasex··on Ind.ie phone
this isnt just a phone. the manifesto -- and i use the term loosely -- is more or less about subverting the oss community because.. UxD.

the phone - it's a pipedream, unless they actually get the capital to design & produce the full stack, and the baseband. oh the baseband. it needs to be able to be reloaded at intervals, checksummed, isolated etc.

the project aims for a true indienet, one where every client is a peer in a privacy empowered social network, as if that isn't an oxymoron per definition.

my biggest gripe, isn't the goals, it's the language and the blanket generalizations.

oh and don't forget, the alpha client for the social network is osx only.

xcasex··on O'Reilly on Morozov
Evgeny Morozov, while a talented writer, is a curmudgeon. To me, he reads like the lovechild of Dvorak and Ann Coulter, with none of the finesse ;)
xcasex··on Adria Richards' Story Shows How Sexual Harassment Endures in Tech Community
talk about setting up a story with a false premise.
xcasex··on [dead]
This has officially been blown entirely and utterly out of proportion, not a single soul should've been fired over this.
xcasex··on Statement from Playhaven CEO
bollocks.
xcasex··on Google Drive Realtime API
pownce was indeed awesome.

both twitter and in some part google have recently acted very hostile to the notion of the open web. (Although referring to corporations as a singular entity irks me somewhat)

xcasex··on Flat UI DMCA Takedown
omni, here you go: http://twitter.com/almightycasey
xcasex··on Flat UI DMCA Takedown
It would actually be a derivative of ep VI, since the characters and creative designs differ and precede it.

A direct copy, would be the _exact_same_ characters as depicted in ep VI, but alas they are not, they are however similar to, which makes it a derivative of.

xcasex··on Flat UI DMCA Takedown
I actually did. I was told by @Allan -- the founder of LV -- that I was "trolling", "writing inflammatory blog posts", that my "entire base of argument was based on the wrong facts". All in all, a very obtuse strawman argument, so being well spoken, sincere in many ways, will only lead to that sort of reaction from LV.
xcasex··on Flat UI DMCA Takedown
Hello. The way that works, you have to infer the existence of A for the existence of B and the existence of B for the existence of A.

Direct copies only work as an argument if the item is an Original, as in the idea of a thing wholly onto itself without an external influence of any sort.

you might argue that it's derived as in Originated from, borrowed from, a sourced to, an antecedent of, an allusion towards. I could continue. sort of like how Star Wars Episode II and Star Wars Episode I are derived from Star Wars Episode IV. :)

xcasex··on Flat UI DMCA Takedown
But then the question arises, is the person consciously aware of his influences or is he/she just building upon cultural memory? I mean were the DM designers at or about the moment where they released or designed their products had conscious exposure or borrowed either consciously or unconsciously using any of the imagery of LV. There's a lot of unknown unknowns in this whole mess, well to be fair in all affairs of this sort, you'd have to know what the artist and designers were actually thinking when they were going through their creative process, which you nor I cannot do. For all we know, some of these items could be their inspiration. We also don't know the reading habits or exposure to culture that they may or may not have had as young adults, or even as adults where they may have, for example, forgotten specific elements of exposure, and that's sort of one part.

the other part deals strictly with derivatives (creative meaning, not legal) What I mean is that strictly speaking, the new art movement influenced the "flat ui" movement, a folded newspaper is clearly an influence for the nuon project, dribbble iconry, DM flat ui representation and the LV icon. In much the same way a set of gears are derivative of a set of.. gears, which has been represented in too many ways in art that it's lost the entire concept of originality.

and Originality, due to Barthe's work on the Death of authorship, is quite moot at this point.

xcasex··on Flat UI DMCA Takedown
This all relates to trade dress, not copyright per se. there's also the question of originality i.e: Two men are wearing suits. Both suits originate in previous suits. The similarities that they therefore share would be those attributes of the suit that is not encompassed by previous works. So therefore, even though the two suits the two men may be wearing appear virtually identical, they are indeed not and do not share any substantial similarities to one another.

it's trés bothersome when designers behave like this when they're themselves just un/consciously influenced by previous artmovements and designers (florian freundt(2003), matias duarte spring to mind).
