xbryanx··on Show HN: A map that shows you how far you can go for a given time or distance
I love this. I immediately wanted to see how two cities overlap, but found the UI a bit difficult for this. I want to be able to see where's the best place for me and my friend in another city to meet up for lunch or something. I wish you could search a city and then edit the time you enter until you see two blobs overlapping....bingo lunch spot. https://d.pr/i/9DbVel

Unfortunately, to do this, I just had to keep entering new searches with incrementally new times. Anyways, just a feature idea. Nice work.

Yes, this seems like an important aspect of safety and trust in the home. Each partner and family member should know how the devices around them work and can be used.

That text (here and in magazines, newspapers) isn't for you. It's for the casual browser who isn't reading the article yet. It's trying to suck you in and/or give you teensy bite of info even if you don't read the article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pull_quote

Of course this article format is kinda pushing the limits I agree.

xbryanx··on How to build a house alone [video]
Dick Proenneke's Alone in the Wilderness is a wonderful TV show to watch if you're into this sort of DIY building joy. He starts with only a few tools and builds himself a little cabin in Alaska, narrating and filming the whole thing. Quite peaceful and inspiring.

Lots of people don’t realize that North America almost did this same thing about a billion years ago. Check out the failed rift zone called the Midcontinent Rift. Ever curious why Lake Superior is shaped like that? MCR ground zero.

xbryanx··on Amazon's Japanese headquarters raided by nation's regulator
It's not really about whether it's unfair. It's about whether it's against Japan's democratically defined laws.
xbryanx··on Blue Apron to Sell Meal Kits in Stores to Buttress Sagging Deliveries
The second Amazon starts offering these in Whole Foods I'm all over it. And I bet a bunch of other people will to.

We do meal kits (Local Crate) and they're great, but always need a little augmenting (extra veg. mostly). So I'm already at the store a few times a week. The meal kits just simplify the process enormously. Marry the two and you've got a killer product.

I think it'll also be interesting to see how Apollo continues to evolve in this space as more people adopt GraphQL in their React apps. Apollo is getting more and more state management features that can handle lots of what Redux is doing:

xbryanx··on Learning to program is getting harder
I think another big culprit in this situation is the IT department. I visited a research university recently in a computer science related field. The IT department wouldn't allow even graduate students and researchers to have admin access on their machines. Even if the programmers could debug basic issues, they often had to go track down and IT staff member to install some library or program for them. If this is happening at the computer research level it's happening even more in non-tech company business environments. How do we expect staff at non-tech companies to experiment with new skills in programming if they can't even use their computers at their full potential?

xbryanx··on How the LIDAR tech GM just bought probably works
That brings up an interesting thought. Self-driving cars are going to have to come with automated tests that must be passed for the car to even start. You won't be able to make a choice about whether to drive around with a slightly broken car part like that. Some parts of the system will have to not only work, but work near perfectly or require service.

What a phenomenal resource. I'm really surprised at how comprehensive and fast it is.

Anyone know how they support something like this? There's got to be a bit of cost associated with the hosting and processing. Are they selling a commercial version of their software platform?

I'm not a security expert so this is a serious question.

Do you think there's a way to take security seriously enough to successfully defend against state-sponsored hacking? Is it simply inevitable that this sort of hacking leak will happen, or is this leak likely the result of some low-hanging fruit security tips being ignored?
