xbeta··on In-N-Out managers earn triple the industry average
> If other fast food establishments have been reluctant to raise wages, Jayaraman added, it’s because pressure from investors has elevated quarterly gains above the potential long-term benefits of happy workers. In-N-Out has no public shareholders.

Well, that's a reason why I think lots of startups these days opt for a much later public offering. Public investors are just very short-sighted on making a smart financial investment decision. Can't blame them, we are all been told using number (or some measurable metrics) to evaluate any businesses without even understanding what does the business do.

xbeta··on Michelangelo: Uber’s Machine Learning Platform
I don't work in Uber's team on ML, so I can't answer this, but I also cannot just simply assume everything is built-for-PR-splash. You can argue why can't they simply talk about the reason of not reusing any existing OSS framework than building yourself, but making an assumption that they did it for the sake of PR is lack of factual support. Are we now living in a world assuming everything Uber did was for PR? Last I heard they had 1500+ engineers and with that size, I am sure they can just talk about things they have done in the last few years.
xbeta··on Michelangelo: Uber’s Machine Learning Platform
Sure, you sound like anyone can just have a eureka moment and come up with an algorithm. Uber has a legitimate use-case that fits their needs on ML, so they build it for that need. And why not just also talk about it too as a lesson-learned for others.

Do you simply have very high expectation of everything in this world?

I am not sure what to say with your comment on this, but how do you expect any companies going public with a loss on a balance sheet ?
xbeta··on Uber CEO Kalanick likely to take leave
For someone who recently lost a mother and still have a badly injured father. This is totally understandable regardless whether he is a CEO of Uber. For a regular employee, he could request for a sabbatical. But as a CEO, that's difficult given there is no CFO, CMO, COO existed.
xbeta··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
Have you thought about the college tuitions is expensive in US because every institution tries to run it like a business. Some countries in Europe offers free university-level education, some even free to foreigners. They also don't have bad quality.

Maybe the problem is the US ?

xbeta··on On Growing: Lessons from the Story of WeChat
Is Internet that "One-App-for-Everything"? I saw WeChat is rebuilding its own Internet there. And everything is building on top of that ecosystem.
xbeta··on On Growing: Lessons from the Story of WeChat
Agreed. But their audiences are folks never need/own a desktop/laptop in the past. In China and many South-Asian countries, ownership of smartphones are higher than PC.
xbeta··on On Growing: Lessons from the Story of WeChat
It really depends on your use cases. WeChat fits well in China as it is building a product exactly adding value for China culture and lifestyle there.

You can make utilities payment via WeChat, but I would much prefer to have a platform automate this for me and not part of an IM.

The West has been following the UNIX philosophy of doing 1 thing and does it very well.

Perhaps WeChat is not just an app, but an eco-system. As for UX on strictly IM functionality, I would prefer WhatsApp, FB Messenger, Telegram etc as it is much "lean" and lightweight to use.

I personally don't think WeChat can be successfully replicate their model to everywhere in the world.

However, a lesson to learn for everyone (including WeChat), build local product. Builds product that fits everyone's need accommodating their culture and lifestyle.

xbeta··on Amazon Cash
For those do not see a value in this idea - is because simply you are living in a bubble. Lots of places in this world do not take credit cards.

In fact, in the center of the tech bubble - SF and if you happen to visit some restaurants in Chinatown, they usually have a sign says "Cash Only". CC fees are so high (even if you don't think it's that much) that those shops rather not take any CC and save themselves from BS charges.

Please please please think, design, and build a product for a world that's not in the bubble. A simple tech integration can adds huge potential value.

xbeta··on Airbnb raises $1B at $31B valuation, became profitable in 2016
Sorry, I should've been clarify a bit more.

The reason I don't believe in Airbnb simply because they lean toward the hosts, but offering no protection for the renters. In some cases, they have policy only applies to renters, but not at the hosts.

Last I checked, the host cancelled on my reservation is still listing and hosting. I believe they can do better. Even Uber lets both driver and rider rate each other.

xbeta··on Airbnb raises $1B at $31B valuation, became profitable in 2016
My experience tells me Airbnb is in big trouble.

Last year around Nov, I tried to book a Lake Tahoe cabin for 2 families (1 is mine, another is a friend's) for a simple trip for our young children.

I booked via Airbnb few days in advanced. The day before driving to Tahoe, we even called Airbnb to confirm that the listing is OK. The host accepted, but didn't answer to any of our questions.

The next morning when we woke up, we packed everything, then out of bad habit, I opened up the app and checked again. I was caught on surprised that the host cancelled, just 4 hrs before our suppose arrival time. We were very shocked and pissed. I was booking for a friend's family and it was very embarrassed. I immediately contacted Airbnb support, and all they call do for me was to give me $100 back for my NEXT reservation. And they couldn't do anything about my existing. I thought they would put a penalty on Airbnb's host who cancelled on us in less than 24 hrs, but they said they don't have such policy. I was upset because I knew they had such policy for the renter. They also mentioned the best they can do is to find me the next 10 houses to book in the similar location, but cost 3x more as it is bit last minute. They did not anything else to help me.

I was very upset and went to Homeaway.com and found something immediately, even cheaper than the original reservation I had with Airbnb.

My story was a clear first-hand witness on how I believed Airbnb failed at customer service, and will be very difficult to become a successfully company.

xbeta··on Sexism at Uber from Female Management
> If you've got Uber on your CV I would not hire you, no matter how talented you are. No talent is worth the risk of poisoning the team and potentially driving out my other talents.

Or perhaps 90% of the Uber folks just simply force to stay because they are bound by immigration, etc. I don't think "will never hire X from Y because of poisoning Z" will always stand.

I have heard that from many individual said similar comments such as "will not hire from Amazon, will not hire from FB, will not hire from MSFT", but as the company grows, you don't even got that choice. Because recruiters will find them and will get them in. Can you say that to every hire you made in a company with the size of 10000+ ?

Really? As a current H-1Bs, I believe I paid in both income tax + sales tax + property tax (I owned a property here). And I could be kick out at any rate, which means those taxes meant nothing to me, nor to my future generations. Is it really that privileged?
